SMC withdrawing it's financial backing for UST. Via Snow Badua.

if that's the case, we could expect another mass exodus at Espana, no way UST can afford to keep all those recruits without SMC funding

unless someone is willing to foot the bill

Something's off. Ust just completed a solid haul of their jrs players. Its the middle of the offseason. If this is legit expect a riot by the thomasians.

Snow mentions that SMC will focus their resources on Gilas and their PBA teams. does this mean that SMC will cut its ties with Perpetual?

Likely the case, and actually portends for a scarier Ateneo IMHO. Someone posted earlier that this iteration of the Blue Eagles is a departure from the usual template that they follow in the CTB era - and that would be correct. We could potentially be seeing up to 40% of the team being composed of transfers and one-and-dones. This is a clear acknowledgement of both the unforeseen early departure of key players such as Balungay, Padrigao, Chiu, etc., as well as the lack of access to the local recruitment pipeline for blue chips. Having said that, this situation will likely change.
A deep run into the F4 and beyond will make Ateneo players “taste blood” and want to stay for more, as well as reinforce its stature as an aspirational destination for Pinoy hoops hopefuls.

Beg to disagree. The opportunity cost of recruiting 4 one and dones is less developmental minutes for their young veterans. Once the one and dones are gone, their young core are still left with little actual game experience. On the contrary, another wasted season for guys like Gamber, Bongo, and their other young guys may push them to transfer to the NCAA, go home, or just enter the pros/semi-pros. Also, I am not sure how game-changing these recruits are. Ladi is good. But the other 3, I'm not too sure. This reminds me of the time when DLSU had 3 one and dones and still they didn't make the final 4.

You would be right if the season goes south for them. But at the rate Gamber, Tuano, Ladi , Bonggo and even Espinosa have been balling out, chances are it won’t. A lot will depend on how the new recruits gel together with them though, so this summer in Spain will be critical from both an integration and game-sharpening perspective . Season still a few months away though, so feel free to disagree. This is all pre-season “haka haka” after all…

I dont think SMC is sponsoring Perpetual. Nagkataon lang SMC / FEU guys ang Coaching Staff. Even Snow didnt brought up na SMC is supporting Perps.

Like I said before, playing minutes and experience is a zero-sum game. The minutes/experience you're giving to the one-and-dones are minutes/experience you're taking away from the long-term players.

Gamber is the same player coming out of HS, he's always been a shooter/scorer (averaged 30+). But it's only now with major minutes that he's showing his capability. Espinosa also looks like he took a huge leap this year, and that's because he got good minutes last year. Tuano, Bongo, Bahay, etc also look like they can take a leap forward. And then they have guys who have been waiting who also look promising and will probably be better suited for lower minute roles (which the one-and-dones won't be satisfied with). There's a risk of ruining team chemistry/morale (which was the case with DLSU before).

There's a podcast called Boleros and they made a good point. If it was bigs that they got it would make sense (Ladi) because that's what they need. But at guard and wings, they already look solid.

Yeah. Unless Escobar is as good as Dwight, I don't get the move. Perhaps Tab and Quimpo are feeling the pressure after the failures of the last 2 seasons. What they are doing is very uncharacteristic.

I agree. And if I recall correctly, only QMB is the one that really worked well. And he's a big that could start for Gilas, that's a pretty high level.

Ramiro of DLSU was a starter ever since his freshman year and was a 2-time all-conference in US college. But he still had a hard time integrating/adjusting in one season. At least Ladi took a residency year and had time to adjust. Pinoy hoops is a different beast and takes time to adjust especially for non-bigs.

Homer just released an article that Tab might be on his way out. Hence he probably is going the one and done route for them to get the championship.

By the way, if Ladi is a one and done player, why di he have to undergo residency?

If im not mistake its because ladi hasnt graduated from college yet. The 2 new filams from cali are considered as graduate transfers, similar to qmb last season.
