  • Best ever international teams...

(originally posted by Federoy, 03-30-2004, 10:45 PM)

My best ever international teams are (excluding the US):

    1. 1988 Soviet National Team: A very talented, fundamentally sound team led by Lithuanians Sarunas Marciulionis and Arvydas Sabonis along with Russian Alexander Volkov. This Soviet team compiled a perfect 8-0 record en route to their second ever gold medal, defeating the heavily favorite US team in the final. There are many basketball analyst who suggest that the advent of the US "dream team" was in some part influenced by the Soviet's capture of the 88 gold medal.

    2. 1990 Yugoslavian National Team: Probably the most offensively explosive Yugoslav team ever created. This team featured the likes of Vlade Divac, Toni Kukoc, Drazen Petrovic, and Dino Radja. Like the Soviets in 88, this team earned a perfect 8-0 mark in the 1990 World Championships, beating its closest rivals, the US and the Soviet Union (crushed the USSR by 17 points in the gold medal match, 92-75)

    3. 1980 Yugoslavian National Team: This unheralded and often forgotten national team swept through the Moscow Games with a perfect 8-0 record, beating Italy in the final to capture Yugoslavia's first and only Olympic gold medal. This succesor team was primarily comprised of players from the 1978 Yugoslavian team that won gold at world championships in Manilla.

    4. 1992 Croatian National Team: Despite losing to the original US Dream Team by 32 in the prelims and 31 in the gold medal match, this Croatian National team is still among the best international teams ever. Ex-Yugoslavian nationals Petrovic, Kukoc, Radja, and Stojan Vrankovic assembled to make up the core of this great team. Arguably, if a team of US collegiates would have made it to the final, they would have had difficulties handling the size and shooting strength of this team. A year later, this team of Croatians would go on to win the 1993 European Championships.

    5. 1996 Yugoslavian National Team: Definitely one of the great Yugoslavian teams of all time. Like its predecessors in 1980 and 1990, this team was well balanced offensively and defensively, resulting in solid contributions from its main players Predrag Danilovic, Vlade Divac, Aleksander Djordjevic, and Zarko Paspalj. Although they lost to the US in the gold medal final, unlike most teams the Americans encountered, the Yugoslavs never folded under pressure and kept the game close until the middle of the second half.

    6. 2000 Lithuanian National Team: This team is famous for what many thought was impossible: beat a NBA-stocked US team. And they nearly did it twice, losing by just 7 and 2 points respectively! This may not have been the most talented team, but they played hard, together, and with a sense of purpose. Although this team will be remembered for its near upset of the mighty US, its ultimate achievement was winning the bronze medal and losing just two games (both to the US).

    7. 1987 Brazillian National Team: Major accomplishment: Defeated the US to claim gold in the Pan-American Games.

    8. 1994 Russian National Team: Major accomplishment: Won silver at the 1994 WC

    9. 1972 Soviet National Team: Major accomplishment: Won controversial gold medal at the 1972 Munich games

    10. 1980 Italian National Team: Major accomplishment: Won silver at the 1980 Moscow Games

Lot of mistakes in that paragraph. Soviet Union had 7-1 record at Olympics (lost to Yugoslavia at round phase). US team was heavily favourite just for the US people. Favourite team was Yugoslavia. Finally Soviet Union played against Yugoslavia at final, not USA (that was semifinal)
I dont know if these numbers are rankings or not but that post is obviously of someone that watches NBA mostly and in few occasions rest competitions. Dont take it personally. You live in USA probably so you can watch just that. I live in europe and cant have so clear opinion about NBA or NCAA or panamericans as you.
Before 1980 I hadnt watched lot of competitions so I cant have personal view although the teams that everyone remembers are Soviet Union at Olympics of 1972 led by Belov to gold and at late 80s Yugoslavian team.
After 1980 the teams that most remember in chronological order are:
        1) Italian team of 1983. The team based on players that won silver medal at Olympics of 1980 won eurobasket of 1983 having as star Dino Menegin.
        2) Soviet Union of 1985-1989. Won Eurobasket of 1985 and Olympic games of 1988, Silver medals at Eurobasket of 1987,1989 and World Championship of 1986. Some of the stars of those teams (all didnt take part in all competitions) Sabonis, Marculionis (Lithuania), Volcov,Tichonenko (Russia), Valters (Estonia) and many others.
        3) Brazilian team of 1987 led by Oscar to gold medal at panamerican games.
        4) Greek team of 1987-1989 won gold medal at eurobasket of 1987 and silver medal at eurobasket of 1989. Stars of team Galis, Yiannakis, Fassoulas, Christodoulou.
        5) Yugoslavian team of 1988-1991. Won eurbasket of 1989,1991, World Championship 1990, Silver medal at Olympics of 1988. Stars of team Petrovic, Kukoc, Radza, Divac and lot of others
        6) Croatian team of 1992-1995. Silver at Olympic games, bronze medal at eurobasket of 1993,1995, World Championship of 1994 . Stars of team Petrovic, Kukoc, Radza, Divac.
        7) Lithuanian team of 1992-1995. Silver at eurobasket of 1995 bronze at olympics of 1992. Stars of team Sabonis,Marculionis, Karnisovals and lot of other great lithuanian players but at the end of their carear.
        8) Yugoslavian team of 1995-2002. First at Eurobasket of 1995,1997,2001 World Championships of 1998,2002 silver medal at Olympics of 1996 bronze at eurobasket of 1999. Among of players that played all that time are Divac,Stojacovic,Bodiroga.

I could also mention teams of Puero Rico of late 80s, German team of 1992-1993 (won eurobasket of 1993), Italian team of 1999 (won eurobasket) and Lithuanian team of 2000 (was the first team that had shot to win USA team based on NBA players), Argentinian team of 2002 (silver at wold championships of 2002, first team that ever won USA/NBA team) and Lithuanian team of 2003 (won eurobasket). Although those teams had just one success and then disappeared (the first teams) or is early to be in a least like that since they still exist.
Best of all was surely Yugoslavian team of 1988-1991. To campare the rest is a bit hard. They played at different periods and under different circumstances.

Well if we start it like this:
(excluding US and Europe), what do you get?
              -1987 Brazillian National Team
              -Puerto Rico of late 80s
              -Argentinian team of 2002

Any other teams you could think of anyone?
              Asia? Africa?

Just to correct few mistakes. Alexander Volkov isnt a Russian, but Ukrainian.

And Lithuania in 2000 Sydney lost 3 games and not only two. We lost the first game to Italy 49:50. Thats why we, who played in the same group with USA, had to meet them not in the final, but in semifinal. France was lucky no to meet us in semifinal.

Also about 1992 Croatian team. They also were lucky not to meet us in semifinal, cause we managed to lose to Russia by 12 in group stage after leading by 22 after 1st half (one of the craziest loss I remember). Thats why we finished second in the group and had to meet USA in semi's. Otherwise Croatia would have won just bronze.

I remember both teams back than, and from what I've seen Kukoc and Drazen were unstopable even for Dream team, only way Croatia wouldn't get to the finals would be because meeting Dream Team before the finals.

Ramon Rivas was a big center who played mostly in spain , wasn't he? If i'm right , he played in vitoria . he was a brute. ( he was playing with ken "the animal" bannister , so it was a complete team of brutes.

it's hard to say imho. LT and Croatian players (as well as coaches, of course) knew each other extremely well from club competitions, past champs and so on, while US did not care to much about any of them . therefore I'd agree that Croatia - Lithuania at those champs would be far less predictable than US - Croatia.

Perhaps you could change the 1987 Brazilian team for the 1984 spanish team who win the silver medal in the LA olimpics, loosing to a USA team with a guy... ehhh Oh yea a guy called Michael Jordan... I don't know if you have heard something about him later

                            That team was really great.
