So I guess Ryan Buenafe is studious.

i'd say it's more of a tab thing or their current sports director thing than an ateneo thing. there have been academically inept ateneo student athletes in the past but it didn't stop them from suiting up. it seems though that the qpi thing is more strictly enforced during tab's era (to the basketball team's chagrin).

I think what a lot of people misunderstand about ateneo's qpi requirements is that when they say "did not meet", its does not neccessarily mean they failed. Its just that all athletes(not just basketball) nead to reach a certain grade(which im not sure, maybe another atenean has shared about this before). So most of those guys are prolly just average students who didnt do enough academically. Tho its worth mentioning that in my time there, the passing rate for all subjects was aready 75. Whereas in most schools its only 70. Now ateneo doesnt neccessarily kick out those students who didnt meet the qpi standards, especially those who didnt fail, instead they give them a chance to earn back those grades and redeem themselves to the standards ateneo has set. Kaya guys like thirdy and raffy verano was able to suit up for ateneo again.

As for Buenafe even with his reputation, he admitted himself that he never failed, so im guessing he just didnt make high enough grades, espscially in 2011. Coupled that with his issues with art dela cruz. Ateneo decided to remove him muna from the team. And it is worth mentioning that buenafe's main problem really wasnt acads but the discipline that was also needed by the sport. As he admitted himself he hates attending all those trainings. I mean you guys have seen it during his latter stint in ateneo and of course his pro career. Dude was well out of shape, mainly because dude didnt give the same effoert in training compared to the real games.

Now do i agree that ateneo's strict academic requirements turns off a lot of really great players from the team? For sure. But its been like that for ages and i dont see Ateneo the institution bending over for their basketball team, moreover players who may or may not even be deserving in their eyes, of the ateneo education. Its quite funny when people point out ateneo's higher passing rates compared to both dlsu and up when what matters is if those guys that got admitted to the university end up finishing their degrees in ateneo.

Honestly, QPI should just be "pass," as in just the passing mark (I dunno if there should be no fails, or if you just need a passing average). Just don't be a dunce. Not all athletes are academically gifted.

I agree, to be honest the quality of players has gone down. Just read somewhere that benilde won by 20+ pts against ateneo in a tuneup who played their projected season 87 lineup with teir fsa balogun playing. Even in their team B. They got smashed by mapua, even once trailing by 40 pts yesterday. Atleast UP's team b was competetive with both Lyceum and even winning against Olfu(solid team not in uaap/ncaa).

I remember a time when athletes from other sports were complaining about the double standard for the basketball team. Tab really changed things.

Spent my hs years there sir then, ust and benilde for my undergrad, then went back to ateneo for post grad haha. I was classmates pa back then with kiefer ravena in high school.

I relative who just retired from teaching in Adamson said that they only require their athletes to attend classes. No exams or projects required. They'll fail if they don't meet the minimum attendance required per subject.

Thought they were strict in Acads as well, Flowers and Lenda Douanga were forced to sit out their remaining years due to academics.

I am from the Adamson and I know this for a fact. I had student-athlete classmates (circa 2010-11) who were little to no existent in the class but gets a pass. It was very unfair for regular students like me since I had to overcome the tedious grading system that time (which has been in effect since 2010).

I don't know if things change, though.

i wonder whats the bare minimum to support a uaap team now. Like UE , feu and adu.

30M a year?

Signing Bonuses
Allowance for 20 players
Overseas Trips for training and scouting for coaches
Food and Lodging.
Bonuses
Salaries of Coaching staff and other personel.

UP only lost by 2pts vs a KBL team. Migs Oczon is the Asian import of Ulsan Hyundai.

This UP team is scary.
