UAAP Season 88

  • Thread starter Thread starter Silent Killer2
  • Start date Start date
As per Naveen, Andy Gemao is expected to play for the UP Maroons for Season 88. Is he eligible for 5 years?

Yes, 5 years.

But only two will be gone from this year’s UP lineup for sure. If one slot goes to Remogat, the other slot goes to Gemao. I assume Walker won’t make the team next year. So there’s only one extra slot for the likes of Coronel, Andres, Gagate or Yniguez. Who else will be gone from this year’s UP team?

I mean Andy's best chance to get to the USNCAA D1 was to dominate the U18 Asia Cup and atleast lead the Youth Team in U19. Too bad. We can't even have a homegrown filipino player in D1.

Probably would have had a better chance if he performed better for his prep team since they consistently play guys who have a shot of playing D1. Have watched a few of his games now and he’s an undersized sg who would need more time to develop as a pg though it’s still not a certainty he can develop the instinct of an actual pg. Not saying he’s a bad player but comparing him to D1 caliber guards he’s still behind

Things always work themselves out but if I were UP Id push for Yniguez over Briones.

Gemao reminds me so much of Mike Cortez's speed and athleticism without the playmaking ability.

Bayla seems to be the better prosspect but he was still a fringe d1 guy

Damn. He was supposed to be his batch's best guard. Not short , even touted to be as athletic as heck. You could smell this was going to happen when he started hanging out with them instead of going back to Canada when he came back.

Is he really not good enough or is the offer too good to ignore?

Maybe no full ride in D1 schools. and he got no NIL value.

Competente is doing residency with adamson right now, should be eligible next season. Reyes is still with the letran squires tho hasnt seen any real playing time is the last couple of years.

Pretty sure he is a D1 Caliber. I feel like he just ran out of time to get scouted. He was not really given a big opportunity with Veritas, and he is just starting to have a role with Royal Crown. He won't be able to get to those team by trying out had he was not capable at all.

I feel like he deserves atleast to be in a low-major college program. Hell, I feel like he can also keep up with mid-major college programs.

I mean Caelum did get to the Nevada team, some eligibility shit just happened.

They don't have the same playstyle and position but I think Andy's ceiling is higher than Caelum's.

Andy just ran out of time. Which is why I think if Keifer Alas still wants to get to the USNCAA, he should be playing in US by now.

Smart move from Gemao from a business standpoint. He gets to receive a huge stipend from UP while playing guaranteed minutes. He could possibly play in the West, but his minutes aren't guaranteed and it's not exactly cheap playing abroad if your family isn't rich. Japeth's dad had to work multiple odd jobs to support his son's foray in US college basketball. This was also the reason why Arvin Tolentino couldn't accept the Duke tryout that was given to him.

How about Kobe Paras's case. Were they able to get some sponsorship or was it Benjie who shouldered the cost?

Simple No division 1 offer for gemao. They'll stay if theirs an offer. It's not about monetary thing.

Only JD and QMB will be gone. Championship team almost intact, but arguably the two most important pieces will be gone.

JD’s slot surely becomes Remogat’s. That’s a downgrade defensively, but an upgrade in outside shooting. Remogat’s abiliity to pull up in pick-and-roll situations opens up a lot of offensive opportunities.

QMB’s slot most likely goes to Gagate. Big for a big. That’s a major downgrade, but now there will be more guaranteed minutes for Alter and whoever the FSA will be. Gagate will be played as a 4 (as was already the case before his injury last preseason, and in the UCAL), where UP will be looking to utilize his newfound midrange game and height advantage over other 4s down low.

To make room for the others, there will be subtractions. Among the former NU boys now entering their 5th year, only Abadiano and Alarcon have categorically stated they will be returning. Torres is likely to return, but Felicilda’s spot could be on the line. Walker should be replaceable too.

Coronel and Yniguez for Walker and Felicilda might be the trade, as things stand right now. Gemao for Torres possible.

The wildcard for UP is if Lopez and Bayla take leaps or even significant incremental improvements for next year.

Why would UP continue to fund Gemao in the West if there's no guarantee that he'll suit up for the Maroons?
