Turkish Prospects

Good news, as expected he is returning in the second half of the season. As far as I know few Turkish clubs offered minor roles to him and looks like he found a team that offered him a major role. He needs match tempo to regain his assets for sure and ABA League, Eurocup (His team is going to be eliminated most probably in group stage but never mind he may see few games in Eurocup level) and Slovenian local league games waiting for him. He will be warming up, good opportunity to be ready for the next season.

He is not a youngster anymore, already lost a lot of time because of injuries, but I trust this guy's talent. He will hopefully convince people that he can take the driver seat of elite teams.

First I want him to stay healthy. He will need time to overcome his fear getting injured again. As you said Slovenian league plus few minutes in Eurocup as well as in the ABA league is enough for now. The final conclusion can be made next season.

I also trust his talent but i need to see his mental and physical status.

2023 PG DERIN SARAN CONTINUES TO REEL IN OFFERS
Dan Gibbs — Contributing Editor - NY2LASPORTS.COM

It has been a big couple of weeks for Derin Saran as he continues to reel in the scholarship offers. The 6’4” senior point guard of the Asheville School (NC) and Team 1 of 1 Elite has added four offers from division one programs recently.

In the past couple of weeks, LIU Brooklyn, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and Wyoming have all offered Saran who is one of the 2023-point guards left available in the nation. These four are added to a list of offers that also included Binghamton, Campbell, Colgate, Denver, Elon, Northeastern, Quinnipiac, Stony Brook, USC Upstate, UT Chattanooga, Winthrop, and others.

“I’m grateful for all of my offers. It’s been an exciting and fun process, learning about different programs and conference,” Saran said about the current status of his recruitment. Saran considered committing and signing during the November early signing period but ultimately decided to wait it out and it has paid off the with the additional offers. The point guard is having a standout senior season to finish out his high school career with 20.1 points, 8.5 assists, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.3 steals per game to lead Asheville School to a 16-5 record currently.

Following the high school season Saran is looking to take his official visits and then making his commitment following them in March or April.

Why he didn't play for U16 this summer? Seems interesting. A bit clumsy handles, but seems very creative, pretty shifty and terrific vision.

He is 2004 born and couldnt have played in the U16 but in the U18 team. Derin Saran was 2 years ago like 171cm and very skinny. He was always talented but physically not ready. He had a burst of growth of over 20 cm in 1,5 years it seems and has been having a great season with his team with over 20 points average.

The problem with our 2004 generation is there are too many talented players. There is maybe no outstanding talent but many guys who could turn out to be very good in the future with hard work so its really difficult to select the right ones but Derin Saran has surely a spot in the U19 FIBA WC team this summer. Maybe also in the U20 team.

Watched more highlights. Very very talented. And plays differently than usual Turkish player. High IQ, fundamentally sound. Feels like Spanish, Serbian, Slovenian kinda guard prospect. Your best guard prospect by far:

We always have to consider the level of competition as well. He looks promising but we can just be sure of his current level after seeing them playing in higher competitions like EC

Oh, yeah, I've messed up 2004 with 2006 :) Then it's a little bit different perspective indeed. I thought I see 16yo. But still the skillset, feel for the game, IQ, vision is all there. Depends now what's the level of his physicality, but he has very good first step, acceleration, shiftness. If he won't lose that with bulking for PROs, he will be a player.

ESPN released the 2024 mock draft and B?y?ktuncel is in the late second round. It is possibility that Adem get selected in 2023, Berke in 2024 and maybe Demir in 2025. I do not know his current shape. And we have some guys with NBA upside in 2007 generation. We can see more Turkish guys in NBA in the future.

The main success criterion for reasonable basketball countries should be having 10 NBA draftees in 10 years period. First rounder or second rounder, that doesn't matter much. Some of them will play in NBA, some of them will play in Euroleague normally. Thus, having at least 10 players who are high level basketball stagers will lead you to stay competitive in basketball arena.

We must aim having that number of NBA players. I take this idea much further, this must be the written mission of federation in the medium term. When we achieve this, we can count ourselves as a serious contender for tournaments.

10 players in 10 years mission is hard to achieve when we look at our talent pool. Still, it is all about to reveal the real potential of this country. Basketball needs to be revived in Adana, Ankara and Eastern regions. We can only talk about the NBA possibilities of '03-'06 generation range and from this span, only Bona is a sure pick. Mediocre outcome.

There is a substantial amount of money in Turkish basketball. That should be spent wisely. We can do better. We can introduce more youth to basketball. We can provide better facilities for them to utilize. We are seriously a sleeping giant, sadly.

I dont agree with the idea "the more NBA player the better". European top player are more all around players than some specialists from NBA teams. With other words I would rather would like to have a Euroleague decision making star than a shooting specialist. Look at Cedi or Furk. Furk has 0 trade value and is trapped in Philadelphia at least as long as he doesnt reject the money. If he stayed in Europe he would probably have a leading role in a Euroleague team. We have no backcourt who could finish a game. The recipe for success is a good mix of Euroleague and NBA players. They are high level player anyway but the difference is the role they inherit.

What we lack is not the number of NBA players its the lack of number of Turkish players in the Euroleague but you are right. We have potential to be better at developing players.

10 drafted players in 10 years is hard to achieve. F.e. since 2013 Spain failed to draft 10 players. I think only Serbia and France did it, they drafted around 14-18 players. Most of them, specially French, didn't make impact to the NT. Lithuania, assuming in 2023 Tubelis will be drafted, got 7 drafted players, but likely Gudaitis, Kulboka will make little to none impact.

I think it's a lottery. It's more about quality, not quantity. Also about player's adjustment to FIBA BB. F.e. France is drafting tons of players, but Wemby alone can be worthy more than 12-14 drafted prospects. Recently France lacking players who would truly upgrade their NT. Serbia for example in 2014 drafted Bogdanovic, Jokic and Micic and they are good for the decade. Or, say, Slovenia got Doncic and he changed their face entirely. Lithuania f.e. got 2 lottery picks in 5 years span, but they didn't change our BB culture, couldn't even sustain the previous level cause the translation to FIBA is rather poor. If some-one would offer me Manu Gin?bili type of prospect for both JV and Domas I wouldn't hesitate for a minute. I think it's more about finding true gems, specially perimeter gems.

Not even mentioning that Diamantidis, Jasikevicius, Teodosic were not drafted...

Akay will start balling in Ljubljana by March. 10-15 pro games is enough for him to be prepared for next season. He has been practicing with team for a month and he is supposed to be ready for starting to play at least light minutes.
