QUOTED:

"Yao, 29, marked his marriage to longtime girlfriend Ye, 28, with a lavish August 2007 ceremony.

The couple hasn't decided yet where the baby will be born, but whether boy or girl, "lil' Yao" is sure to be one thing: creepy tall. Yao stands at 7-foot-6-inches, while Ye towers over most women at 6-foot-2."

Yao Ming and wife expecting a baby girl

Posted Feb 6 2010 1:03AM

BEIJING (AP) -- Houston Rockets star Yao Ming says he and his wife are having a baby girl, and excited Chinese fans have already posted photo mashups of the couple's faces online to predict what she'll look like.

A column in the China Daily newspaper first mentioned the news in passing Thursday, but it made the front page Saturday as fans sent Yao's comments whizzing through online forums.

"Yao told me about his excitement of becoming a father; especially when he first heard his daughter's heartbeat on the monitor," columnist Yang Lan wrote Thursday.

The first child for Yao and his wife, Ye Li, is due in July.

Scientists have predicted the girl will grow up to be about 1.86 meters (6-foot-2), China Daily reported Saturday.

The 2.25-meter (7-foot-6) Yao has been sidelined since surgery in May to repair a hairline fracture in his left foot.

Fan furore that Yao's baby could be American

BEIJING (AFP) – China's star NBA centre Yao Ming can do no wrong on the court in the eyes of basketball fans, but some diehards are crying foul over the possibility that his firstborn could have an American passport.

Yao and his wife have headed back to the United States, where he plays for the Houston Rockets, ahead of the birth of their first child, which is reportedly due sometime between May and July.

If the child is born in the United States, he or she will automatically be considered an American citizen -- a prospect that some nervous fans say could potentially deprive China of a new basketball superstar.

"This will not only be a huge loss to Chinese basketball but, as far as feelings are concerned, will be something very difficult for Chinese fans to accept," the Chongqing Business Daily said, citing angry online comments.

But on popular web portal sina.com, some users expressed support over the possibility of an American Yao.

"To not become an American is stupid... China is a paradise for officials, but hell for ordinary people," said a poster named Limin.

Another user from Shanghai named Kekeweiqi said: "We have no right to interfere in the future of baby Yao. When baby Yao grows up, he/she will have the right to choose his/her own nationality and occupation."

Yao and his wife have been in China for several months as the centre recovers from a broken foot that has forced him out for the entire NBA season and helps to manage the Shanghai Sharks, his former team which he now owns.

Yao's agent, Zhang Mingji, said the place of birth of the child was a "family matter" and was not an issue up for debate, the Chongqing paper said.

If Baby Yao doesn't play basketball, who cares!

Baby Yao is only relevant because people think she'll be super-tall and dominant in basketball (although I wonder if she'll dominate Lailaa Williams, LOL.)

This whole deal about nationality reminds me of two girls:
  • Wang Ching-Ting (born in 1993, was 200cm last year), daughter of Wang Libin (202cm) and Xu Yan (187cm)
  • Song Fan-Yi (born in 2004, was 111cm at age of 2!), daughter of Song Tao (208cm) and Peng Ping (188cm)

Wang Libin and Song Tao were two of China's best basketball players in the 1980s. Song was even drafted by the NBA, and Wang had also been approached by American scouts (at a time when "Be suspicious of American enemies" prevailed thinking). Like Yao, both were also flag-bearers for China in Olympics (Wang in 1984, Song in 1988). Like Yao, both married a basketball player. And like Yao, both left Mainland China to play basketball. In the early 1990's, there was no CBA in Mainland China but there was a CBA in Taiwan. Both played there and took their families there. Now (particularly with Daughter Wang) there is a big question mark --- Would they play for Team China or for Taiwan, where they were born and grew up (not sure if Daughter Song applies)? The debate over Wang was especially strong 2 years ago when she was still in middle school in Taiwan because her dad returned to Mainland China to coach in the CBA --- and inevitably became political on message boards. Wang Libin is still coaching for a university team in Mainland China and I believe Daughter Wang is studying somewhere (Arlington, TX?) in the States, but I don't know what will happen next (Will she even play hoops?)

I guess they (including Baby Yao if she was born in the US) should be thankful they are girls...
