UAAP season 86

NU proving they are legit contenders. So far at least.

UP held to 9 first quarter points.

Looking like teams are figuring out how to play Ateneo. This Ateneo team has weak guard play and no reliable shot creator. If your main guard is Sean Quitevis then you know its going to be a long season.

Why is UP using 3 midget guards in their 1st 5? Why is Torculas & Lopez being used as 4? Hoping that UP doesn't win the championship and that Pablo and Gagante move to another school where they can receive more playing time.

Too bad UP looking just too good and strong even against another contender in NU. Like I said before, UP has a switch that they can turn on anytime. NU was competitive up until the second quarter, but once UP turned on the switch in the third, it was all over.

Key take-aways in the NU game:

1. No one in the UAAP can match up Lopez's athleticism, not even M. Phillips. Also, I don't understand this board's fascination with with M. Phillips. He is very athletic but still very raw at this point and he's also FIBA ineligible. I would rather have Lopez and KQ in future iterations of Gilas. KQ is far more skilled than Phillips and his three-pointer looked wet recently.

2. Cagulangan, Cansino, Alarcon, Lopez, and Diouf is UP's death lineup. They're just too good defensively.

3. UP has a bunch of players 6'5 and above who are very versatile and can switch defensively with ease: Briones, Belmonte, Pablo, and Alter.

4. Gagate is the odd man out because of his defensive limitations but he will be serviceable big in another school. I don't see him getting meaningful minutes with how stacked UP is at the moment.

UP is a pro level team, not just PBA pro level but asian pro level as it has consistently beaten KBL pro teams

If you count the last filoil tourney, adamson beat ateneo there as well in a game winning buzzer beater 3 by montebon

Dawn Ochea shot and the first game of the season a couple yeaes back. Ahanmisi half court shot . All montage moments

The UST Growling Tigers kinda reminded me of the 1995 Ginebra San Miguel 1-19 record ng Ginebra in the last 2 conferences and coach Pido Jarencio played for that Ginebra team. Ginebra drafted Marlou Aquino and signed Bal David they became championship contenders in 1996.

What is Policarpio's height from DLSU? He seems to be another player in the mold of Oftana. I like it.

UE is doing the most with the least. Props to Precious and Coach Jack.

Remogat
Cansino
Koon
KQ
Diouf

Seem like the best in their respective postions
Honorable mention to Nelle, Kai B,Lopez

He has the length, ofcourse athleticism. What some posters like about him is his good defensive and rebounding instincts. He may be raw in offense but, like Kouame and AJ, posters are looking at him for his defense and rebounds.

Also, you are correct that he is ineligible, for now. However, he has been establishing his case for the exemption. Here are the reasons:

1. he has been a resident in the Philippines for 4 years and counting;
2. he will spend his whole collegiate basketball career here in the Philippines; 3. he is about to finish his studies here in the Philippines;
4. he might be raw now offensively and I find it to be a good thing. why? because this is where the Philippines can hone him and that's what FIBA prefers.

If he somehow plays in the PBA, that will further strengthen his chances for the FIBA exemption.

KQ's defense is suspect and we need players, especially in the forward and bigman position, that can defend. Lopez and Philips will be welcome additions for Gilas because they can defend.

So you are saying UST will get to draft number one next year? lol haha :D

Who are the best 5 performing rookies so far aside from Amos?

Yes. Unlike in the PBA you don't get rewarded for losing in the UAAP. You need money, this is solved with SMC support, to attract good talent. I don't understand why they are not playing Faye though. I don't understand what is to be gained by pplaying 6'6 overweight Laure as your main center. I would be frustrated if I were Cabanero because it doesnt seem UST is making moves to build a more competitive team.

Rotation is 3 guards, a wing or a tweener, and a big. Man. Don't like it either, but when half the team is composed of rotation-quality guards, this is what happens.
