UAAP season 86

  • Thread starter Thread starter Silent Killer2
  • Start date Start date
It was a battle of 2 UST teams earlier at the Sulit BBI. The team w/ Peter Osang fielded a 7-man lineup, with Ashon Andrews, Geremy Robinson, Paranada, Leland Estacio, Escobido, and Jiro Sevilla (from team B and DLSZ).

They still handily won against the team with Tounkara, Danting, and a bunch of other aspirants from team b. Ice played better on his 2nd game with them, while Tounkara is still a kangkarot.

Isnt Peter Osang an SF? Who will start as C for UST?

Let's see come Season 87, when he becomes eligible. They have a local big man in their pool, Gelo Crisostomo, as well as Echo Laure, who are expected to comprise their big men, alongside Adama Faye for S86.

questions, student-athletes who got redshirted due to academics are not prohibited to train with the team and could still be part of the team b right? (cant remember buenafe and thirdy’s case)

Not sure where he said it but I remember Thirdy said Coach Tab didn’t allow him to train (with Team A at least).

only thing i can remember would be CJ, Arvin and Pingoy leaving admu due to academic woes (or because they were perasol’s recruits)

Buenafe takes the cake though, aside from academic issues, he often attends practice with a hangover

Wrong Players on academic probation are not allowed to join team practices, work out with team coaches or trainers or join any team functions. They can train at Moro but not when the team is using the facility. Same rules apply to participation with team B, not allowed. Thirdy hit the weight room by himself and practiced on his own or with other former high school varsity players not officially part of team A or B. They are also not allowed to participate in school intramurals.

With Padrigao still not playing for ateneo and if he's out for next season, who do you think will start at pg for the blue eagles?

They’ve been starting Jared Brown along with Koon the past few weeks (both in Asiabasket and a few games of their Australia camp).

The thing with Ateneo is, the system is drilled into all the players so the PG is somewhat replaceable. Although the talent level of Padrigao is way higher than whoever will replace him, the team will still execute. Just like when Belangel suddenly left.

Shows the importance of having continuity and chemistry in having a long-term system-based program, personnel are interchangeable. Something our national program should implement.

I hope UP adopts this model too and focuses on homegrown player development than overrecruitment. Good thing they put Goldwin in charge of the HS program. Good defense, development of tall, versatile wings and tweeners, and quick transition offense.

Ateneo vs. Corsa Tires in Asiabasket was one hell of a game. Ballungay lowkey can contend for that MVP next season, albeit needs more consistency. Just hope he can get that FIBA exemption rule too, the national team needs prototype players of his mold.

Unfortunately with Ateneos strict acad reqs Tab ends up developing mostly ineligible Filfors. I dont believe the Filfors are inherently better academically but I would say native English communication and comprehension skils are their advantge for major subjects that would likely be english.

At the very least Tab and his Filfor majority crew are good competition for the local coaches and their mostly eligible crews.

Acad requirements was a choice of Tab not Ateneo. Before him Ateneo was producing geniuses like Ryan Buenafe.

Also Forth's acads issues were rumored here as early as before season 85 so I dont think it's that strict to begin with.

If I had to guess, Ateneo is having problems budget wise dealing with the likes of UP or La Salle for homegrowns so they go for foreigners who don't need money ASAP.

It is actually Ateneo’s rule across all their sports programs, an above average QPI to be able to play varsity. The only difference now for them is that Tab is enforcing that mandate more strictly. Tab is not meddling with their acads at all. If players do not meet the required QPI, it ends their. As far as I remember, Buenafe also red shirted a year (s74) as he was not able to meet the academic requirement. BUT there was even rumors that him redshirting that year was not due to academics but personal issues. A former classmate of his that I personally know said that Buenafe diligently attended classes, and he along with other several Eagles that time placed effort in their academics.

The strict QPI requirement is a big reason why they’re struggling to secure local blue chip talents. Most blue chips do not want that rigorous academic grind believe it or not. Why go to a team with strict grade requirements when you can choose one with a more lax acad reqs. Not to mention the monetary benefits/incentives is more or so the same.

So why do you think the Filfors seemingly are not affected by this? Are they simply better at acads than homegrowns?

Filfors ARE actually affected by this rule . We need look No further than at Raffy Verano who missed a season in order to recover drom his academic difficulties . Par for the course at Ateneo to have these requirements ; it’s the “nature of the beast”.

Buenafe spent six years with Ateneo without ever getting his diploma, how the hell did he reach his QPI requirement? Same goes with the Ateneo Seven. That was just a coincidence that seven blue eagles had to go when Tab entered? I even remember a former Ateneo football player complaining about bias academics wise towards the basketball team during that period.

nahiya naman si Enrico Villanueva sa inyo. all schools, including ADMU, has ways to hep their athletes go through the rigors of being student athletes. how they do it differs specially if we start talking to players that has profound impact to the team. to remove focus on just ADMU, Baguio got suspended by UST for not attending class.

there’s a urban legend in UST that there’s a certain prof who threw a chair at cyrus baguio because of his poor academic performance (RE: consistent failures in recitations)

edit: Mac Cardona says hi as well
