UAAP season 86

if you look at his batang gilas performance as well as being invited to play for gilas, he cant be just a troy rike 2.0 as the kid is capable. one can argue that in his previous games in uaap he was hesistant and lacks aggressiveness overall but then again the potential was there as his skills was already known before. maybe they did not expect him to do a lot. but then again this is still the first round and next ateneo games, for sure amos will be marked. however one player that seems lackluster is geo chiu? is he injured or something? i expected more of him this season.

Ditto on Geo. Expected more from Geo since I think this is his last year. But for this game, I think he got injured tripping on his own foot (or cramped up?) but he didn't go back in anymore. Hopefully it's not too serious.

He is a Phenom guy, so if he will transfer, maybe just maybe its going to be in DLSU or CSB? Plus it doesnt hurt that he is from LSGH

He won't get playing time in DLSU either. Mike Philips is still there, and they have a new FSA (who is much better than their current one) coming in.

They are not deep in the front court though. After Malick, big men rotation is thin. Alter is too raw and there's a reason Pablo and Gagate are not given significant minutes (they're both too slow for the seniors game, defensively).

I've always thought the thin big man rotation of this UP team will be the reason why they wouldn't sweep this season, and this game showed exactly why. They also had a hard time against DLSU for the same reason. Make Diouf work on defense and his offense suffers greatly.

Teka, other posters in other threads said that Pablo could switch onto guards, and I believed them. So, how is Pablo slow? Is he slow, period, or is the seniors' game too quick for him?

Seniors game is too quick for him. From the games I have seen, both he and Gagate cannot keep up yet.

Watched them as Greenies even then they didn't have the quickness to keep up with wings and guards defensively so they should exclusively guard bigs. Offensively tho, pablo can drive it in, while gagate is more of your prototypical big in the post.

Ay, if that's so, UP should have just stuck with Demisana, who has better awareness on defense and is longer.

i haven't watched the juniors, only the the fiba u18 asian qualifiers. both pablo & gagate were very mobile and able to switch on defense in those games.

It’s just unfortunate that Pablo had little playing time in a loaded UP frontline. He has to play behind the ultra athletic Lopez and veteran Torcullas. Sometimes Pablo gets pushed behind the long and versatile Mark Belmonte, who is also older than Pablo. If Lopez doesn’t turn pro, another year of suffering for Pablo. He is lucky because the guys ahead and himself can slide to 3 and that frees up playing time for him.

More than Pablo, I think Gagate will be even buried deeper. Next year he has to play behind the new, taller and athletic FSA. Then he has to fight against the older Gani Stevens. And there’s Sean Alter as well. Mas mabuburo si Gagate compared to Pablo.

I think Pablo and Gagate are probably just as fast/quick/athletic as Amos. You only have to look at their free throws to know the problem, they can't shoot. UP needs floor spacers to take advantage of Diouf and overall athleticism.

Also is Francis Lopez able to play defense on the wing? I don’t watch the games but saw the highlights and he seems to have a problem moving laterally guarding Amos in OT

Mason Amos is probably the most skilled guy offensively his height in the Philippines. Between him and Tamayo

When he was trying out for the gilas men's pool, teammates were comparing his shooting to Caidic. That coming from fellow players is the highest recommendation.

But as usual, knee-jerk casuals will expect a barely 19 year old rookie to be a completely developed and consistent player. Newsflash for them: we have 20 year old players in 11th grade.

The exciting thing about him and Tamayo is the mental part. It seems they get better when the moment is pressure packed. Those players are special.
