Ricky Rubio : The Next Pistol Pete / Drazen

ricky rubio (spanish teenage phenom)?

ricky rubio (spanish teenage phenom)?

he guys.. what is your take on the so called spanish teenage basketball star? he is starting almost every game of spain at the point guard position and even playing more minutes than juan carlos navarro and jose manuel calderon who are nba veterans. is he really that promising?

he has no outside shooting. he just good in defense and playmaking skills. Even Paul and Wade get past the defense of Rubio. Rubio must improve his Perimeter game to be a complete PG.

seen him play in the finals Between US and Spain, for a 17 year old kid and starting for your national team and doing good against superstars of the NBA, I mean that's really amazing!

Heard from the announcer of that game the he is a future no.1 pick prospect in the NBA.

more info: according to the reports, he turned pro at the age of 14. wow.. spanish league are one of the most competitive in the world and yet, being a part of it at the age of 14 is so amazing for this kid..

calderon is injured, thats why he is logging more minutes. raul lopez is the 3rd PG, la bamba is more of a SG but plays PG when Spain needs a more mature playmaker on the court.

only in the semifinal against lithuania where calderon didn't play but before that, in the game against croatia in the quarterfinals, calderon is doin well even scoring 10 pts on 2 of 2 from beyond the arc, yet, ricky rubio is still playing more minutes than him.

John Wall > Ricky Rubio.

Wall is the projected no.1 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, and he's a younger than Ricky Rubio. He reminds me of an athletic version of Jason Kidd, and this kid also have some decent outside shooting.

After seeing Rubio in the 2010 Olympics, i think he's going to be a good Pg in the NBA, but he need to improve his outside shooting, and stop gambling on defense because that is an automatic foul in the NBA.

Draft Profile of John Wall

John Wall (6-4, 175)

Junior, Raleigh, N.C./Word of God Christian Academy

There isn't a more gifted point guard in the country than Wall. His length, speed, quickness, handle and overall athleticism are peerless, at least on this level. He is a one- man fast break and goes through opposing defenses similar to Memphis standout Derrick Rose. In a classic matchup with fellow superstar Abdul Gaddy (NW Panthers), each accentuated their respective strengths. Wall was unstoppable in the open court and had very little trouble getting to the rim or delivering a spectacular assist. Gaddy, on the other hand, utilized his high basketball IQ, savvy and clever playmaking ability to bring his team back from a 13-point second half deficit to pull out the victory. Hall has the higher upside than Gaddy due to his athletic prowess, but he must become a better jump shooter and develop more savvy because at the next level and beyond defenses will adapt to his up-tempo style.

July, 2008: Wall is a long-armed and athletic lead guard. He can organize and run the team and is an excellent ball handler and passer. At times, he seems to have eyes in the back of his head. He changes speed and directions with a great burst of speed around defenders. He pushes the ball with great pace and makes the right decision on the fast break. He also penetrates deep into the lane and has a special talent to fit the ball into tight places for layups that would result in a turnover for most players. Wall can also drive, draw and kick to open shooters. During this event, he kept his turnovers to a minimum. Wall's an explosive driver both ways in the half court, he likes to drive baseline especially from the left corner. He understands how to play, I saw him repeatedly pass read the defense and make the proper cut after giving up the ball. He's not a great shooter, but is good enough to keep the defense honest. He also showed range with all his 3-point attempts being from off the catch. His shooting form is not bad, but he has an inconsistent release and he does not put his hand toward the rim on his follow through. That problem can be corrected by shooting a high number of quality shots on a daily basis. He's a good defensive rebounder and is always a threat to go coast-to-coast in about four or five dribbles. He is also a skilled offensive rebounder at the scoring guard position when his coach inserts a smaller point guard. He plays in a defensive stance and is a pretty good on-ball defender with quick hands. At times, he hops around too much which could get him beat off the dribble. He's a good shot-blocker from behind in transition or from the weak side in the half court. Wall reminds me of Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics at times; he's an immediate impact player at the high major level.

this is what i meant. ricky rubio is a good ball player but the commentator of the game last sunday is exaggerating things for this kid and even saying that he is a future nba #1 pick. there are a lot of players in the US at the same age of his and more complete with outside shooting but don't get this much of an attention..

He's actually a top 3 pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, but i don't like the way the commentators are exaggerating that he's already a better PG than Chris Paul and Deron Williams.

He's still have some weaknesses, and i think he need to earn the hype because he had an above average performance in the 2008 Olympics.

Well, I'm sure we can find weaknesses in Paul and Williams too... They didn't do ways better than Rubio during the Final, finally...
Sure, he has difficulties defending on Dwayne Wade and Chris Paul. They definitely are the easiest guys to defend in the world.
Two seasons ago, he was the defensive specialist of DKV in EL, and ended first in steals with 3,5+ I think in under 15minutes per game. He only missed one game due to school exams. He may not be the best one on one defender in the world, but he never gives up.
Then he tried two times to play one on one his match up, with his back drives, etc... USA was wise enough not to double team him, he is the most impressive double team breaker I ever seen. But, any time he passes his guy, he had the lay-up or the foul. In ACB or vs the USA.
In the OGs, he did his job, not trying to do more. He is very wise player.

Maybe because, at 17, he's already playing in the olympics. Are there any other 17-year olds star playing in the olympics before?

I think John Wall can play on the USA National Team despite being 16 yrs.old, but there are plenty of talented PG's in the USA, and I think he's going to be the main rival of Ricky Rubio in the near future.

Wall is a legit 6'4" and the best player in the 2010 NBA Draft because of his speed, passing ability, court vision, and supreme athleticism.

I think Rubio will beat Wall in a 1 on 1 competition...

At age 14 Ricky already started playing with the BIG BOYS, last season in the spanish league I think he even lead even lead the league in steals and he is also in the top 5 assist in category....

Rubio is 18 yrs.old this year while Wall played for the Under 16 yrs.old league last Summer.

I don't think Rubio can guard Wall because the boy is one of the fastest Pg in the states, and his vertical leap is over 40".

He just turned 17.....

Rubio was born on October, 21 1990, and he's going to turn 18 yrs.old less than 2 months from now.

Wall is also a better offensively player than Rubio, and he is also capable of filling up the stats sheets just like a shorter version of LeBron James.

one on one im voting with you for wall, but if its a team game.... Rubio for PG hands down. Wall doesnt have the same court vision or passing accuracy yet.

wasnt calderon injured before the olympics? Toronto didn't want him to re-injure himself thats why they asked Spain not to use him anymore.
