South Korea National Team 2013-2014

Head coach Choi Bo-Young stated that he sees China and Chinese Taipei as contenders for Gold.

Team captain Yoon Ho-Young for the East Asian games will be replaced due to ankle ligament damage sustained from months of playing. No replacement has been named as of yet as the KBA is looking for a replacement within the last minute.

Unfortunate, since the start of the East Asian games is just two days away. Rumor has it that a college player is being eyed as a replacement.

I am hoping that the KBA will tap Korea University's Kang Sang-Jae, who was the best player for this year's U19 team (19.2 ppg). Kang plays for Korea University so, he will mesh well with KU guys. Kang is 6'8 and plays SF but could be tapped as PF if needed.

It is announced that South Korea will not replace injured team captain Yoon Ho-Young and instead will send an eleven (11) man team to the East Asian Games.

Depth Chart:

PG - Park Chan-Hee / Park Jae-Hyun
SG - Kim Min-Goo / Doo Kyun-Min
SF - Lee Jung-Hyun / Moon Seung-Gon
PF - Lee Seung-Hyun / Choi Joon-Young
C - Kim Jong-Kyu / Lee Jong-Hyun / Kim Jun-Il

Expect Korea to bounce back against Mongolia. Guards like Park Chan-Hee and Park Jae-Hyun were missing layups against Taiwan, but then again, Quincy Davis and Tseng Wen-Ting were guarding the lane.

Arirang TV will also broadcast this documentary about Korea's Legacy of Basketball. Second basketball documentary produced this year.

Reforms had been proposed for the national team and a model similar to the USA Basketball is being discussed for implementation.

1. A head coach for a defined interval of international competition as opposed to a new coach every year.
2. Yearly summer camps for upcoming young talents in the national team pool.
3. A committee for selecting players as opposed to the head coach calling the shots for a group of players.
4. Expanding the player pool from 24 to 36.

South Korea now tied with Panama at #31 for the FIBA men's world rankings.

Good read: A comparison of Hur Jae's sons. Hur is a legend within Korea's basketball and is currently the coach of Jeonju KCC Egis that is currently mentoring Kim Min-Goo, said to be Korea's next star guard.

http://sports.media.daum.net/today/all/view.html?cateid=1004&newsid=20131112075108249&p=jumpball

I like Hur Ung over Hur Hoon given that Hur is a bigger shooting guard and is much more suited at SG than SF. Hoon has been a shooting guard since his HS days but has been learning to play PG and has made strides with it. Both have FIBA experience in regards with their age brackets.

Kim Joo-Sung stated today that he may forego his spot with the national team in Spain next year if he is not healthy. Kim said that he would rather have a healthy player representing Korea compared to being a hindrance to the team or occupying a roster spot despite not playing.

It seems the KBA are not keen on a naturalized player for long term as opposed to the news media that suggests that beyond Lee Seung-Jun, Korea needs a naturalized player to compete. KBA are on the right track, develop Korean talents and be competitive. The youth movement had a good success so far.

Naturalized player Lee Seung-Jun can be offset with Kim Jong-Kyu and Lee Jong-Hyun; who are looking to replace Kim Joo-Sung in the fold. It would be tough to replace Yang Dong-Geun. Currently, Kim Sun-Hyung & Park Chan-Hee are able but are not yet tested to being leaders of a national team.

In watching the current KBL season, the national team will be hard pressed to replace Yang Dong-Geun, the fiery leader and the main point for so many years now. Yang took over from Kim Seung-Hyun. Now as Yang is entering his early 30's. Yang's backup point in Manila, Kim Tae-Sol is also 30. Some time after the 2014 Asian games, they have to find a successor.

From the ranks:

Kim Sun-Hyung
Park Chan-Hee

Both are waiting in line. Kim was with the team in Manila and impressed with his efficiency and energy in a reserve role. Kim's SK Knights are currently #1 in the KBL right now. Park Chan-Hee was cut after the Jones Cup as Yoo Jae-Hak wanted more scoring in the wings. Park has the versatility and is a pass first point guard compared to Kim.

Kim Si-Rae
Park Jae-Hyun
Doo Kyun-Min

Kim is on his way to becoming an all-star this season with LG. Last season, he was under the guidance of Yang Dong-Geun. Given his own team, he has done a good job in spearheading the Sakers fastbreak. Though Kim is relatively untested when it comes to FIBA play. Park Jae-Hyun another upcoming guard with Samsung that showcases versatility and playmaking. Doo Kyun-Min surprised us all as he can play point guard despite being known as a shooter in his college days with Kyung-Hee. Doo and Park have senior's experience on their belts with the 2013 EABC and East Asian games.

Changwon LG Sakers head coach and former national team head coach Kim Jin, stated that Kim Jong-Kyu will lead South Korea's next generation, much like the progression of veteran Kim Joo-Sung.

Yoon Ho-Young version II Chang Min-Kug of KCC Egis. Yoon is turning 30 next year but the national team's SF is locked up currently with college stars like Yonsei's Choi Joon-Young and KU's Moon Seung-Gon. Chang Min-Kug is Kim Min-Goo's teammate and Hur Jae insisted that Chang Min-Kug can play for the national team.

Both Kim Min-Goo and Chang Min-Kug are being mentored by former national team players Kang Byung-Hyun and Kim Hyo-Beom.

From Kyung-Hee to the KBL and next year the world stage. Kim Jong-Kyu and Kim Min-Goo are up for big things. (You can also add Doo Kyun-Min as a sub for PG if Kim Tae-Sol is not healthy.)
Future of Korea is showcased here.

KBL's rookie all stars against the top players of the KUBL.

Yes, a healthy Lee Seung-Jun and Kim Joo-Sung does wonders for Wonju. Yoo Jae-Hak found that out with the national team. Both have been healthy to start the season but injuries do takes it toll on both veterans.

Currently, Lee Seung-Jun is off the bench to save him for the long run.

Players like Lee Seung-Jun, Kim Sun-Hyung, Yang Dong-Geun and Kim Tae-Sol got standing ovation for playing in FIBA Asia.

To no surprise, Yoo Jae-Hak is still the national team coach for the 2014 World Cup and the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

Yoo Jae-Hak stated that they were fortunate that despite the lack of friendlies aside from the Jones Cup that the team qualified to the world cup. Yoo Jae Hak even recounted that they paid for foreign players to practice defensive and offensive sets.

This time around, Yoo Jae-Hak stated that a friendly match against New Zealand and potentially, Mexico and Egypt are lined up. Coach Yoo added that their focus is having a respectable showing in the world cup and winning gold in the Asian games.

Surrounding the speculation of a new naturalized player, Yoo stated that they do not have the convenience of time where a selection process as well as the procedures does not fit the time frame. Then he praised Lee Seung-Jun and Moon Tae-Young.

Tentative timeline schedule:

April - May = Initial training
May - June = Abroad training / exhibition games
June - July = Training in Olympic village
July - August - September = International friendlies / actual competition

Showing this weekend on SBS - ESPN and Arirang Sports TV, a recap of the 2013 Korea Basketball

KCC's rookie star, Kim Min-Goo stated in YNTnews that he would like to see teammate Chang Min-Kug in the pool this year and someday be teammates with him with the national team. Kim also added that players like Kang Byung-Hyun and the soon to return Ha Seung-Jin should be considered still as they are veterans.

------------------------------------------------------------------

For Chang Min-Kug, it is possible to see his name in the pool and perhaps someday suit up for the national team. Yoon Ho-Young will be 30 and Chang's skillset is similar to Yoon where they can both play SF and PF. Chang has the range and wingspan to play perimeter defense. Kim Min-Goo can do it all and aside from his shooting, he can find teammates on transition.

Both Kim and Chang thrives in KCC's uptempo offense since Ha Seung-Jin is not around and it forces Hur Jae to play faster and push the pressure before the defense settles. Kang and Ha may no longer be considered for the final twelve as the depth of the young ones like Choi Joon-Young, Choi Jin-Soo are mainstays at SF. Kang as SG, can be tapped but Kim Min-Goo and Cho Sung-Min are already steady there.

Same case with Ha Seung-Jin where the rapid development of Kim Jong-Kyu, Lee Jong-Hyun and Jang Jae-Seok are being monitored closely by the KBA.
