South Korea National Team 2013-2014

  • Thread starter Thread starter CKR132
  • Start date Start date
Given the performance of both Jang Jae-Seok and Choi Jin-Soo from last month's scrimmages with BYU-Hawaii and Japan plus the recent outings against the Tall Blacks, they are primed to get cut to narrow down the squad to 12 for the world cup.

Cutting Jae-Seok would have no problems with the bigman rotation as Korea has youth and veterans at the post.

While Choi Jin-Soo if he gets cut, would narrow down the SF spot to Moon Tae-Jong, Yang Hee-Jong and Choi Joon-Young. Moon has been playing shooting guard as of late to relieve Cho Sung-Min as Moon has become the team's primary sixth man.

The team will fly back to South Korea tomorrow. It is reported that Yoo Jae-Hak will name his 12 man squad in August 1.

Korea has the following schedule for practice back at home. They are still negotiating some scrimmages in Europe to add to the August schedule.

July 25 Chinese Taipei national team (Yonggi Gym Ulsan)
July 27 Chinese Taipei national team (LG Practice Gym Seoul)
July 29 New Zealand Tall Blacks (Student Gymnasium Seoul)
July 31 New Zealand Tall Blacks (Student Gymnasium Seoul)

Ha Seung-Jin, Kim Tae-Sol and Heo Il-Young will rejoin the team. In exchange, Yoo Jae-Hak cut Lee Seung-Hyun, Choi Joon-Young, Choi Jin-Soo and Jang Jae-Seok.

The current squad is now down to 13:

Guards
Yang Dong-Geun (Ulsan Mobis Phoebus)
Kim Sun-Hyung (Seoul SK Knights)
Park Chan-Hee (Anyang KGC)
Kim Tae-Sol (Jeonju KCC Egis)

Wings
Cho Sung-Min (Busan Sonicboom KT)
Moon Tae-Jong (Changwon LG Sakers)
Heo Il-Young (Goyang Orions)
Yang Hee-Jong (Anyang KGC)

Post
Lee Jong-Hyun (Korea University)
Kim Jong-Kyu (Changwon LG Sakers)
Kim Joo-Sung (Wonju Dongbu Promy)
Oh Se-Keun (Anyang KGC)
Ha Seung-Jin (Jeonju KCC Egis)

To achieve the 12 man squad, Yoo Jae-Hak will need to cut a spare guard or a spare bigman.

Team age got old in an instant as veterans were plugged in. Unlike last year that featured five amateurs in the FIBA Asia held Manila, this time around, Lee Jong-Hyun is the last amateur playing with a veteran team.

Adding these veterans means Korea wants to win gold in the Asian games.

its no longer possible. it is already july 23. Korea already has plan for the rest of the week and Gilas will be flying out of the country by August 1.

Looks like Ha Seung-Jin's training with the national team will be cut short as he is not 100% due to a hip injury over a month ago while working out. Yoo Jae-Hak admitted that despite Seung-Jin losing a lot of weight, the latter had no basketball activity and lacks conditioning during his two years away with the armed forces / public service.

South Korea wins the first friendly against Chinese Taipei 102-66.

Cho Sung-Min 17pts
Kim Sun-Hyung 15pts
Moon Tae-Jong 14pts
Yang Dong-Geun 12pts

Korea looked strong when their starters were playing but the second unit with exception to Kim Sun-Hyung did had a lot of defensive lapses. Quincy Davis helped control the tempo in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. 4th quarter, Chinese Taipei played the bench players while Korea fielded most of their starters.

South Korea 103 - 70 Chinese Taipei

After the 2nd quarter, Chinese Taipei was not interested in winning the game, but trying out combinations and experimenting on plays. Result was Korea winning handily after a close first half where Chinese Taipei was up 21-19.

Kim Tae-Sol looks healthy and fit enough to play for the national team, although he admitted that he is not 100%. Ha Seung-Jin is not playing and will most likely be dropped without a practice game. Heo Il-Young is also not 100% after a nasal fracture. Korea has 11 players active while Kim Joo-Sung has a strained bicep but will be available for the New Zealand scrimmage tomorrow.

South Korea vs. New Zealand Tall Blacks later. Kim Joo-Sung and Heo Il-Young have it at 50-50% chance to play depending on their respective injuries.
