Turkish Prospects

Derin Can Ustun 07 with 5 points in 3 minutes for Bahcesehir. I am sure we will see him in the Turkish BSL for limited minutes. Without a doubt the biggest guard prospect in Turkey now.

Berke Buyuktuncel with a very solid overall game. He is just a great defender and today his shots were falling too. 8 points for him today

Ozgur Cengiz 05 also very matured for his age and 2 three pointer today. He is growing to his role very well.

This gives a luxury problem for the U18 team. Emir Arda Sivas and Ozgur Cengiz are set. I am not sure if there will be room for Emre Melih Tunca.

Sometimes U14 is great. This year its great because of Omer Kutluay. Just incredible talent. Second very big prospect is Feners F Kaan Belgutay. There are other talented players etc. but if a player is real big time prospect like Omer Kutluay, Kaan Belgutay, this is really very very satisfying. Omer Alp Elitas(big) could be a huge prospect too in 1-2 years. Zero maturity, talented with fast feets, he can drive, shoot, good touch, over 195, body like a baby, not fat or thin(most turkish players are fat or thin), has no fear(most turkish players are soft). A player like this will get better every year. Im following him since this season. Could be the second big prospect from Bahcesehir after Derin Can Ustun.

I like Tunca. He is a real PG but he is so thin. Actually it is really hard to decide which one is better Tunca or Sivas. But we have Sivas type of energy players but we do not have much real PG prospects like Tunca. So I think Tunca's development is more important for Turkish BB. Karahan played nice game but I do not like his attitude. It feels like he is not giving his best. Bro you are nothing now. It is a final game. Alright you are in the Efes roster for few games but you are not better than all players on the court. At least you need to prove that. Few words for Onat, I do not like his athleticism and body. I think his body will limit his potential.

This U-14 Turkish Championship is a bit stagnant comparison to recent versions and overall talent volume failed to impress me. People are justifiably focused on Kutluay so much, he stands out in this group of players easily. He is really talented, he is already in the pocket. The other guy who is striking with his pure talent is Kartal Bora Simsek of Cankaya University and I even dare to say he can be a Kutluay-caliber prospect if he experiences a better basketball atmosphere in Istanbul local league. I found his Ankara local league stats aswell, despite being a volume scorer for now, he promises a bright future through diversity of his talent. He is a combo guard just like Kutluay and he seems a better handler/shooter than him and physically looking promising aswell. Of course we need to see him in a better youth setup and better regional league as mediocre teams fail to build good habits in their young players that strike them badly in long term. He is playing too individually unlike Kutluay, but this is understandable by thinking his team's talent level. A possbible Efes/Fener/Dacka move would be great for him to see what he can do in a lesser role in a better team.

I had a chance to watch Yigit Hamza Mestoglu in U-20&U-19 NT camp. Actually, his prospect profile has decreased a bit over the years and he is not looked a bright youngster anymore, thinking he is not the leading prospect of his generation unlike he used to be in his U-16 times. His size didn't grow steadily and unfortunately this fact limits his chance in high level basketball. He is trying to play PF with being only 2.00 m, but surprisingly I liked how he has been trying to transform his skill-set to play combo forward. He is still heavily playing with his back to the basket, but his perimeter threat looks deadly enough as they can't ignore it anymore.

He can be a bruiser type of hybrid player who mostly play PF, he is visibly stronger than even last season, a bull, hardly believe what I saw when he posted up the rest of the guys, since he was unstoppable under the basket despite his average size for his position. I expect him to leave a more positive impression in this year's NT tournaments and rise his stock quite. He can cover SF/PF/C basing upon his arsenal and this kind of player is gold today's basketball.

I don't know whether David Mutaf is satisfied with his career or not, but I see that his career trajectory is not heading in a positive direction. His coach's statement about him is not so positive and always addressing his liabilities on defense. Gran Canaria used to play proper basketball and they mostly consider offense and defense balance before giving a major role to a player in their roster. As I have been following Mutaf for years, I haven't seen a significant progress that is worth mentioning in his defensive department. Still too slow, trying to defend with his hands instead of his legs, I mean shortly very amateurish acts on defense.

It would be beneficial for his career advancement to spend a season on a team where he can showcase his offensive skills (mostly shooting skills) with having enough shot volume, rather than playing for a team like Gran Canaria that plays more target driven, regular basketball. He is an important target player for teams that offer playing at a fast pace and being less reliant on strict structure of their playbooks where defense is not the priority to take minutes. We will see if he will have the chance to play for bigger teams with ambitions after being able to show his offensive skills sufficiently. In case he gets enough opportunities on offense, I believe he will make a remarkable breakthrough next season with impressive statistics. However, whether he will choose to go to a team that will provide him with this opportunity or prefer training with more quality players is entirely up to him.

My personal preference for him would be Besiktas. By being the part of the new structure next season, he would have a chance to to display his best abilities throughout the season and prove everyone if he is a NT-bound player. Everything aside, even if he proves that offensively, I never believe he can a main factor for NT standards due to his defensive weaknesses.

Yes the volume of the overall talent was not high but much more important is how high the potential of the best talents was. Last year we saw dominant players like Alp Kerem Yuceturk, Mikail Misha Atakan and both are lost in this season. This is always the reason why we must look after unmature kids. Its not only about big body, the most talented player of the U14 last year was most likely the small PG of Fener Omer Ege Ziyaettin but kid was a real talent, not a mature one like Misha Atakan. Most likely we will see Omer Kutluay, Kaan Belgutay, Omer Alp Elitas, Kartal Bora Simsek in the U16 NT in 2 years. Players like Kaan Belgutay, Omer Alp Elitas can only get better, the combination of skills-raw-big body is always gold.

After your post, i watched the game of Kartal Bora Simsek and he impressed me very much too but Omer Kutluay is different story. Kartal Simsek could be even better from natural feel for game, but Omer Kutluays strengths are just too crazy, he is clearly better as the U14 Furkan Korkmaz-Onuralp Bitim and he is not mature, kid is a crazy talent, only his height is with 185 not perfect. Next year he will most likely play with the 08 team of Efes, he must grow several inches in the next years and then the sky is the limit. I have though some doubts that Kartal Simsek could be a bit mature. And he is born in January, this is not positive. But Kartal Simsek could be a special talent and therefore he must play in Istanbul.

Some action from Kartal Bora Simsek, he is 2 inches bigger as Omer Kutluay.

Last game of Omer Alp Elitas. A perfect prospect. Sometimes non-nomination is not important, he will be not in the U14 NT but last time he was with the team and one of the best players. Yagiz Kilic(with 23 for MG Spor) is in the U14 NT and a talented big, he is a bit a poor Alperen Sengun but just over 190, that will hurt him in the next stages. Omer Alp Elitas is much more interesting.

Buyuktuncel is about to complete a season that can be considered good in terms of quantity but extremely mediocre in terms of quality. Despite his dominant skills that allow him to dominate the ball in the youth categories, he hasn't been able to utilize any of them at the senior level yet. This can be attributed to the decisions made by the two coaches he worked with throughout the season, as well as the influence of his teammates' playing styles. Currently, there is no trace of the kid who used to control the ball, play with his back to the basket, and confidently take mid-range shots. Defense will be Buyuktuncel's greatest asset I don't say the opposite, but being so disregarded in the offense is quite frustrating, especially in a season where he receives a significant amount of playing time. Average team players like Ennis and Gray are unfortunate for developing players like Buyuktuncel. Both guys have way too individual game understanding. In an environment where players who have an impact on the game take offensive responsibilities for the team success, Buyuktuncel would have show his value in the offense as well. It would have been much better for Buyuktuncel to spend the season playing for both Tofas and Akran Gemlik with a dual license. Playing in Akran Gemlik would have provided him with the opportunity to display his offensive abilities and could have saved his team from relegation.

It's not acceptable for Buyuktuncel to only average 4 shot attempts per game in a season where he plays 18 minutes on average. Even Adem Bona, who is primarily played for defense, has averaged nearly 5 shot attempts per game. This is a clear indication of how Buyuktuncel is being overshadowed on offense by his coach and team-mates. If he wants to continue pursuing his dream of playing in the EuroLeague or NBA, he needs to utilize his minutes more evenly in the upcoming season. Buyuktuncel is not just a one-dimensional player who is only on the court for defense. Someone needs to teach Ene this reality. He is a target player for NT and along with Sengun and Bona he will form the backbone of the team.

It is really frustrating. I already gave up on letting him create something. He stays 10 times totally open per game and Gray takes 100 contested shots. It definitely got worse with Ene who plays him very limited minutes on three and misuses him as screen setter on five. I would even be happy if he showed that he can make some open shots.

I wanted to write a bit about kaan onat, I've read some of the comments here about him and I definitely can say that he's a really big talent but I feel like he's not going to play as a guard in the future if he wants to succeed at EL level basketball, his ball handling is a huge problem he averaged like 5 turnovers a game because of his handling although he has great court vision and can play the pnr. I think he's going to turn into a 3 once he finishes growing he'll probably end up being 2,02-2,03 so he probably will have the ideal physique for it too. He should study joe Ingles his game I think he can become a similar type of player in the future but we'll see

Of course Alperen Sengun would be on a different level with athleticism, but even with this athleticism he is a NBA player, many turks have claimed that Alperen is a second Ahmetcan Duran. Same with Kaan Onat but this will not stop Kaan Onat to become a great prospect. Kaan is like Alperen Sengun to clever that this handicap can stop him. Kaan is a special prospect, no doubt about it. Even in this final game he came and had directly very positive impact for Efes despite he was by far the youngest player on the court. He is not a PG, he is a SG/PG. Derin Can Ustun is a PG. David Mutaf will be maybe always too bad in defense but Kaan Onat is different level, kid has not only great IQ in offense, same IQ he has or will have in defense too. Without speed he is beating his opponents in 1v1, only with instincts, with his natural feel. And he is a tremendous scorer, can create from everywhere without any problem, is a very versitale scorer, he even started to post up smaller players. His scoring is much more versatile as Furkan Korkmaz or Onuralp Bitims. And he can create for his teammates. Turkish bb lacks 2 types of players. A real PG with safe ballhandling, creating for teammates and defense and 2nd player is a combo which can create for himself and his teammates(yani Kaan Onat).

Welcome Ibo. Kaan Onat has a good handling. He had his tournovers always against older competition, he has very less experience with the BGL team of Efes or with Efes team for ANGT, his young age and experience was the reason for to. He has at this stage for U16 no problems handling the ball. And he will have always the advantage of his cleverness and instincts, this helps a lot at handling the ball. But again like you say it too, he is not a PG. One of the biggest problems in turkish bb is to handle players in 1 way. You cant expect the same PG performance from Kaan Onat like from Derin Can Ustun. Kaan Onat is most likely 192-3, not 195 like in ANGT, compare him to Melih Tunca, Melih is 195-6(Melih is not 193 like in ANGT). Furkan Korkmaz was with 15 193, Onuralp Bitim with 16 193, Okben Ulubay was with 16 already almost 200, Tibet Gorener was a unmature kid with 16 and 200 and is at best now 202-3. Official measurements from Adidas Eurocamp Kenan Sipahi 196,5, Berkan Durmaz 202, Metecan Birsen 203,5 etc. etc. etc. People said 2-3 years ago that Adem Bona is 206 and will be 210 bla bla bla and now what is the result, he is 203,5...For example im pretty sure Berke Buyuktuncel is something like 205 because you must always compare players to others in games and he had many team photos in NT next to Furkan Haltali, Sadik Kabaca(both are 205-6, at best Sadik 207, more 206)...All in all its not very possible that 16 years old Kaan Onat can add 10 cm in the next years but a 196-198 Kaan Onat with his wide body, long arms and cleverness would not have huge problems playing some SF. Im always talking about heights without shoes. Maybe Ozan Yilmaz(03) could help immediately a first division team for 7mpg and Melih Tunca cant do this at this stage. But if you give Melih Tunca time and let him come step by step he could grow into a great player. And exactly this plan/chance is not given to turkish players. Melih Tunca has like the young Furkan Korkmaz or Omer Kutluay a perfect body structure and should not have problems to build a great body. Its more about mentality as about weight, even in the final Melih Tunca didnt play any defense. On the other side, Omer Kutluay was maybe the thinnest player in the final but no one could stop his drives. Most of the turkish players are too soft.

Disgusting situation for Berke Buyuktuncel but we know this situations well enough from turkish bb. Every turkish player was in these or often in worst situation. We must show the same reactions for other turkish players too. This will never change if the importance of the turkish players will not increase. This must be the goal of TBF and fans. Teams must have a plan for turkish players. Second division is the best place for young players, from Cedi Osman, to Banvit-players, Bugrahan Tuncer, other players and now Goktug Bas.

I watched the U-16 German Championship semifinals, and Kenan Reinhart finished the game with 16 points, despite a poor shooting performance. As I mentioned, he is not a spectacular prospect, but if he were part of our U-16 national team, he could have been one of the 2-3 most valuable players after the trio of Onat, Ustun, and Nurveren. He seems to have the potential to develop both physically and in terms of fundamental skills. In the game I watched, his shots didn't go in, but he showed signs of being a quality player from his shooting form to shot selection. Not shying away from contact and not hesitating when finding driving lanes are positives for him at the moment. As he gets stronger, the value of these skills will be better appreciated. As I mentioned before, this kid has an interest in playing for the Turkish NT, but I think we will see him in the U-16 German NT this summer. It's still worth keeping an eye on this kid's development. He can reach a different level within 2-3 years. I have high hopes for him.

If the positive scenario I mentioned above unfolds, it may be necessary to make the right move and give him the opportunity to wear the Turkish NT jersey.

Hello all,

I am new here in the forum.

Since I'm having problems accessing the TBF site, I wanted to ask you if you could tell me anything about the squads of the youth national teams.

Do you have a list of the nominations? (U16, U18, U19 and U20)

How do you rate the chances of success of the respective teams?

Hi guys! Thank you for your articles about Turkish prospects. I also share Turkish young players on Twitter, maybe you've seen it. What do you think about the U18 candidate squad, how do you think the 12-man squad will be?

I am curious about Goktug Bas' performance in the upcoming season mostly. He continues to deliver magnificent performances. His ability to stay active in the game without forcing the game too much, his right shot selections and his adequate athletic attributes will most probably make him a highly productive role player even for top-level teams. It is crucial for him to spend the upcoming season in a team where he can get as much playing time as possible. Hopefully, Samsunspor will be promoted to the higher league, and Bas will be able to continue receiving significant minutes in BSL aswell. Since I last wrote about him, Bas' two-point shooting percentage has even further increased. Currently, his 2 FGP is 79.6%, and get ready for this: when considering the first and second leagues of major basketball countries in Europe (France, Italy, Greece, Germany, Lithuania, Spain Turkey, ABA League, VTB League), he has the highest percentage among players who have attempted at least 100 two-point shots.

Highest 2-FGPs in first and second leagues of major basketball countries:

- Goktug Bas - 153-192 2FG - 79,6%
- Lauryntas Birutis - 158-204 2FG - 77,5%
- Tryggvi Hlinason - 97-124 2FG - 78,2%
- Youssoupha Fall - 159-202 2FG - 78,7%

Of course, one should not read too much into this statistic, but still, Bas' ability to efficiently using of the ball in an environment where he cannot establish physical dominance indicates his feel for the game. There is improvement in all aspects of his game, including three-point shooting. It is crucial for him to keep on his development and make proper career planning to compete his transition to higher level basketball.

It might be bold statement since these are still kids but Kartal Bora Simsek reminded me De Colo.

UCLA's Adem Bona will withdraw his name from the 2023 NBA draft and return to school for his sophomore season.
