According to variuos sources the main candidate for a PG spot is lithuanian Arvydas Eitutavičius (26 y/o, 188 cm). Last season he played in Klaipėdos "Neptūnas" where he had ~13pts, ~4reb, ~3ass and 1stl per game. He played very good in the second part of the season after Dainys left to Lietuvos Rytas and he became their main PG.

It's still undecided which team will take 10th spot in BBL's Elite divison. Latvian basketball federation had to decide, but their board couldn't choose team (ASK Riga or Barons Riga). So they will pass the decision to BBL's board which will ultimately decide in upcoming days.

It's official: Liepajas Lauvas will play in BBL Elite divison. They outbided two other candidates from Latvia - ASK Riga and Barons.

Current Liepaja's roster:
C ?/?
PF Klavs Ansons/Edmunds Tukiss
SF Juris Patmalnieks/Kalvis Sprude
SG Martins Kravcenk/Einars Tukiss
PG Vairis Pusaudzis/Renars Zeltins/Sandis Silavs

Currenty they're having negotations with forward Janis Porzingis, who played in Italy (06/07 season in Lega A, 07/08 and beginning of 08/09 in LegaDue) recent seasons. Also they probably will re-sign PF Jevgenijs Kosuskins, who played in Liepaja last season.

This is pretty unfair, that Liepaja got 10th place in BBL elite division, with Zalgiris voice they edged out TTY from Tallinn. Reason probably was that Zalgiris is too lazy to come to Tallinn and play with the stronger club :D as Heino Enden said.

http://sport.delfi.ee/news/korvpall/eesti/leedulaste-soovil-jai-balti-liiga-korgemasse-divisjoni-neli-lati-klubi.d?id=25559481

There should've at least been qualifying games between TTY from Tallinn and Liepaja, as Rytas representative said.

Last year Estonian clubs did much better than Latvian ones in BBL, so 4 places to Latvia and 2 places Estonia is BS. Even 5 Lithuanian, 3 Latvian and 2 Estonian clubs would be fairer than current absurdity.

PF Ronalds Zakis, Arturs Berzins

Yes, Pocius looks great! If you wouldn't know tha he had those hard injuries, you probably wouldn't understand waatching him. He's like a rocket :) Although he probably can't dunk like he used to but still. I expect a lot from him. But when he drives to the basket, he usually allways falls down after his shots, sometimes it seems he will really get injury.. :)
But what worries me is Begic.. he's totally out of shape.. But today he said after the game, that he'll get better.. I hope it's true, Zalgiris needs his good game very much.
Anyway, it's good to start season with a trophy, expecially after last season troubles..

BC Kalev - VEF 90-85

Kalev was trailing by 16 at the halftime but made a great comeback.
What still amazes me, is that Kalev somehow can't convert free-throws into points (32/17 today). They make it so hard for themselves..

Alex Bojic scored 22 points for the winners, Gregor Arbet supported him with 21. Tanel Sokk had a great performance collecting 15 points and dishing out 11 (!) assists.

Ingus Bankevics had 20 and Alex Renfroe 18 points for VEF.

I saw him only once and only for 3 quarters against Žalgiris, so it's way too little and still too early to make any conclusions, but I wasn't too much impressed about him during that time. Good player for such level, maybe Eurocup, but doesn't look as Euroleague potential. But time will show if the first impression was right or wrong

Stuff about alcohol is pretty much BS, I think, but he has some other issues. Two years ago when he playing for Valmiera, he got kicked out of team when he threw middle finger in practice to coach Ainars Bagatskis... Later he played in Zemgale where he produced solid numbers, but seemed that he was bad teammate. And how ofter he switches clubs also isn't a good sign - seems that six months in one team is maximum for him. But we'll see how he plays in Kalev.

VEF coach Valdis Valters said that Renfroe has even more potential then J.R. Holden. Valters coached Holden in his first pro season in Broceni. So far he has had few really good games like that one with triple-double, but as we know it's only his first year after college, so he's inconsistent. I think we should judge him after few months.

Well, i wouldn't say that. Just look at Žalgiris' schedule. They're playing 3 times in a week. So they always are giving rest to key players. Watson and Brown will miss one game in this two days serie, i'm sure. And Kalnietis plays 30 minut every game...

MasterCard Becomes New Title Sponsor of Baltic Basketball League:

Kaunas/Stockholm - December 11th, 2009 – MasterCard Europe today announced that it will become the new title sponsor of the Baltic Basketball League (BBL), the top sporting competition in the region. The agreement covers the 2009/2010, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 seasons and provides MasterCard with exclusive marketing assets related to games, arenas and broadcast coverage in the participating countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Launched in 2004, the Baltic Basketball League has grown into the leading sporting event and most popular spectator sport in the region and the only one covering club teams from all three Baltic States. The league has two divisions - Elite division and Challenge Cup. In the season 2009/2010 BBL Elite Division has 10 teams that will play a total of 102 games per season with the season culminating in the Final Four tournament in April 2010.

Carlos Rodriguez, General Manager Nordic Region and MasterCard Europe said: “We are very proud to team up with the BBL – a competition that has delighted fans in the region with sporting excellence and excitement for many years. This sponsorship will allow us to provide our banking and retails partners as well as MasterCard and Maestro cardholders in the Baltic with exclusive assets and many priceless moments around a fascinating sport.”

IMO it won't, atleast in nearest future, but BBL probably will get weaker, cause Zalgiris might leave it, don't know what plans Rytas or strongest latvians and estonians clubs, which might participate in VTB. For Zalgiris it was clear before the start of the season that schedule is way too heavy, too much games, too little practises to prepare to more important games and instead of that we must play. So it must be VTB or BBL next season and for Zalgiris VTB is more usefull for sure

I agree with you but I think it's time for Baltic League to expand. For example I would have nothing against if we invited few clubs from the countries that are bordered by the Baltic Sea - such as Poland and even Germany. It would add competition to the league and might give Žalgiris and Lietuvos Rytas some extra motivation.

For me BBL > VTB. It would be a huge pity if BBL would slowly fade away.

To be honest, BBL is really useless. And this loose doesn't prove the opposite, having in mind current Zalgiris's conditions. What is more, on Thursday evening they had an Euroleague game in Poland, and it was horrible for Zalgiris, if not to mention details. And on September they had to be in Latvia in order to play against Ventspils. And that's not all, next day they have to play against Lauvas. It's really useless. I'm 90% sure, that next year Zalgiris won't play in BBL, if it is exists. But i think, it should exist for weaker teams.

Agree wit Dreamcatcher here. This season Žalgiris participates in so many leagues: LKL, Euroleague, VTB league, BBL, also LKF Cup final 4. migelitas wrote in eurobasket.lt forum, that this season Žalgiris played 46 official games in 129 days (from 09.25). So, playing in such rhythm, they didn't even had normal time to train and it's not only Krapikas' fault that team played so bad till New Years, it was also because of lack of trainings. Žalgiris played probably the most games in Europe this season. So, from next season they must choose between BBL and VTB (as other leagues are untouchable) and ofcourse they should choose VTB.

I firmly stress that the quality of these leagues would increase with a few Swedish top-teams participating. Not just one Swedish team like the present situation.
Estonian and Latvian club basketball is no greater than Swedish. The odd part is that without the general sponsor (SEB) there would presumably be no team from Sweden involved at all. Now lobbying is a possibility.

There are rumors about Šiauliai signing forward Maris Gulbis, who's currently playing in Zemgale

Also BK Valmiera is testing point guard Tim Crowell.

The play-off games have begun:

Ventspils vs VEF Riga 75:66 (Bertans 19, Strelnieks 14 - Renfroe 16, McCullough 15)

Šiauliai vs Rock 61:84 (Kuzminskas 13, Grafs & Low 12 - Abernethy, Talts, Morrison, Leppik all 14 points)

The system should be ''first to two victories'', if I'm not wrong.

MasterCard BBL Final Four 2010 will be held in Vilnius. The winner of Šiauliai-Rock will face Lietuvos Rytas and the winner of Ventspils-VEF Riga will play Žalgiris.

Damn, was Šiauliai that bad or Rock so good this season? I though Šiauliai will go further while they showed good shape lately (LKL all star game didn't help I guess).

Today we had great game in Riga, where VEF made comeback win against Ventspils 72:71. With less then five minutes remaining in regulation they were down by low double digits and still found way to get back in the game and snatch a win. Great ending as well as great atmosphere in gym.

Decisive Game 3 next Wednesday in Ventspils, should be fun!

Got two news here:
A) BBL is setting for plan B With fears that Rytas and Zalgiris will pull out of the BBL, the league has revealed the 'Plan B' aka no regular season for the two teams The team number might be increasing with Norchoping Dolphins as the fore-runner. All they have to do is 'fulfil the financial requirements', wonder what that could mean... http://www.lithuaniabasketball.com/news-248-bbl-is-setting-up-for-plan-b.html

I would go for Šiauliai and Rytas... :) I know that people in Latvia don't really like Siauliai, but they're adorable to watch. Many people in the arena rooted for Ventspils yesterday, when they were playing versus Zalgiris. Kids (and men, who were a lil drunk) randomly shouted "Ventspils, Ventspils"... :) Anyway, I feel that Zalgiris will have step on D if they want the trophy back. If not, Lietuvos Rytas will work their way to a victory.

Decision by BBL is super poor, I mean total nonsense. Ventspils should get win and discussion over.

In replay we clearly see that tip-in was made after time expired... Why because of that Ventspils needs to play another 40 minutes?

Zalgiris takes the trophy back to Kaunas. Lietuvos Rytas eight (maybe even seven or six) man heroics end after two quarters. A deserved victory for Zalgiris. Here's what happened in Siauliai - Ventspils game:

Ventspils were ahead by a single point before Siauliai’s launched their last possession. Vytautas Sarakauskas tipped in a missed shot by his teammate with the sound of buzzer and sent the Lithuanian crowd crazy. The referees signed the game protocol immediately and were unable to reverse the decision to count the basket once they had seen replays of the last play.

You know that's not possible. If BBL first decided that there should be rematch and now changed their mind and gave a win to Ventspils - that would be crazy.

Actually, when I saw it live in Siemens Arena, I was pretty sure that Ventpils should have won. However, when I see the replay you gave, it is clear that there were some time left (~0,4) when Sarakauskas touched the ball. Those lights on the backboard turned on too soon. Again.
Therefore, a rematch is a fair decision.

I still don't think that shot was good, it shouldn't count. Anyway, if there was a rematch, why BBL decided to play it next day in Sunday?
Aren't they playing for fans, so they should put game in time where they could reach max fan base?

The MasterCard BBL third place belongs to Siauliai. Siauliai and Ventspils today had to replay the game for the third place, because the last shot by Siauliai center Vytautas Sarakauskas (Siauliai - Ventspils, 2010-04-24) was questionable. But Ventspils yesterday left Vilnius and did not come to the Lietuvos rytas arena for the today's game at 13:00.

So, Ventspils received technical defeat 0:20 while Siauliai was awarded third place prize - cup and 10 thousand euros prize.

i am not going to argue that it was good shot - but,
straight after the game, referees sign (Referees: Andres Tobi, Tomas Jasevicius, Oskars Lucis - one latvian, one estonian ,one Lithuanian -so no conspiracy there) the protocol ,winner is declared.

Latvians watch video replay on the screen ,protest.
But because the rules says, that there is no video evidence is allowed, that should had been that.
On what basis there was rematch declared i do not know.
If they mention fair play principle - just declare join third place and split the prize money.
Btw - i really enjoyed the game

saw that later on. I was missing the promotion terminology throughout that event. somewhat discriminative policy by the league tbf.

nevertheless, Dolphins still have chance to play in the league by the following course of action:

1) Receiving a wildcard if the league expands by two clubs next season
or
2) bribing itself into the league.

Both options fairly possible.

There will be 12 teams in Elite Division (regular season) next year as Rudupis, Dolphins, TTÜ and Perlas will play in the Elite Division.

Dolphins will add some spice to this league and I'm sure they are capable of performing well.

I'm sad that Barons didn't get the chance to join though. They would of been good addition for the league as well, considering the fact that they have been one of the best (if not the best) Latvian clubs this season and they're also financially stable.
