Not true.Hope this will change because of the WC 06.
Tavli is backgammon,a very popular "sport" played allover the country in cafe's and homes.
which city are you in ? maybe you are in a small vellage , its in 21 century now , go to athens , my friends are all in athens and in big city in hellas , :)

if you like soccer , go out , or i will not come to this forum any more ,

I lived in Athens 1997-2005.If your friends have noticed there is a growing munber of 5x5 football fields that are packed with people who actually make appointments and rent the place by the hour.In the meantime I would see many empty bball courts and I whenever I wanted to play I had to go 5-6km from home to find a court which had spotlights, plastic surface and decent players. Most of the courts are in school yards with bent rims,no lines, and cement surface on which countless players have got injured. The normal gyms are off limits and used by clubs for trainings.
In my hometown Lamia (pop. 70000), in the bball court where the best streetballers used to go,10 yrs ago there used to be about 25-30 people. On my leave, about a month ago, I went there to play and usually there werent more than 15.
I like playing and watching bball better than football but most Greeks dont have the same opinion.

In haiti is
1-soccer
2-soccer
3-soccer
4-soccer
5-soccer
6-soccer
7-Maybe soccer
8- they don't know
9- they don't care

I'm the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (NOT DOMINICA BUT THE OTHER ONE NEXT TO HAITI) though is quite different

1TH IS BASKETBALL
2TH BASEBALL
3TH vOLEYBALL
4TH BOXING
5TH SWIMMING
6TH MARTIAL ARTS
7TH TRACK AND FIELD
8TH RACING SPORTS
9TH PING PONG
10TH WEIGHT
11TH MAYBE SOCCER BUT I THINK IS AMERICAN FUTBALL OR HANDBALL

The only countries where i guess basketball is the main sport are Lithuania, Philippinnes and Angola.
In Dominican republic it's baseball, no doubt about it.

Well, wasn't talking about the most practiced but the most popular sport. I have not lived in dominican rep but have some relatives from there and that was my impression.
For example in Spain there are much more people who practice 5x5 soccer than 11x11 soccer but that doesn't mean 5x5 is more popular.
By the way, in China as someone told before, the most popular as well as the most practiced is table tennis.

I live in US and never heard of handball being played anywhere.

Do you mean Dodgeball?
I guess he mean football (not european football :p ) otherwise it's nonsense.

5x5 soccer and 11x11 soccer are the same sport. while basketball and baseball are not. I thought u were talking about the most practice though. but let me tell u this "there are places in the dominican where baseball in not even in the top 5, some cities like: La vega (soccer is the most popular nad most parctice) Santiago(basketball is the most popular -although in this city in particicular the do like baseball-) santioago rodrigues(basketball)mote plata(voleyball), puerto plata(surfing and water sports) samana(surfing and water sports), Moca (soccer)

this is just like u said PENZIAS nonsence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
in NEW YORK THE MOST POPULAR SPORT ARE:
1 - BASEBALL
2 - FUTBALL
3 - BASKETBALL
4 - HOCKEY
5 - LACROSSE
6- SOCCER (NOT AMONG THE AMERICAS THOUGH, BUT BECAUSE OF THE INMIGRATION)

AND dodgeball is still not consider a sport. is more of a game or passtime. for a game to be consider a sport now a days u gotta have an international body to rule the sport worldwide which a set of rules stablished, which dodgeball doesn't have because there are plenty of variation of the games (most of then with no specifict rules, but the ones set before each game between the player)

Soccer...do u mean Football.....yeah it sucks............................22 stupid men running after one BALL......................................infact it is 25 men running after one BALL...

Basketball RULZZZZZZZZZ

in the Philippines:

teamsports

1. basketball
2. volleyball - all forms, but the most popular is beach volleyball
3. football -- but only in certain areas like in the southern part of the country

individual sports

1. billiards or pool
2. badminton
3. martial arts - .especially among the richer ones, and this includes boxing, mixed martial arts, muay, taekwondo and karate.

we are also big in recreational swimming..but not much in competetive swimming

In France,

most licenciates are:

football(soccer)
I don't remember, but I would go for cyclism(rugby maybe, but would surprise me as it is only very popular in southwest).
basketball
petanque(don't know how to translate, but everybody plays that on holidays here^^)

In Turkey the case is sadly:
1.Soccer
2.Soccer
3.and more soccer

Basketball comes after soccer. There is no other sport as popular as these two. Maybe volleyball, tough I do not hear news about it often. :(

ı agree with him:D :D
