Polling company Kappa Research did a study for newspapers Vima about the football World Cup and one of the questions they asked was "What sport do you like watching?"

The responses were (respondents could pick more than one sport):

- Football 77.6%
- Basketball 75.5%
- Tennis 28.7 %
- Volleyball 28.4%
- Water polo 7.8%
- Rugby (!) 4.2%

That's quite interesting. Basketball is just as popular as football apparently. I doubt this happens in many countries.

Interesting. Might be that people like watching basketball, however they just like watching football more, but anyway I do have a strong feeling perception of bball's popularity is neglected from time to time.

Strange research.Seems like the question was more like if you were sitting on your couch havin nothin better to do which sports would you watch?
No way basketball is as popular as football. In fact the sport's popularity is on a steady decline since late 90s.Just look at the recent u20 championship in crete.Stands were empty and it seemed like the only fans in attendance were player's parents.

Internet audience are mostly under 45. Football is much more popular above that age.
And it doesn't say what sport people liked more. It says which sport people like to watch.

As Victorious mentioned above since this study was done online the majority of the participants would definitely be from the younger generations where basketball is as popular as football...

As for rugby one main reason would be the influence of Greek-Australians (since rugby is huge in Australia) who mostly visit Greece during the summer and they happened to see this poll and voted :p

Note: There is a rugby league in Greece by the way and I remember that PAO assembled a team quite recently earlier this year

The survey wasn't done online. It was a phone survey done by Kappa Research. They do political surveys for newspapers such as Vima as well as other media.
Also people could pick more than sport as an answer.
