MANILA, Philippines--LEARNING ITS LESSONS FROM THE men’s national team debacle, the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas will kick off training for the Philippine youth team in two weeks.

“We’re developing young talents,” said BAP-SBP executive director Patrick Gregorio.

National youth coach Franz Pumaren will form a pool of 25 to 30 players aged 16 to 18 years old that will include a sprinkling of foreign cagers with Filipino roots.

Among the leading aspirants are NCAA juniors Most Valuable Player Ryan Buenafe of San Sebastian, San Beda’s Nico Salva and Perpetual Help’s Franz Dysam.

“We’re also eyeing a 15-year-old, 6-foot-5 Fil-Canadian-Italian and another aspirant from Los Angeles,” said Pumaren.

Gregorio said BAP-SBP has also sealed a multi-million sponsorship deal that will bankroll the RP Youth for three years.

“We will take care of this group,” said Gregorio.

TNX SBP:) :)

That's the first step if we want to regain our lost glory....

now, philippine basketball is very serious in reclaiming the lost glory in asian basketball.... this would be great... imagine if other PBA locals/fil-ams start training in their early age like these teenagers... they might be playing better today..

i hope they include Greg Slaughter and big guys (6'7 and up)...at least 5-8 in the pool. This will be promising as they will be trained earlier and we will not encounter problems in the SEA games as this team should supposedly represent us...our youth squad. :-)

thanks SBP. and with franz pumaren doing the coaching staff, this will, for sure be a success. and with sbp-bap funding the said training.

at least, they are looking towards the "Iranian Basketball Program Model". Those FIBA Asia Champs were the former FIBA Asian Youth Champs, we should really start developing a young team. thanks to SBP, they do not have the "Filipinos are dominant in basketball mentality". :)

At last! Lets bring GS, Jericho De Guzman(if after his league) and Gian Chiu(if after his league) for training pool.

I think Coach Altamirano and Franz Pumaren are doing their best to get involve with Slaughter and some tall and young players in the south.... They asked me where to contact these players and The only thing I can give them is the school where they play...

so if you have more infos on GS..Fajardo.. and some tall kids in the south please let me know so I can share it to Coach Altamirano...:)

It's going to be a tall order to pull out GS, De Guzman, Aguilar and Chiu from their respective schools.

I doubt GS can suit up for the Youth team because its considered a national team and once he gets into that, he loses his CESAFI eligibility, something UV wont allow to happen.

Why would he lose his elegibility?..Im not familiar with CESAFI rules...

As far as im concern this is not a national team that will compete in any tournaments...This is just a pool of players that they will use for the future tournaments...

BTW, who is this 15-year-old, 6-foot-5 Fil-Canadian-Italian that the poster mentioned?... anyone?

Let Ray Parks Jr Train in US... it is better for him...:)

I mean let him play in the US but let's include him to the training pool....

If he become too good and be recruited to play on thier Juniors team....He can no longer play on our team...:( :( :(

for sure Ray Parks Jr. will someday be part of our natl team. just let him hone his talent in the US. If he decides to play for some leagues there someday, it will be good for the Philippines...and as i can see it, Ray Parks Jr. is a proud Filipino. He even speaks better Tagalog than Norwood, Williams or Devance.

RP Youth team competes in international competitions and can be considered a national team..Although there was a set precedent when one UC player did join the Youth Team but did not lose eligibility afterwards..it all depends on how rules are interpreted...CESAFI rule states that once a player is included in the national training pool, he immediately loses eligibility in the CESAFI

best news i've in years for our basketball program!!!! elegible for that age bracket is from 4th yr. high school - 2nd yr college.!! 16-18... GS is 19...

I dont think we have a RP YOUTH TEAM yet...:)

all we have is seniors and women seniors...

this is just a pool of young players that they are trying to develop..

they are our future that's why they decided to train them this early...
They are being train for the future...;)

i still hope that they would create a National Training Center like that of China, funded by both private sector and the government. This way they can train our youth continueously unlike if they are only funded by private companies, once that corpoation decided that it would do no good for their company to fund this program and thay decided to terminate the funding immediately, what will happen to our youth program? Fine Sponsorship from these corporations is a crucial, but what if these corporations experience monetary diffeculties and that they need the money used for our youth program so that they can survive the crisis? Will they government have the right to say "NO, THAT MONEY IS FOR OUR BASKETBALL YOUTH PROGRAM!". What i propose is a combined fund allocation from private sectors and the government. In that way if one of them redirect the money for the program, they still have one left.
