I predict that Ben Hur will win the championship. Of course it's too early to tell, but Diego Garcia is a player of the highest caliber. Combined with their other players, Ben Hur should win.

Yeah, they are the biggest candidates along with Boca IMO, which won the Argentinian Cup and the S. A. Clubs Championship in this offseason, but the good thing is that there is around 8 teams with almost the same chances of winning this league, we are going to have one of the most even seasons in history!

Posts: 851 Interview with Paolo Quinteros

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FIBA.com interviwed Boca Jrs star Paolo Quinteros, who led Boca Jrs to the first place of the Argentinean League and earlier this year to the South American Clubs Championship and to the Argentinean Cup title. Paolo Quinteros who got Silver medal in the Tournament of Americas in Dominican Republic with the Argentinian National Team.
Quinteros is averaging 22.1 ppg 3.8 rpg 2.4 apg 2.3 spg and 3 topg in 35 mpg this season for Boca Jrs.

ARG - Quinteros waits in the wings

BUENOS AIRES (FIBA World Championship 2006) - Paolo Quinteros believes he has a legitimate chance to make Argentina's squad for next summer's FIBA World Championship in Japan.

The 26-year-old is a shooting guard, like current national team players Emanuel Ginobili and Carlos Delfino, and his performances of late have been raising eyebrows.

No matter how good you are, it's always going to extremely tough to break into a national side like Argentina.

"It is difficult because there are a lot of good players," Quinteros said to PA Sport.

"The only advantage I have is that I do not have to prove anything to Sergio (Hernandez).

"He knows me. I did well in the FIBA Americas Championship in the Dominican Republic and I did much better than I expected."

Quinteros averaged more than 13 points per game as Argentina claimed a silver medal this summer in the Dominican Republic.

In their 84-67 second phase victory over the United States, Quinteros exploded for 21 points.

The thought of making it to Japan truly excites him.

"Everyone knows that Ginobili and Delfino will play in Japan next year... but for me, just being able to train alongside these 'monsters' is an honour."

When Quinteros says Hernandez knows him, he means it.

Hernandez also coached the player at Boca Juniors.

Hernandez left his post at Boca in July to concentrate solely on the national team.

Quinteros is backing Hernandez to keep the momentum going that started under Ruben Magnano.

"He knows what the best part of each player is," Quinteros said.

"It is going to be hard not to have him in Boca and I will miss him a lot.

"But I think the Argentinian team will succeed in the Championship with him in charge.

"It is well known that Argentinian players always want to win and we never quit."

Argentina's national side is not old, but it is not young, either.

What the FIBA Americas Championship proved is that once Argentina's current crop of superstars do retire from the national side, plenty of talent is waiting in the wings.

That was evident as Argentina's second team nearly won gold in the Dominican Republic.

They ultimately lost to Brazil's first team in the gold medal game 100-88.

Even though they won silver, there was disappointment in the Argentina camp, because the country is so accustomed to finishing first.

The last few years have been especially successful.

At the FIBA World Championship 2002 in Indianapolis, they made it to the final before losing in overtime to Yugoslavia.

Magnano's men put that disappointment behind them and marched to the gold medal at the Olympics, beating Team USA in a semi-final before laying waste to Italy to win gold.

The senior team also won the South American Championship in 2003 and 2004.

Argentina's youngsters have been successful of late, too, winning the U16 and U18 South American Championship earlier this year.

Quinteros began his career at Armenio, in the province of Entre Rios and some years later went to Boca Juniors' training camp.

He trained there and was picked as one of only five of the 70 there to sign professional terms.

Boca have been succesful with Quinteros but they fallen behind arch-rivals River Plate in the Southern Division this season.

"After winning the South American Championship for Clubs and the Argentina Cup, it was obvious the team needed to rest," Quinteros said.

"However, I am happy here and as a club, we are as good as any European team."

Quinteros envisions himself having a big career, like his compatriot Emanuel Ginobili has enjoyed in Europe, and the NBA.

"I want to succeed in the national team and I am never scared of anything," he said.

"I have looked at each player in the NBA who comes from Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Brazil, and I see players like Alex Garcia, who is as short as I am ... and then I wonder 'why not me?'"

                2nd Stage 2nd Round

                From Fiba.com:

CORRIENTES (Liga Nacional) - Boca climbed to the top of the Liga Nacional by securing an impressive 85-77 away win at Regatas in the second round of the second stage.

The hosts had the better of the first half, and were leading 42-33 at the midway point.

However the game's balance began to shift in the third quarter, which Boca won 21-17.

The visitors took the momentum into the final quarter, and ran out relatively comfortable winners.

The game's top-scorer was Clarence Robinson of Regatas with 24 points, but Willard Ford (23) and Paolo Quinteros (20) of Boca were also key players in the victory.

Elsewhere, Libertad inflicted the latest blow on defending champions Ben Hur by winning the Santa Fe derby 92-88, in the biggest match of the round.

The 2004-05 winners controlled the game, but with an impressive performance from Sebastian Ginobili.their performance dropped off as the game went on, and Libertad took advantage to win the game.

The champions are in crisis. After breaking a record by remaining unbeaten for 13 rounds, the team coached by Julio Lamas have now lost three games in a row, all of them played without the injured Leonardo Gutierrez.

Ginobili netted 21 points and provided 10 assists, while Mariano Ceruti poured in 25 points.

Ben Hur had the consolation of having the game's top scorer in Diego Garcia, who had 33 points.

Giants Atenas, meanwhile, claimed their third triumph in a row by hammering Central Entrerriano 94-78, thanks mainly to the 24 points of Diego Prego and the 10 rebounds grabbed by Diego Osella.

Ciclista Juninense continue to make history in their first season in the Liga Nacional as they picked up another big-name scalp with a 91-7- victory over Deportivo Madryn, with 23 points from Cristopher Jackson.

River Plate had no problem in seeing off Gimnasia y Esgrima 92-70, to climb up to fifth place in the standings.

"We've made a great effort, playing a very good second half," said River's guard Bruno Labaque, who scored 21 points.

"It's true that we used to be better-placed in the table, but we relaxed and that was a mistake. We're getting to know each other because we're a new team and each player has to get used to the other team-mates soon."

Elsewhere, Estudiantes beat Belgrano 94-89 in overtime, after finishing the regular period tied on 83 points apiece. Gerardo Barrera, with 25 points, was the key man for Estudiantes.

                      Re: LNB 2005/06 (Update)

Well, I was very busy the last couple of months so I couldn't update the LNB, but now we are very close to the playoffs, so it is time.

Ben hur de Rafaela lost Leo Palladino, who signed for a Italian team, but they still leads the Argentinian league with Leo Gutierrez and Diego Garcia as stars, Atenas has been the best team in the second stage reaching the second place, in fact Atenas is number one now, but with two more games than Ben Hur. While Libertad and Boca has been irregular in the second stage. La Union de Formosa failed to avoid the relegation and will play in the TNA next season, Argentino de Junin which started the season with the biggest budget and great chances has been a dissapointment and is close to be relegated to TNA too.

                        Quote:
                        ARG - Argentino go down

RAFAELA (Liga Nacional) - Argentino were relegated and leaders Ben Hur suffered a surprise home defeat to Quilmes in an action-packed weekend in the second stage of Argentina's Liga Nacional.

Argentino slipped to a 91-90 derby loss to ninth-placed Ciclista Juninense even though they were winning 88-83 with only 20 seconds remaining.

Four points by Agustin Carabajal and a two-pointer by Derrick Bryant made the Coliseum go wild as Ciclista consigned their arch rivals to life in the second division's TNA tournament next season.

Argentino are now too far adrift to catch 14th-placed Belgrano and they join basement side La Union in the relegation scrapheap.

The defeat made Belgrano's 97-96 reverse to River Plate inconsequential, with Julio Mazzaro and Alejandro Burgos shining for the winning side with 40 points between them.

At the other end of the table, Ben Hur remain top but slipped to their ninth loss of the stage when they were beaten 76-75 by Quilmes.

Man-of-the-match Byron Wilson netted 30 points for the winners while Leonardo Gutierrez scored 30 points for the leaders.

Second-placed Atenas closed the gap on Ben Hur thanks to a 95-83 away win against Estudiantes in Olavarria City.

Timothy Jones was unstoppable as he claimed 29 points while Jameel Heywood added an 18-point contribution.

                        Quote:
ARG - Bulchi hits stardom with last-second tip

JUNIN (Liga Nacional) - Four-tenths of a second was all it took for Ciclista center Mauro Bulchi to become a celebrity in Argentina.

Sunday's LNM game between Junin clubs Argentino and Ciclista was not for the faint hearted, with the outcome of the contest deciding which team would follow Union de Formosa into the second division (TNA).

Argentino not only had to beat Ciclista on the road in order to avoid the drop but also needed River Plate to beat Belgrano in Nunez, who risked relegation if Argentino won.

With three seconds left to play in Nunez, Belgrano were winning 96-95 with a free throw yet to come. Belgrano's Cristian Romero missed the shot and River's Maurice Spillers managed to make a shot at the other end for a 97-96 triumph.

Luck seemed to be on their side, but Bulchi was having none of it. With three seconds remaining and Argentino 90-88 up after Ciclista's Eduardo Domine missed a three-pointer, it seemed to be over.

Thankfully for Ciclista, Juan Cangelosi got the offensive rebound and was fouled. Cangelosi, who once played for Argentino, made the first one from the stripe but missed the second. However, the 2.01m tall Bulchi came to the rescue. With less than half a second remaining, he leapt higher than everyone and tapped the ball home to hand his side a 91-90 triumph.

"Our fans didn't think it was possible," said Bulchi. "But we never gave up. It's a game that will go down in history, a game worthy of the NBA."

The Belgrano fans back in Nunez, who had been following the action on the radio, exploded with joy and began to chant: "Bulchi to the national team."

"They want to build a monument in my name," he said.

Back in Junin, the Ciclista fans celebrated the late victory that consigned their bitter rivals to the second division.

"Many people kissed my left hand and took photos of me," said the 22-year-old Bulchi. "They made me repeat that play on the court over and over again and they want me to return every March 20th to Junin to do it."

However, Bulchi is trying to avoid at all costs meeting Argentino fans on the streets of Junin.

He said: "I guess they'll wanna kill me!"

Mario Bulchi is a 22 years old 6'7" 150 kg center, with obvious weight problems, this problems made him an easy target for jokes about his weight in almost every arena he plays, but specially when he plays against town rivals Argentino, well, I think it was his payback time, this was Bulchis's sweet revenge.

Je je, I'm pretty sure that Bunn will be going to Puerto Rico, very soon, the regular season ends this week here and Bunn's team will play the playoffs, but I think they will not get very far, so Joe is going to be free in less than a month.
