Charlotte signs Walter Herrmann
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Bobcats signed forward Walter Herrmann of Argentina to a one-year contract on Monday.
Herrmann's agent George Bass said the deal includes a team option for a second season. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The 6-foot-9 Herrmann averaged 9.8 points and shot 47 percent from 3-point range while playing for his native country in last month's world championships. He scored 25 points and 23 points in back-to-back wins over Venezuela and Lebanon. Argentina lost in the bronze medal game to the United States.
Herrmann, who was also a member of Argentina's gold medal-winning 2004 Olympic team, had been playing in the Spanish ACB League. He has played in 379 games in Spain and Argentina with career averages of 13.4 points and 4.7 rebounds, while shooting 53 percent from the field and just under 40 percent from 3-point range.
"He has a good track record with his performance in arguably the best league outside of the NBA," Bobcats coach and general manager Bernie Bickerstaff said. "The success his countrymen like Manu Ginobili and Andres Nocioni have had in the NBA translates well for Walter as he brings the toughness and intensity that they exemplify and that has been the Bobcats' trademark."
The Bobcats, who selected Adam Morrison in June's NBA draft, have been looking to bring in shooters since Michael Jordan became part-owner with the final say on all personnel decisions.
"It has always been a dream of mine to be in the NBA, but the moment was never right," said Herrmann, who scored seven points in one game for the Bobcats' summer league team in Orlando in July. "I look forward to learning from Coach Bickerstaff and his staff, moving to Charlotte and hopefully getting some pointers from Mr. Jordan."
The Bobcats had been in contract discussions with the 27-year-old Herrmann for several months and had him undergo a physical while he played at the world championships.
His signing gives the Bobcats 15 players under contract for next season.
