Sacramento Kings Thread

  • Thread starter Thread starter mayfel2
  • Start date Start date
The Sacramento Kings have waived forward Lawrence Hill and guard Adrian Oliver.

I think the Kings roster will be like this:

C - Cousins
F - Hickson
F - Greene
G - Thornton
G - Evans
6 - Thompson
7 - Fredette
8 - Garcia
9 - Salmons
10 - Honeycutt
11 - Thomas Jr.
12 - Outlaw

Hassan Whiteside will be relegated to the Injury Reserve. Outlaw is making progress with the Kings' system. His surgically repaired wrist is doing great as he has no trouble shooting with it. I expect Outlaw to pick up the role of Chuck Hayes as Outlaw can play power forward.

Same here, I have been very pleased with Fredette. People expected Fredette to just shoot the ball given the possession. So far, Fredette has been showing the ball distribution skills on which are truly underrated for him in that category. Fredette can facilitate, it is just his scoring in BYU was better recognized.

Overall, Fredette should be given the reigns of the point guard. Tyreke Evans should not play point guard and instead, be a two guard. I will also look for Fredette to develop a chemistry with Cousins and Thornton.

I agree. In the ideal world, I consider Reke to be much more of 2-guard who can also create for others as needed (ie, Joe Johnson, Wade, B-Roy in his prime) than a scoring PG (ie, Westbrook, Rose). Reason being, it just seems like when Reke plays 1, he has a tendency to be too much of a ball-stopper w/ everybody else just standing around. I think it could still work, if the Kings actually had some movement and some kind of offensive system other than just 1-on-1 ball all day ... but I think it's safe to say his instinct (and skill-set) is much more 2 than 1. I could be wrong, and maybe he does evolve into a legit 1 (def possible considering he's only 22) ... but I wouldn't hold my breathe.

Which is why I really hope Jimmer can be that Bibby/Steph/Chauncey type of PG (fingers crossed what we've seen in the pre-season carries over to regular season) who can facilitate the offense and score w/out having to dominate the ball. I think that's the ideal situation.

Basically, I think I've almost given up on Tyreke being a consistent 20ppg/7+ asst guy ... but 23/5/5 as a playmaking SG still seems reasonable.

Chuck Hayes was given medical clearance. Earlier this week, the Kings voided the four year $21.3 Million contract by Hayes. It is reported that Hayes is still interested in re-signing with the Kings and also in circulation, the Kings are also interested in signing Hayes.

Reps: Chuck Hayes has no heart issue

The Sacramento Kings have re-signed forward Chuck Hayes to a four year contract worth $22.3 Million after Hayes was cleared by doctors.

The Sacramento Kings roster are healthy going into the season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers. Head coach Paul Westphal stated that the staff had scouted the sets of Mike Brown's plays from the exhibition games against the Los Angeles Clippers. Westphal said that defense will be the key for the game on covering several outlets of ball movement.

Westphal also stated that he plans to start Tyreke Evans and Marcus Thornton at the back court while rookies Jimmer Fredette and Isaiah Thomas Jr. will see minutes off the bench.

I think the starting lineup will be:

Demarcus Cousins
JJ Hickson
John Salmons
Marcus Thornton
Tyreke Evans

Expect Evans to guard Kobe Bryant and exploit a mis-match against the smaller Derek Fisher.

So, we defeat the Lakers 100-91. A great win for us to start off this shortened season, and a bad start for Kobe and co. Tonight, we displayed our great depth, and we also showed we could play good defense down the stretch. Tyreke, Demarcus, and Thornton were all great today. We should giv ethem a nickname :) (or is it to early?). Jimmer also played well, scoring six points and dished some assists. Overall, I loved our performance tonight, we looked the Kings of old. Up next, Portland on the road.

Chuck Hayes also had some solid contributions. 7 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists.

I am glad that the Kings re-signed Hayes.

Defintely, I agree. hayes is one of those players where the effort doesn't show up in the stats but helps with the standings.

Up next is the road game against the Portland Trailblazers. The Trailblazers seems to consistently beat the Sacramento Kings for the last three years with the Blazers winning 9-1 against the Kings.

The only loss came in January 2011 with the Kings pummeling the Blazers at home 96-81. Kings stand a good chance in this one. The key to beating the Trailblazers is collapsing on Lamarcus Aldridge in the defense.

Cousins and Aldridge would be a great match-up if Cousins can stay out of foul trouble. We also have to deal with guards Wesley Matthews, Raymond Felton and Jamal Crawford; who was close to signing with the Kings during training camp.

Evans and Thornton has a big fight ahead.

Highlights of the SAC-LAL game. Plenty of back and forth action between both teams.

SAC 79 POR 101

The Kings shot horrible with a 37.8% clip compared to the Trailblazers with 44.7%. Portland's inside game worked with Aldridge scoring 24 points, Gerald Wallace, a former Kings, got a team high 25 points while Batum with 15 points.

An efficient inside game that the Kings' defense had no answer. Portland utilized post dumps, low cuts and pick and rolls for most of their front court's points. The Kings could not secure second chance points.

Thornton shot poor by going 5-15 in field goals while being 1-5 from beyond the arc. Tyreke Evans did not displayed the aggressiveness against the Lakers by being lethargic and finishing with 4 points on 2-8 shooting.

Demarcus Cousins lead the Kings with a double double game of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Cousins was in foul trouble so his night's production would have been more. The Kings melted in the 3rd quarter as Portland outscored them 28-19 and in the fourth, Kings could only score 14 points and could not go farther than an 85-73 deficit in the final eight minutes.

Evans continues to be a stat player--- all numbers and no W's.

Have you seen how he intentionally missed those free throws in their last game? (Vs. LA) It's pathetic really, he's more into covering lines than getting actual victories.

For the Nth year, the Kings are going to suck again.

Kings get a day off and sort what went wrong. Up next are the Chicago Bulls who are on a Pacific road trip. The Bulls are coming off a loss to the Golden State Warriors.

The game is already sold out in the Power Balance Pavilion thanks to Derrick Rose being in town. Look for Tyreke Evans to guard Rose. Then Westphal may have to give defensive assignment minutes to Greene to guard against Luol Deng.

Some bright points from the lost against the Portland Trailblazers.

1. Demarcus Cousins

Finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks despite being limited with 26 minutes of limited playing time due to foul trouble. Cousins had five fouls in the game. In his rookie campaign, foul trouble meant a bad night out with Cousins. Perhaps Cousins is learning to deal with frustration and how to contribute with limited minutes. Plus Cousins not fouling out when he picks up a fifth foul is an improvement this year.

2. Chuck Hayes

Hayes had his shares of foul trouble in defending Aldridge and Camby, but hauled down 11 rebounds; nine of them are defensive possessions. Hayes is a solid acquisition and every point he scores is a bonus.

3. Jason Thompson

Filled in some quality minutes as Cousins sat with foul troubles. Thompson finished with 11 points in 14 minutes of action. 2 rebounds and a block are also under his belt. This too is a sign of maturation for Thompson. He had seen starting roles on which he contributed to the team in offense and rebounding. In his first stint as a role player off the bench, he struggled last season. Now, Thompson understands his role better.

4. JJ Hickson

10 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Another good acquisition for the Kings. He too is on the way to maturation. In Cleveland, Hickson was vocal on his unhappiness with his bench role. With the Kings, Hickson knows that he may see time as a starter or as a bench player. His energy and hustle is a much welcome source.

Additionally, Travis Outlaw looked lost on the floor against his former team. Outlaw could not find his flow within the offense as he finished with 2 points. But had 7 rebounds for his stint. Westphal utilized Outlaw as a small forward. Back in his younger days, Outlaw could play the three, but as he progressed and aged, he found the power forward role a comfortable one. Westphal must use Outlaw as a back-up PF as the season progresses as Outlaw's defense will be useful. Outlaw can defend bigger power forwards in the west.

Westphal called the defeat a painful one in the growing pains when asked about to comment post-game.

Head coach Paul Westphal speaks about the preparation against the Chicago Bulls for tomorrow night's game.

CHI 108 SAC 98

The Chicago Bulls used an efficient offensive game and managing key stops late in the third quarter and early fourth quarter to fend off the Kings along the way. The Bulls shot 53.8% in the floor including going 50.0% from beyond the arc. The Kings went 20-34 from the charity stripe and thereby denying themselves of a closer game.

The Kings had many defensive lapses and could not get back cover the fast break on which the Bulls had 34 points in the fast break.

The offense was much better around this time with a balanced scoring. Marcus Thornton lead the team with 20 points. Tyreke Evans scored 19 points.

Demarcus Cousins despite fouling out in the fourth quarter, managed a double double of 16 points and 12 rebounds with 2 blocks in the side. John Salmons added 12 points.

Off the bench, JJ Hickson managed 7 points while Jimmer Fredette scored 14 points.

The Bulls won based on their efficiency on offense. The Kings play the Knicks next.

2 games in a row now where DMC's stats look good at first glance, despite not getting a ton of minutes ... until you look at the # of FG attempts. He's taken more shots than he has points. I didn't get a chance to watch the Bulls game, but I'm assuming it looked a lot like the Portland game where he tried to do too much and got way too cute instead of using his strength down low and got blocked on at least 4 separate occasions. I just don't understand his shot selection at all sometimes ... LOL I facepalm myself at least a few times every time I watch a Kings game for this very reason.

Today we take on the Knickerbockers at 5 pm. I think we take the win here because it seems to me that the Knicks haven't put things together yet. Should be a close one nonetheless. I just hope that Paul Westphaul has made our team work on free trhows, and if we can knock them down tonight, we should have a great chance at winning this ballgame. :)
