  • Brad Newley: Australia's NBA Prospect

A quality player. I could imagine him being a late 2nd round like Manu back in 1999. According to Draft Express and I would also agree he's style of play is very similar to Manu. Hopefully, he could turn out to be as successful as Manu.
May make the Australian A-grade Team for the World Championships in Japan however, he will have stiff competition in terms of playing time against veterans such as former import for Cibona Zagreb's Jason Smith or former NBA Draft Pick CJ Bruton (who'll be heading off to the US for individual workouts with NBA teams Portland Trailblazers, Cleveland Cavaliers etc.) and former NCAA Div II Player of the Year (2005) Mark Worthington. This was evident during the Semi Final game of the Commonwealth Games vs England and in the Gold Medal game against the Tall Blacks (New Zealand) as he was in the starting lineup however, he had to fight and earn his time on the court.

    Newley in the mix

    NBL, ESPN.com

Townsville Crocodiles star Brad Newley has been rated among the top 15 prospects at shooting guard for the upcoming 2006 NBA Draft by respected sports website ESPN.com.

Newley, who has indicated that he intends to nominate for the June Draft, was rated as the 14th best shooting guard in the 2006 Draft.

He was also rated as the 64th overall prospect by renowned sports writer Chad Ford on the ESPN website.

Ford rated Newley as a chance to be picked up in the second round of the Draft and tabbed him as the third-best international player at the shooting guard position behind only Rudy Fernandez from Spain and Israel’s Yotam Halperin.

Newley’s agent has reportedly arranged several private individual workouts with different NBA teams to allow the Crocs guard to showcase his skills and move up in the Draft.

Each year, 60 of the world’s best young players are selected in the NBA Draft with each team receiving two picks. Only the first round picks receive a guaranteed contract from the team that selects them.
Here's some extra information about Brad Newley:

    Height: 199cm
    Weight: 88kg

Was named the 2005 NBL Rookie of the Year and the Best Sixth Man … selected for the 2005 NBL All-Star Game and won the match MVP award after scoring 35 points (on 14-of-26 shooting), and adding four rebounds and seven assists … won the Bob Staunton Medal as the MVP of the 2004 Under 20 Junior National Championship … played for Forestville in the Central ABL (ABA) … was a member of the Australian Emus (U/20) team which won a gold medal at the World Championships for Junior Men in Greece in 2003 … held a scholarship at the AIS in 2003 and 2004 … selected for the Crocs Australian Young Men’s (U/22) national team tour of Europe in 2004 … 2005 Boomers squad member.

BRAD NEWLEY DECLARES for NBA DRAFT

    Newley declares for NBA Draft
Townsville-based Aussie, Brad Newley, has declared himself for the 2006 NBA Draft.

Newley is among a record 30 international players included in a list of 93 early entry candidates released on Thursday.

Newley left for the US last week and will take part in Draft Camps in the lead up to next month’s Draft. He will be looking to impress coaches who will have already heard great things about the lanky 21-year-old who is mates with Andrew Bogut.

Newley won a gold medal at the 2003 U19 World Championships with Bogut and hopes to emulate him by being picked up early in the Draft – perhaps not with the number 1 pick though.

Newley burst onto the senior international team last year and made an impression with the crowd and the media during the Commonwealth Games in March.

Newley was this week named in the 35-man Boomers squad for the World Championships to be played in Japan this August.
    THAT'S GOLD

NBL star Newley impresses in US
          Wednesday, May 31, 2006 - 11:01 AM
          NBL, ESPN

Respected ESPN writer Chad Ford has compared Townsville Crocodiles NBL star Brad Newley with San Antonio Spurs Argentinean sensation Manu Ginobili and Boston Celtics legend Danny Ainge after watching the Australian play in the US.

Ford, who writes for the internationally renowned ESPN website, saw Newley train at the famous A.T.T.A.C.K. Athletics gymnasium in Chicago as the Philips Championship star prepares for the NBA Draft on June 28.

“I watched him in workouts on Thursday and Friday and saw him play in the five-on-five game on Saturday, matched up against Denham Brown, one of the better defenders in college basketball last season,” Ford wrote in his pre-Draft column.

“When I first saw him in workouts, I assumed he was a jump shooter like many European two guards. But in the scrimmage, Newley showed he is very aggressive putting the ball on the floor and taking it to the basket.”

“His game resembles Manu Ginobili's more than it does that of most Euros. He doesn't have the quickness or creativity of Ginobili, but he's a good athlete, and he actually likes contact. He held up well against a very physical Brown. Those who remember how Danny Ainge used to play would recognize some of the same feistiness in Newley.”

Newley evidently earned the respect of the players on the court as well with Ford writing that one of his opponents told him after he scrimmaged with the Aussie that the Croc was “one tough S.O.B.”

Ford also noted that Newley’s long-range shooting was better than initial reports indicated and that the Australian’s passing was impressive.

“International scouts say Newley isn't known for his jump shooting over there, but his shot was falling in the game. He hit several NBA-distance threes and a couple of midrange shots.”

“Newley also is a good passer and with a feel for setting up his teammates.”

“Defensively he was pretty good. He moved his feet very well and showed he is stronger than he looks.”

Ford also reported that Newley was set to play in the Orlando pre-draft camp which will be held at the Disney World Resort in Florida from June 6 – 10.

“Given his great feel for the game and his aggression on the offensive end, he could be an Orlando pre-draft camp sleeper, just as Beno Udrih was a couple of years ago. Only three NBA teams -- the Clippers, Pistons and Rockets -- have gone to see him play in Australia, so he's a bit of unknown.”

From Townville Buletin: Newley on Fire

Newley on fire in NBA Draft lead-up By ANTONY STEWART
THE likelihood of Townsville Crocodiles star Brad Newley being at the club for the 2006/07 National Basketball League season seems to be shrinking every day.

Domiciled in the US since early May preparing for the NBA Draft on June 28, the 21-year-old shooting guard has been wowing onlookers and opponents alike with his athletic play at training and team workouts.
Initially expected to be a possible second-round pick, Newley's stocks have soared since he based himself in Chicago.

Brad Newley, pictured on the rampage for Townsville, has made keen observers in the US sit up and take notice of his ability in recent weeks

In a recent Sports Illustrated mock draft, the 2004/05 NBL rookie of the year was rated as a No. 27 first-round pick, while respected ESPN writer Chad Ford compared him with San Antonio Argentinean superstar Manu Ginobili after watching him play in the US.

Expecting Newley to be a standard jump shooter, Ford said the Australian offered much more than was first reported in America.

"I watched him in workouts on Thursday and Friday and saw him play in the five-on-five game on Saturday, matched up against Denham Brown, one of the better defenders in college basketball last season," Ford wrote in his pre-draft column.

"When I first saw him in workouts I assumed he was a jump shooter like many European (shooting) guards.

"But in the scrimmage, Newley showed he is very aggressive putting the ball on the floor and taking it to the basket.

"His game resembles Manu Ginobili's more than it does that of most Euros.
"He doesn't have the quickness or creativity of Ginobili but he's a good athlete and he actually likes contact. He held up well against a very physical Brown."

New Crocodiles coach Trevor Gleeson, who has kept in contact with Newley during his time in the US, said there was a good chance the Townsville NBL franchise would have to prepare for life without the South Australian.

"It's a possibility and he is doing well over there. It's a great opportunity for him to get over there and play against the quicker, the stronger and the tougher players that are going into the draft, so that is a possibility and we have to have measures in place in case that happens," he said.
"I just got off the phone with Brad this morning, he finished a workout with the Utah Jazz, did really well, and the day before he was in Phoenix, working out with those guys and he has the Orlando pre-draft camp June 5 to 9."

Ford said Newley's game could come as pleasant surprise to NBA clubs at the Orlando pre-draft camp being held at the Disney World Resort in Florida from June 6 to 10.

"Given his great feel for the game and his aggression on the offensive end, he could be an Orlando pre-draft camp sleeper, just as Beno Udrih was a couple of years ago," he said.

              From CNN/SI: Postcards from Camp...

              8. Andrew Bogut and Luke Schenscher may not be the only Australians in the NBA for long.

I've been referring to 6-6 Aussie guard Brad Newley as "The Bed-Head Guy" this week; he shows up at the camp each morning with his hair on the back of his head sticking straight up, and the front part pressed down. "The bed-head is pretty common in Australia," Newley explained to me. "I actually had a mohawk before this, but people in the NBL [Australia's top league] were calling me Billy Idol, so the bedhead is my new one. Some guys there grow the mullet, even, but that's not me yet."
Coif aside, the 21-year-old Newley is a solid prospect. He averaged 19.3 points for Townsville in the NBL this season and has flashed an impressive shooting stroke and passing ability in the camp thus far. He went to high school with Andrew Bogut at the Australian Institute of Sport (later playing with Bogut in the 2003 World Championships) and said he turned down scholarship offers from Arizona, Gonzaga and Utah. The intrigue of being a foreign-born scorer seems to only have helped his draft buzz, as a number of scouts believe he's second-round material.

Brad Newley PULLS OUT OF DRAFT

                    Newley remains a Croc
                    Monday, June 19, 2006 - 02:22 PM
                    NBL, Townsville Crocodiles

The McDonald’s Crocodiles have announced that NBA hopeful Brad Newley will again suit up for the team in 2006/07 after his agent Leon Rose advised the club that Newley had officially withdrawn from the 2006 NBA Draft.

Newley spent the past six weeks in the States training and working out with several NBA teams including the Phoenix Suns and the Utah Jazz before he attended the Orlando Pre-draft Camp last weekend.

According to Rose, there was a lot of interest in Newley from NBA teams, but no guarantees that he would be drafted for 2007.

Rose said that the time spent in the States was good preparation for Newley’s 2007 NBA campaign and had afforded him the opportunity to personally train with NBA teams and experience first hand the style of play and level of competition in the world’s premier basketball competition.

While disappointed about withdrawing from the draft, Newley was excited about returning to the Crocs for next season and working on his game in anticipation of fulfilling his NBA ambitions the following year.

McDonald’s Crocodiles CEO Ian Smythe said that Newley’s return was good news for the franchise and fans.

“This is great news for the Townsville franchise and sports fans in the twin cities. Brad is the hottest property in the NBL and to have him rejoin the team only serves to strengthen the existing roster,” said Smythe.

“This news now allows us to fill the final import position on the roster, with nine confirmed players.”

Newley will return to Australia on Tuesday, he will spend time with his family in Adelaide before preparing for the World Championships in September.
Hopefully, AUS NBL/ Euro veteran Chris Anstey or former NBA Draft Pick CJ Bruton or my main man Luke Schenscher (aka Big Bird) goes to the NBA with Bogut.
