Omri Casspi leads the way for Israel on EuroBasket 2011
Casspi Propels Israel into Eurobasket 2011
It was a bittersweet moment for Kings forward Omri Casspi on the last night of Eurobasket Qualifications. On one hand, he led his Israeli team to a berth in next year’s Eurobasket tournament, on the other, his team lost to rival Montenegro just moments before 79-69.
Even though Israel lost its qualifications finale to Group A winner, Montenegro, Omri still has much to be proud of. He was the youngest player on the team and without a doubt the leader, leading his team in scoring (16.9 ppg) and to inspiring wins against some of the toughest competition in Eurobasket qualifications; a 79-71 win at Italy and a 77-73 win in Israel against Montenegro.
Israel finished qualifications with a 5-3 record and joined 10 European teams already qualified for next year’s Eurobasket tournament in Lithuania, with Spain and Greece being the early favorites.
Omri will look to change a trend of disappointing outcomes this time next year as Israel competes in Eurobasket 2011. With the goal of not only winning the tournament for the first time in Israel history, but also securing a bid to the 2012 Summer Olympics in England.
Omri will now begin to make his way back to the United States to join his teammates in Sacramento for the start of Kings training camp on Tuesday, September 28.
