Well I never imagined he would play for UP considering he somewhat distanced himself from PH basketball in the past, it's probably a lot. Well at least that opened his eyes on how profitable playing basketball is in the Philippines. All of a sudden his "eligible" and very "interested" playing for us. Any day now he'll be endorsing Jollibee or declaring his love for adobo/sinigang or some other cringey stuff. It's only a matter of time till Sage follows his route
 
its back the the dave ildefonso issue as well. But for dave he has 0 leverage and should have accepted the deal.

Unfotunatey for QMB, he has to prove first that he is worth the money. He played well in the UAAP but unlike Fajardo, Sotto, Edu, and now Tamayo, QMB has not yet proven himself effective at the FIBA level. Of course, he has NCAA Div experience but FIBA is a different matter.

There’s a rumor that letran calamba’s campus was part of the estate of the mercado clan (Rizal family) that was sequestered by the Dominicans back in the 1870s

For me, QMB is legit. I have a feeling he intentionally hid his real ability in the regular season and then proceeded to show the whole bag in the do-or-die games. You don't just learn those moves and rebounding/defensive ability overnight. In hindsight, Edu may have had the higher potential but QMB produced pretty well in D1 which is indicative of his quality.

His further development would depend on how he gets pushed higher (like Tamayo).

That is why he or his agent shouldn't have asked for too much since being part of SGA's team would have been a good opportunity for him to show what he can do against professionals.

KBL and Bleague have acquired local players without the benefit of watching them play in an overseas pro tournament. Gutang was languishing in the MPBL. Cagu even played poorly in Dubai and yet still got taken. They have their methods of scouting. I think one criteria that they always like using is if a player is instrumental in winning a college championship in the Philippines. They trust how the cream rises to the top in our system. QMB checks that box.

If it's for PBA purposes, everyone locally already knows his local potential.
 
How much is too much? What amount is fair for a player like QMB anyway?

Arejola is much younger than the players you mentioned. I think he was either batch 1997 or 1998 in Zobel. Jason Webb was 1991, Luigi Trillo was 1992, Sison Twins were batch 1993. Dino Aldeguer batch 1994 or 1995.

I don't think Jong Uichico was ever a coach for the Zobel basketball team.

This was also the time when strength, conditioning/athleticism training was first introduced to the Zobel basketball program (one of the first to do so in the country) courtesy of legendary football coach Hans Smit.

Dino A originally was 93 along with Luigi Trillo but ended up graduating HS several years later whom Arejola definitely overlapped with. Sison twins are 94.

My bad, men's basketball has always been the first half of the the following year so if counting backwards... Arejola would be '98 as far as high school batches go so yeah, Team B for 3 years and made the lineup in 2001. Zobel produced a handful of good coaches including Jong who might have overlapped with Ronquillo before '94 for sure. Not a lot of players recruited and played in the men's division until Boris Aldeguer became the coach.

Yes, that's why I did a chronological order of next level players starting from Juno's batch down to Arejola. Wasn't a lot of them so it's easy to remember. I think 92 (batch of Boris A) is the only one that didn't have a notable college player. During that time everyone was from the area, no outside recruiting yet.

But the school did however have a few athletes from that era that probably could have become very good basketball players. Especially those who concentrated on football. Gabby Cui is an example, from playing football all through high school and then detouring to basketball in college and ending up being the PBA "baby bull." The Rojas brothers were also great athletes who could have cross-overed. Other very good basketball players (but had other priorities) were Mikee Romero and Renren Cayetano.

If you went farther down the list, Arejola did have a batchmate who made the lineup in CSB (I just can't remember his name). '99 had Nazario who wasn't as lucky as Arejola... '00 had Trillo who may have tried the Gec Chia route in Ateneo but ended up in CSB, '01 had Saldana from the States who was stashed in Zobel but never played in the juniors and was farther down the pecking order in DLSU with too many bigs (Adonis, Ramos, Sharma, Vainio, Gavino... even Wilson guarded bigs back in the day), '02 had Urra who was recruited from CSA and made Pumaren's roster but didn't stay long. I don't even remember anyone after that until the group of Atkins, the UP boys, Webb, and Fortuna after that.

For me it's still impressive that it produced that many next level players in the 90s just with local boys. Probably more than LSGH who has almost double the male population.

Side note on Urra, although he's from CSA, his family really lives near DLSZ.

Fast forward to the era of recruitment, some notable players who were passed over were Nelle, Escamis, etc. KQ (who is from the same place as Baclaan) were also from the area but I'm not sure if KQ ever considered Zobel like Baclaan.

I think it was Dino Perlas of Batch 1998 who made it to CSB's roster.

Mark Reyes of Batch 1994 also made it to Ateneo's roster if I am not mistaken.

There are layers to it having a lot to do with social class, location, and a player's height. This isn't a knock on schools with sattelite campuses like San Beda and FEU or schools with an unfortunate stereotype of pang-basketball lang like St. Francis of Assisi, because there's a lot of those all over the country... but the reason why parents in southern Manila who can afford to send their kids to Zobel do so is that they know it looks better on their kids' application form for DLSU and CSB while being known to produce students smart enough to be admitted to UP and AdMU on their own merit. That said, it's only about max-150 boys per batch in the 90's at Zobel who were at least 5'6. If a kid is taller than 6'4 before their growth spurt and can really play, Badolato or Jarin would have surely gotten a hold of them first for San Beda or Ateneo... so literally all Metro Manila high school teams in the 90's had like 6'2 centers and 5'9 point guards. Ultimately, Zobel wasn't really special in that regard... they just had better "bigs", bigger Jason Webb-type of guards, and definitely higher-level coaching than Muntinlupa National, Southridge, and San Beda-Alabang.

It's only 18 high schools teams that are affiliated with a college hoops program and a handful of them will surely scour the Earth for Filipino blood and talent. Then you factor in players from other leagues like Tiong Lian and CESAFI Juniors looking to impress college coaches. If Palarong Pambansa is a pipe dream instead of a formality, then you got NBTC (where that fight happened) and SBP-Pasarelle where the latak of the bunch have the most intense, dayo-like games.
