Turkish Prospects

It seems we have found our Theo Papaloukas. I have never seen such composure of a Turkish guard. No matter how close the time is he finds mostly the best way. He scores, he finds the best option and he can easily break pressure. I am amazed, really in love with Melih Tunca.

Melih tunca-kaan onat-derin can the new papaloukas-diamantidis-spanoulis ;)

Before the tournament, nobody really expected Demirel to have such a significant impact, especially in an environment where Mara and Samodurov were heavily hyped. Now, everyone, including respected foreign authorities, agrees that this tournament showed Demirel as one of the most promising big men of his generation. Demirel has sparked excitement not only due to his statistical contributions but also because of his highly inclined skill set to transition into top-level basketball and his body structure that is highly receptive to strengthening.

So far, among our U-NT's, I believe Demirel's performance in this tournament has been the most significant gain of the summer. Considering the need in the PG position, I understand the basketball community's heightened interest in Tunca's performance in this tournament. However, I believe people have somewhat overlooked appreciating Demirel's performance as a consequence of this.

In short, Demirel displayed a performance level on par with elite youth level Turkish big men like Sengun, Bona, and Yurtseven, who have shown serious skills in youth categories in recent years. He finished the tournament ranking 1st in rebounds, 3rd in blocks, and 11th in scoring. If he gets playing time in a minimum TBL-level team where he can take on responsibilities, I believe his development will continue linearly.

Furthermore, according to direct information from Coach Erdem Can, Tunca will occasionally be part of the BSL rotation in the A team. Personally, I think it would be a terrible approach to hinder the development momentum of a player with lower physical attributes just for the sake of inefficient 3-4 minutes in garbage time. Clearly, sending him on loan to TBL seems to be the most suitable alternative. Hopefully, the possibility of a dual license is still on the table.

Nobody overlooks Demirels performance. I really loved the whole team playing. The offense was fluent and the team had all elements it needed but as you said we already solved our center problem and the PG requirement needs to be addressed immediately.

My comment about Demirel's performance not being adequately recognized was not related to what has been previously written on this forum. Indeed, for Turkish basketball to make a noticeable leap in its level, it needs a PG whose name everyone would indisputably put at the top of the list of the fantasy rosters. Kenan Sipahi has shown the ability to lead a team at lower levels, but we now need a player who can demonstrate this ability at the highest level while also creating his own score. Tunca might be a candidate, but his potential is not high enough to become a PG who can completely change the face of the national team.

What we require is a prospect of superior caliber, one who is mentally resilient, promising in physical attributes, astute in on-court decision-making, confident in shooting, adept in ball-handling skills, and possesses excellent court vision. The existence of point guards who only possess a fraction of these fundamental attributes during certain periods has led to the team's struggles in this position. Overcoming that deficiency in this position will pave the way for Turkish basketball to compete at the top level.

Whether Ustun or Onat can reach this level will be seen during the European Championship. So far, their performances and impacts have remained somewhat localized, and it remains to be seen whether they can dominate against their European peers. They will play crucial games to assess where their careers might lead.

By the way, there is a significant floor-general point guard shortage throughout Europe. This shortage is not unique to us; even countries like Lithuania and Spain, known for producing basketball players who combine skill and basketball mind, are facing problems with their latest generation of players. Relying on American scoring point guards might seem easy to fill this position, but even traditional basketball countries' club teams are struggling with these issues, and local point guards are getting fewer opportunities to take on responsibilities everywhere. European basketball is going through challenging times, especially now. Finding a PG who can lead the team, elevate teammates' performances, and create his own scoring opportunities in these times is undoubtedly challenging.

Hazarding a prediction based on my impressions during u19, with a bit older kids, I think he has a long way to go. We will actually see if he can mature into roles if takes minutes in the senior stage.

According to the FIBA website, our 12-man U16 European Championship squad

Deniz Ulas Urunlu - Atahan Akbas - Kaan Onat - Cengiz Sarp Coskun - Mert Kocagozoglu - Derin Can Ustun - Aldin Turkoglu - Alperen Duruksu - Beren Demir Ozdemir - Ahmet Arda Aydin - Yavuz Selim Kara - Eymen Ege Menevse

I am surprised that Osman Nurveren is not in the squad.

Aldin turkoglu who was out of the rotation with efes u16 is with the NT, huh . He's probably related to hidayet turkoglu and otherwise he wouldn't be on the roster

It looks like Buyuktuncel gets some attention. The ringer puts him 23 and Bona 29. I hope their developments continue and both get drafted in 2024, especially Bona.

And tomorrow starts the most important tournament for us because of Derin Can Ustun & Kaan Onat. The only goal is gold.

Do you really believe that we are that good?

Dont let the bad results of the last few years fool you. We are not in every generation worse as the 3-4 top teams. If you have Derin Can & Kaan at U16 then your goal can only be gold. They are not Mert Akay, Omercan Ilyasoglu etc. and not a passive player like Okben Ulubay, or not only scorers without real impact on game like Furkan & Onuralp. The tournament must be pure enjoyment for us. If we go for gold, Kaan looks more like a MVP here in this team. But it doesnt matter who becomes MVP, both have to play a very good tournament, in the end thats all what matters.

Wow, Italy is just too good for us. Our guys are far away from even average guys. Our stars are just too small, slow and weak for Italy. I impressed by Ustun but now, he is outclassed athletically and defensively. I wonder whether Italy is so good or we are so bad.

Its both.

It's hard to evaluate kaan onat and derin can's performance because they are playing with bums but it looked like derin can had a really hard time moving his feet on defense. Also feel like he's developing into a SG more than a point guard.

Dont overreact after 1 game at u16. Transition defense + team defense was a disaster. Plus if you have zero inside game at U16 then its really hard and this affects your whole game. Osman Nurveren would not help either, he is a bum too, at least at this stage. Wait and see what the next games will show.

Number 23, 28 and 61 seem better. With these 3, Kaan and Derin, we might play decent basketball. I little bit hyped with Kaan and Derin. It is too early but Tunca is too important for us. We must get full potential of him.

This Tunca was not able to bring the ball at a level like ANGT in March but was the best player in this summer so far in our U-teams. So much can change in a very short time. Melih had the chance for 3 tests this tournament, Spain, France, Serbia and he hasnt played against either team. He must show that he can survive against real defense. No doubt he has the talent for that but he is too soft, if he can overcome this then sky is the limit for him. For example, shooting is not a problem for him, although he had a very bad 3p. %. We must follow players over a longer period then we will react better to their performances.

10 Cengiz Coskun is an interesting prospect with future.

I can't watch the match but another defeat. I can't believe that our 07 generation is that bad. Probably wrong and undeserved player selection. But one think is clear that both Onat and Ustun are not dominant player in international level. Still they can be useful but far away from expected.
