I wonder how the public would react if MVP go the AZKAL way wherein even if we are looking at homegrown talents and is considering PBA Reinforcements, they'll go and recruit more overseas based players who are currently unknown but have the physical attributes that are more of international standards. This way we would have Point Guards who are 6'3 or 6'4 in height and wingmen who are 6'5 to 6'7 in height. They would compose the core that would be built around Marcus Douthit. It would also make the National Team not that dependent on the PBA, D-League, UAAP, NCAA, CESAFI, etc.

They'll just have the players from the local leagues be fillers on the remaining slots for the National Team. "Amateur" players with only the likes of Greg Slaughter, JuneMar Fajardo, Aldrech Ramos and Ray Parks are to be considered. And then from the PBA the GILAS Alumni plus the likes of Japeth Aguilar, Gabe Norwood, Jay Washington, Jared Dillinger, Sonny Thoss and Joe DeVance are options.

If you look at the AZKALS there is really a large number of players that are of the pool of players who are actually either part Filipino or is based overseas.

MVP could have this foreign-based Filipinos gathered then offered contracts. Like the original SMART Gilas make them practice, train and play as a team overseas.

If i am not mistaken that was the plan for Gilas 1.0.

Look what happened. Without doing anything ("sacrifice" is the word for most), the PBA benefited from the program.

The same thing is going to happen if you repeat it again because of the simple fact that the NT needs the pro league.

MANILA, Philippines - Crippled by injuries, Meralco leaned heavily on defense to top Shopinas.com, 79-72, in the 2011-12 PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last night.

The Bolts dragged the Clickers in a tough defensive battle, coming up with crucial stops and putting in enough points to break into the win-column after losing their season debut against the Talk n Text Tropang Texters last Friday.

“We knew it’s going to be an ugly game because we intended to make it hard for them to score in the hope of putting us in a position to win,” said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio.

“I was really hoping that this conference would be a great trial conference for us if Sol Mercado and Macmac Cardona can play together. But what happened was that they got injured together. We have to put emphasis on defense without our scorers,” Gregorio added.

Mercado and Cardona are out with a knee injury and a sprained ankle, respectively. Worse, the team is also missing the services of two other key players in Chris Ross and Reynel Hugnatan.

“We’re without four of our best players but it’s not a reason to cry. We’ll find ways to win,” said Gregorio.

Find ways to win Meralco did versus Shopinas through an efficient defense that limited the Clickers to a 32.6-percent shooting and forced them to commit two errors inside the final minute.

Asi Taulava scored on a post-up play and Mark Macapagal buried two free throws in pouncing on the Shopinas crucial turnovers to make it 79-72 with 14.3 seconds left to play.

Taulava finished with 10 rebounds and seven points while Gabby Espinas, Macapagal, Mark Isip and Mark Yee wound up with at least 10 points each as Meralco dealt Shopinas a second loss in as many games.

Paolo Hubalde scored a career-high 21 points to pace the Clickers.

Down by 12 at 69-57, the Clickers employed a full-court pressing defense to rally to within three, 72-75, with 1:06 left to play.

Earlier, Meralco was headed to the halftime break with a good cushion only to fall into a series of errors, enabling Shopinas to score six points in the last 13 seconds.

Coach Tim Cone earned his first win outside the Alaska Milk organization at the expense of Alaska Milk itself.

B-Meg fought back from an early 15-point deficit and, behind three-point bombs by Josh Urbiztondo, beat Alaska at the finish, squeezing out an 81-75 win in the nightcap.

Its good the PBA is coming in but I'm not very optimistic this far with their reputation to put self-serving interests over and above the national interest. We have seen that so many times in the past

Ah the seeds of doubt.

Nevertheless, SBP really has no option but to trust the PBA on this one. Personal/vented interests be damned. After all, beggars can't be choosers.

(Unless of course you want a repeat of the Gilas 1.0 program-- not bad but not good enough.)

My PBA Sixteen:

Castro/Cabagnot/Lee/Casio
Yap/Reyes/Lutz/Dillinger

seriously? Aguilar at center?

Ramon Ang would rather burn in hell than have one of his players suit up for the National Team so you can remove Barroca, Casio, Lassiter, and Lutz from the list... as well as Intal, Cabagnot, Hontiveros, Al-Hussaini, Washington, Santos, David, Maierhofer, Devance, and James Yap. don't also expect Fajardo and Banchero from the ABL since they also play for an SMC-bankrolled team.

big men: Thoss, Jay-R Reyes, Ballesteros

forwards and wing players: Williams, Aguilar, Baracael, de Ocampo, Norwood, Dillinger, Ababou

guards: Ryan Reyes, Mercado, Cardona, Tenorio, Lee, Castro

a pool of 16 players NOT from an SMC team who either have international experience or decent enough to play the FIBA game and still serviceable by 2014. there are several players in the SEA Games pool good enough to play with these guys til 2014. don't forget Tiu and Douthit (if he's still got the legs by then)

Don't forget Alaska (Uytengsu) feels the same way to the NT as well. So by your logic, let's also remove Thoss, Jay-R Reyes, Barracael, Tenorio. Also, Lassie and Casio is with Powerade, they said they wanted to help.

Then again, if there is a MOA between SBP and the PBA... Your paranoia on Ang's plans could take a backseat.

(Unless of course you want a repeat of the Gilas 1.0 program-- not bad but not good enough.)

This rhetoric is from one who has lost all hope for a better grassroots program, one content with the status quo no matter how flawed the current system is. We can do better than that, don't you think?

I agree with most everyone that we need tall and big players for our next national team. Our small players are good, yes, but just on our standards. On an Asian level standard, they're not that effective, simply because they're competing against taller and bigger opposition, especially players from china, iran and jordan. So here's the 16 players from the PBA which I think can compete against the tall and big players of our asian rivals. With Douthit, Slaugher and Fajardo as our possible players on the "5" position, I think we can divide the 16 players from the PBA into 4 players for each 1,2,3 and 4 positions:

"1" = gabe norwood, ryan reyes, paul lee, sol mercado
"2" = chris lutz, marcio lassiter, jared dillinger, james yap
"3" = joe devance, jay washington, ranidel de ocampo, japeth aguilar
"4" = sonny thoss, rabeh al-hussaini, kelly williams, jay-r reyes

I like our final line-up to be like this:

C - Douthit (6-10)
PF - Al-Hussaini (6-7)
SF - Washington (6-7)
SG - Lutz (6-3)
PG - Lee (6-1)

C - Slaughter (6-11)
PF - Thoss (6-7)
SF - Devance (6-7)
SG - Lassiter (6-3)
PG - Parks (6-3)

Frontcourt Backup: Aguilar (6-9)
Backcourt Backup: Norwood (6-5)
