Defending Champs: UP Fighting Maroons
Konov should have been used more. He would have been a matchup problem at the 2-3 with his height.
Is UP gonna start a new trend in the league by recruiting one and dones with the success of the QMB experiment?
They didn't start this trend. Tagal na ginagawa ng DLSU yan. Heck, the rule about masters degrees vs. second degree was made because of DLSU and Gerwin Gaco.
After Gaco, it was Cholo Villanueva then JV Casio.
Really? I got the same ID number as Cholo Villanueva and Mike Gavino (who actually transfered to UP with Mika Vainio after maxing out their playing years in La Salle but somehow UP called it a "transfer") so I always assumed Cholo reached unit-immortality playing in 2008 at age 24-25 when he was a recruit in 2001. As for Casio, he was a legit then-16-year-old rookie in '03 so playing 5 years in '08 was normal making him just 21-22 playing for Toroman in Gilas One. K12 was introduced in 2013 so players then don't need to take a Masters Degree or have its school do some bogus magic for them to be be playing college ball at 24. It was barely four decades ago when seeing a 19-year old playing high school basketball was taboo, heck now it's as normal as players playing dayo/ligang-labas games.
Bottom line, a lot of schools through the years have brought in players who aren't good enough to be pro but have a significant phyiscal and somewhat skill advantage playing against 17 to 21 year-olds. QMB's case is unique because rookies are coming in at 18 thanks to K12 and yet he's been dominant in a space where fewer and fewer local college players who aren't that much younger than him will actually make it past their first PBA contract just because he should at least a PBA player in his 2nd year but isn't.
JD to Suwon KT just confirmed
he was sometimes heckled a grandpa because of his longevity in college. People forgot he was once demoted to team b and still played after the suspension. He really maximized his playing years and was a living proof of the seven-years-out-of-hs rule.
Casio completed his academic eligibility prior to his 5th year. So upon the persuasion of coach franz he came back, enrolled in another course just to play out his 5th and final year.
When do we expect news on possible recruits for each team? By January, perhaps?
