Johnson announces new 'Here We Build' campaign
SACRAMENTO - Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson announced a regional coalition to figure out how to pay for a new sports and entertainment complex.
Johnson said the coalition will be called "Here We Build" after the initial grass roots effort that helped keep the Kings in Sacramento for another year.
The coalition will be composed of 60 state, local politicians and area business leaders and be headed up by State Senators Darrell Steinberg and Ted Gaines.
Johnson again reiterated that Sacramento by itself cannot get a new arena built, which is why the Here We Build coalition is so important.
"When we do it as a region, we're a top 20 TV market, we have 2.1 million people in our metropolitan area," Johnson said.
The mayor also called the next 100 days critical in getting a deal for a new arena done and hopes to have a financial plan in place by November at the latest.
"We know that there's a deadline looming of March 1st, 2012," Johnson said. "We don't want to wait till March 1st, 2012."
Earlier this month, several entities, including the Maloofs and three of the six counties believed to be involved in the group, expressed doubt about the plan and representatives from Yolo, Yuba and Sutter counties originally said they would not be a part of any partnership. It wasn't made clear if representatives from any of those three counties were present at Tuesday's press conference.
The announcement was made at the California State Railroad Museum. Johnson said they picked the location because it symbolizes the original entrepreneurial spirit of the area.
