UAAP season 87

Let's be frank. Both teams UP and La Salle are not 100% good guys. UP has Alarcon and JD with their reputation as being dirty and you have the likes of Austria and Gollena from La Salle who are really good at taunting opponents.
Watched live with pretty good seats. Gollena throws elbows during box outs to the chest of players . He got Lopez right in front of me. Austria moves like a troll but i didn’t see anything overtly dirty .

Great game both teams showed a lot of holes that should be exploited moving forward. Feliciida can’t shoot and shouldn’t play that much which is understandable since JD is out. Going under screens and having no shooting for a 5’7 guy at this level isn’t gonna end well. Lopez is all over the place and the game needs to be simplified for him. Torculas and Belmonte sometimes look like they don’t play within their teams offense . Steven’s was useless out there as well. QMB is a fantastic player great rebounder and vertical defender. He has that Thirdy thing that he always looks tired but isn’t actually tired . Bayla has a ton of potential he gets it. Alarcon also eats mismatches but his go to move can’t always be a hessi pull.

DLSU also had a lot of missed coverages cause Philips was wild all over the place showing out of control. They also don’t have anyone who can get into the teeth of defenses and playmake. David is a 3 and guy , Ramiro looks the part but is bbq on defense. Macalalag is gonna be that guy soon but not yet.
KQ being able to move off the ball was great and his jumpshot is high af. He just can’t create of the bounce that well. When he does he picks it up a bit far from the basket. He got stripped by alarcon as well. Vhoris tuff and Gollena and i get why his HS coaches called Jcee Kawhi . He had no emotions and wears like size 15 shoes. He’s also really good

Hmm it's hard for me to think taunting is comparable to physically hurting other players.

Also, I understand that CJ taunts. I wouldn't like it if I was on the opposite end either. He's always been like that since his rookie year but Gollena is just animated and kinda goofy.

Well, your previous point was about DLSU players being all classy on the court so I just gave an example of Austria who's really known for taunting. If you have a different definition of classy, then I will respectfully defer this discussion. To end, my point is just that no UAAP team is exactly clean and full of class. Basketball is a physical and ego-driven game and there will always be 1 or 2 bad apples in a bunch of 16 players.

It’s just because UP’s whole MO the past two years is to physically overwhelm the opponent . If they can’t out athlete / out physical the opposing team they are pretty stagnant . No real shooters just Fortea who they refuse to use they have a lot of guys who have no range at all. If they can’t bully call by crashing boards , pressing playing physical d . They don’t really have enough juice

Shooting 10% from 3 point range isn't going to get you anywhere. That's the game right there. Same old story from UP.

I have no problem with physicality. Lord knows I play that way too. It's another to do cheap tricks and extra stuff that has no place in organized basketball.

so apparently its topex, I remember the FTW episode about the red bull team lol.

maybe we should wait for OneSports to release the video before passing judgement? I don’t get what Topex gains by doing that & in front of a lot of people, and cameras everywhere. If proven true, UAAP should suspend him.

Id be surprised if there are any vids. Especially from One Sports.

No proof then. There were thousands in the arena, and a lot take vids for their tiktok or whatever. There are also a lot of camera angles from the official sources, so it should be easy to trace for UP? Again, what’s Topex to gain? Did he wait until the referee wasn’t looking before he did it? Just find it hard to believe a coach would do that, esp unprovoked, and at the risk of getting caught. Totally not worth it

Its hard, spit is transparent. Its not something easily verified especially if one isnt focused there.

It looks likes Tab's weakness is in recruiting/people skills. Its why he failed to remain as Gilas coach and its why Ateneo is currently last.

To be fair, this more an Ateneo problem; their womens volleyball team is also experiencing the same problem

Tab also had difficulty with his player retention this season as Ballungay, Gomez and Brown left later. The latter two arent even in the PBA at the moment.

Well, if you watch UP during timeouts, it's probably Luanzon (offense) and Chua (defense) who does the x's and o's. I agree with your assessment though that Gold seems more like a motivational coach rather than a tactician.

i think coach Gold ia better being a team manager role rather than being a head coach. He used to be one of the responsible persons who recruited for Chiang Kai Shek when they were dominating the Fil Chi Leagues and even the players he had in Adamson Jrs. And NSNU.

I thought the “more of a manager than a x&o coach”
was for Perasol that’s why he was replaced by Goldwyn and made team manager. Was getting Goldwyn more of to secure the NU boys and Gagate and Gemao?

And Torres himself just speculated, just because according to him, it was only Topex near him.

Sorry but Torres ain’t exactly an exemplar of good sportsmanship himself so why should we believe him?

UP is like the bad AAU teams. With the same ills caused by that approach.

Loaded with as much talent as possible. They overwhelm with sheer size and athleticism, epitomized by Lopez. The problem arises when an opponent is able to match/neutralize them, they react by doing the same thing but just harder and faster. It's why the play looks so wild. Also leads to hero ball.

If they played with more discipline, had a more balanced roster with well-defined roles and focused more on defense (instead of trying to run-and-gun everyone), it's not a stretch that they'd be in a chip dynasty by now up until the near future.

Spit or no spit, this is some unnecessary drama that both sides will have their own story of. I'd say this was actually counter productive for UP as these shenanigans stopped their momentum during the 3rd quarter.

In the last three games of UP this 1st round, I noticed that UP has a harder time making baskets when their opponent is also making baskets. Too reliant on transition opportunities created by their defense.

Last season, they struggled in halfcourt sets, which was exposed against La Salle. So, same-o, same-o?

How come LeBron Lopez hasn't grown as a player compared to last year? I thought the kid has all the tools to be special. Heck, he was signed to play pro ball before he stepped in a college campus. Yet, he is slowed down when forced to take outside shots.
