ALASKA on Monday clarified that its starting center Sonny Thoss can only join Gilas Pilipinas' weekly practices as an observer, insisting the set-up has the appoval of PBA commissioner Chito Salud.

Just hours after Gilas coach Chot Reyes tweeted that Thoss has been given the green light to attend the Monday practices, Alaska team manager Dickie Bachmann clarified the Aces' starting center was only allowed to go to the once-a-week sessions but is barred from joining the training.

“He can observe, but he cannot play,” said when reached by Spin.ph. “That’s our agreement with the PBA and Gilas."

Bachmann also reiterated that the set-up was approved by Salud by way of a memo which was written even before Reyes made the selections for his 17-man pool public.

Alaska also furnished Spin.ph an official statement from team owner Wilfred Uytengsu, Jr. who finally broke his silence on the matter two days after reports came out that the organization is barring its starting slotman from joining until after the end of its Commissioner's Cup campaign.

“In our case, we made it clear to Commissioner Salud that we would make any of our players chosen to the national pool (available) when Alaska was eliminated from the current second conference,” said Uytengsu, adding the request was "concurred by the PBA chief."

Bachmann, for his part, claimed that Salud had come out with a memo stating that “Thoss can only join Gilas practice after Alaska’s campaign in the ongoing Commissioner’s Cup."

"We have the PBA memo, he (Salud) agreed to it. He understood it. We are just following what was committed to us”, said Bachmann, adding he was puzzled why the agreement was not made public before and after Chot Reyes revealed the members of his Fiba-Asia pool.

"As far as I we know, it was communicated. You have to ask commish why the delay."

Asked why they made the request to excuse Thoss from joining the weekly practices, Bachmann said they didn't want their top big man to lose focus on the team's title aspirations.

“Sonny has been with Gilas for how many conferences now, it’s human nature, he might get tired also. He wants to play, but human nature, he’s gonna bog down. That’s our only concern,” said Bachmann of the slotman, who averages 38 minutes per game for the Aces.

Uytengsu said the pro league has made plenty of sacrifices for the national team by altering the schedule of the season-ending Governors Cup to give Gilas ample time to prepare for the Fiba-Asia Championships which the country will host from August 1-11.

“At the very least, the entire team (Gilas) will be together for two months and maybe more. That’s what was requested. That's what was committed," added Uytengsu.

Asked if Alaska is not concerned about being pictured as a villain in the controversy, Bachmann said: “In the past, Alaska was always there to support the RP team."

Uytengsu also reiterated that Alaska has made a lot of sacrifices for flag and country in the past, especially during the time of the 1998 Centennial Team handled by then Alaska coach Tim Cone.

“The Alaska franchise has frequently stepped up to answer the call of the country in international competition,” he said. “In 1998, Alaska gave up the bulk of its team and its coaching staff to support the Asian Games bid and forwent a possible second Grand Slam after having won the first two conferences in 1998.”

WSU's way of telling everyone: "STFU guys, we already did our part 15 years ago. We're no longer obligated to help this time, but ok, we'll have Sonny available to you after our 2nd Conference stint."

What an attitude! By history ,just how big Alaska's contribution to the national team compared to San Miguel and Smart Group? I did not realize that PBA teams owe it more to themselves than the PBA fans who are clamoring for the best preparation in this FIBA-Asia.

I say this is a ridiculous favor given to Alaska by the commissioner. Because it was done unfairly with other PBA teams as the victim, as all of them are just equally in contention this conference.

I believe the solution is just to let go Sonny Thoss, and just get another big man from the cadet pool or other PBA teams willing to lend another player.

Chot can just get rabeh or jayr reyes if he wants another big body during practice...or even the extra rice boys since they're available...

based on the Chot's tweets .... its only ROS and Global willing to release more than 1 player aside from TNT. Even if he wants to, he knows it is unlikely the SMC Group to loan other players outside of Fajardo, Tenorio and Pingris. And Beau Belga was offered by ROS.

but i think its not an issue anymore. thoss was already cleared by the aces management to join the practice just like the others.

the issue here is why salud agreed to such terms and if the other governors or members of the board knows about this special arrangement.

Then reading also past interviews of Chot, the back-up Center position will be a toss-up between Slaughter and Fajardo. Knowing Reyes, he chosen Thoss as a contingency in case both Greg and JuneMar does not live-up to his expectation as Douthit's reliever. And for that matter Alaska and Uytengsu himself has this feeling too, so if that's Thoss purpose is that and the likeliness of him being part of the Final 12 is slim, why risk him getting fatigued or the probability of injury while they have a chance for the 2nd Conference Title, plus they feel that by already agreeing to release Sonny after the 2nd Conference and to be at the once a week practices as an "observer" is good enough due to their past assistance to the National Cause. I do feel Chot has no problem with the arrangement Alaska had with Commissioner Salud, that is why Chot is very much insistent on having closed door practices, he does not want further distractions. If there are said side arrangements or problems, he wants it handled so discretely that he thinks MVP should not be bothered of such small things anymore as it should be handled already within their level.

Having just 16 instead of 17 players is still manageable .... actually there are only 15 who did the physical activities of the practice as Greg Slaughter and Jeff Chan are injured.

Any from the cadet pool Nardy? I thought about Yancy De Ocampo, he bulked up good lately and is playing solid for Tim Cone. But well...he also is from the SMC umbrella.

I just thought to let go of Thoss, as one, this would be a big slap on the face of Uytengsu and further expose his selfishness, secondly, it is best to find a replacement now while we are on the early stage of preparation.

Yes Thoss was allowed to join the practices but only to "observe" as he is not allowed to join the scrimmages and maybe also the drills.
