Return of the Sydney Kings

What about Matt Nielsen? Maybe he may return as he is probably winding down his career in Europe, would be a huge boost to the club if they can get a marquee Australian like him.

I'm not sure if the club and NBL will go down the route of a marquee player.

It works to a certain degree in football(or soccer to some of us) but it has never been tried in basketball.

For a marquee player to work in Australian basketball it would more than likely have to be an NBA star that everyone recognises, like Pistons legend Grant Hill as an example.

Even though the NBL is struggling in terms of fan interest, the NBA continues to whet the appetites of the casual sports fan in this country.

I would like to see Nielsen back in Sydney again but not as a marquee player though.

If a veteran NBA star wanted to come and play in Sydney, it would be a great bonus for the game here.

Former import stars, Dontaye Draper and Kavossy Franklin have expressed interest in making a return to the Kings.

I would be happy to see these guys return but I would also like to see the club look outside the square and possibly look at Asian or European players as potential imports.

The only European player I can think of that played in the NBL was former Lithuania star Rimas Kurtiniatis who played for Townsville in the early 90's.

I have been thinking we should look at some imports from China and the Philippines as potential players.

Good news for Filipino basketball players, i do hope you find prospects from the Phils. specially at the PG position.

I am not working for the club, mate.

It would be up to the club's recruiters and whovever the coach is to decide what players we get.

I do think that the club should look at the Philippines and throughout Asia for new talent though.

But the club has links with the Philippines previously with our former marketing manager who is Filipino and the club has had a fanbase in Australia's Filipino community previously.

I strongly encourage all Filipino fans and basketball fans throughout Asia to get behind the Kings next season.

Will be tricky. Best players from China won't/can't leave and the ones who can leave won't be good enough or make any difference whatsoever.

Australian basketball has a major problem: the level is higher than Asia yet the interest doesn't compare with Asia. It'll be a shame if the NBL folds but how to get the Asian connection to work is no small task.

I suddenly thought of Brian Goorjian, not sure if he's still in China (Dongguan Leopards Assistant Coach) actually. For someone with that kind of a resume and having to work behind the scenes for a sorry Chinese team... I bet he gets paid higher than in NBL though.

The Sydney Kings are BAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!!!!!! It hasn't been confirmed by the NBL as yet but there was a news story all over Channel Ten here in Sydney last night that says we're back.

The NBL is finally coming home!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You think they will try and lure Goorjian back to coach (I believe he is coaching in China at the moment)?

If ever you want a coach who will demand immediate success it will be him IMO

In any case this is good news for the league in Australia. Absurd that 2 of the main markets for basketball (Sydney and Brisbane) are not even represented. How can you expect the game to grow without these two cities.

I'd say that that is the immediate plan definitely.
They'll do what they can to get Goorjian back and in all honesty, I think he will come back to the Kings.
He has said before that he'd love to come back and coach in the NBL, and with someone of his experience and credentials, why wouldn't the Kings want to approach him to be the coach again?

Well today is March 2nd, and it's expected that at some point during the day, we'll hear an announcement from the NBL confirming that the Sydney Kings will be re-entering the competition.

It's also expected that several former players may come back should the announcement be made today, as quite a few have expressed a desire to play with the Kings once more, but coach wise, there are still a few things to sort out and no real candidates chosen yet.

All in all, it's great news for Australian basketball, and I'll do my best to keep everyone updated about the Sydney Kings, and any player rumours/transfers and general information about them.
For more information regarding the Kings, or for your own leisure, you can vist www.twitter.com/sydneykings or you can visit http://sydney-kings.com.

Also, here is a small video from one of the networks here in Sydney, with an exclusive from a few weeks ago, saying that the Kings would be back.

NBL returns to Sydney
March 18, 2010, 12:53 PM AEST
By: NBL

The National Basketball League is building on the success of the 2009/10 season and will welcome a new team to the league in 2010/11.

Sydney will once again have a team in the National Basketball League, with Basketball Australia announcing today that a club based in the New South Wales capital would be included amongst the nine teams to make up an expanded NBL competition for the 2010/11 season.

Sydney will join the existing eight clubs who competed in the recently completed NBL season to make up an expanded league in 2010/11. Those other eight teams are the Hood Sweeney Adelaide 36ers, Skytrans Cairns Taipans, Gold Coast Blaze, OAMPS Melbourne Tigers, Burger King New Zealand Breakers, Perth Wildcats, Townsville McDonald’s Crocodiles and Wollongong ahm Hawks.

Whilst the name for the new Sydney team is yet to be revealed, Basketball Australia Chief Executive officer Larry Sengstock said that the group backing the club were a diverse collection of very well respected business people who had a passion for basketball.

“I am delighted to announce that the NBL will be back in Sydney next season, with a very strong consortium making a compelling case for BA to issue them with a license,” said Sengstock. “Their application was unanimously endorsed by the NBL Commission last night and as a result they will take their place in the NBL in season 2010/11.

“Whilst the people backing the new Sydney club have asked to remain anonymous for a little longer until they have had the chance to launch the team properly, I can say that the ownership group has impeccable business credentials. They are also all fully committed to making the Sydney team a long-term success both on and off-the-court, and have embraced the NBL’s renewed community focus. This team will be a side for all of Sydney and will have very strong links to the community.”

NBL Commission Chair Diane Smith-Gander said that the NBL would look to continue to expand its footprint by including a team in Brisbane in the future, but that only teams that have satisfied the new, more stringent financial criteria would be awarded licenses.

“The NBL Commission and the BA Board are taking a controlled and strategic approach to expansion and are not rushing into additional marketplaces before the time is right,” said Smith-Gander. “We have Sydney now and that leaves Brisbane as the only major Australian market in which we don’t have direct representation. We are continuing discussions with a group there and are confident that they will come to fruition, we are targeting the 2011/12 season, but we will not hamstring a team by rushing them into the competition before they are completely ready.

“We need to make sure that we only issue licenses to teams that can meet our criteria and that have the capacity to be successful in the long-term. Sydney and the other eight existing teams all satisfied the NBL Commission that they deserved a license. The NBL will now build on the success of this most recent season, which saw increased attendance and strong television coverage.”

“BA and the NBL have been undergoing a necessary commercial reform process over the past two years,” added Smith-Gander. “The announcement of the nine teams for next season is another significant step in basketball’s growth as a sport.”

The NBL season will start in October 2010 and will conclude in March 2011. The 2011 Finals will once again see the top four teams qualify for the post-season, with one playing four and two playing three in best-of-three Semi Finals. The Grand Final will once again be a best-of-three.

The consortium responsible for the Sydney bid will be holding a press conference tomorrow at 11am to reveal the team name (which I'm almost certain will be the Kings) as well as who their financial backers are and potential sponsors.
The minute I hear some news, I'll post the links here :)

When will recruitment commence? Any news about coach?

Well the recruitment stage begins when the season is over, so that's right now.
There's a few players that they're looking at, but nothing confirmed as of yet.
Though several former players want to come back in BJ Carter, Kavossy Franklin and Dontaye Draper.

And coach wise, they're yet to decide.
They did have a main candidate, but he seems to have gone off the radar now.

There is some news on the coach front now.
Apparently, despite Goorjian seeming comfortable in China, the consortium is in talks with him to be coach once more, as well as former King Ian Robilliard, who is now has an involvement with an Academy of Sport over here in Australia.

Seems like Goorj is the favourite right now, as not a lot of people are confident about having Robilliard as coach.

Looks like things have changed once again.
Apparently Robilliard has said that he doesn't want to be the coach, but reports are suggesting that he will be.
Goorjian will be at the club as an ambassador, promoting the game in China and helping the younger players.

Bit of an article with some background information about the announcement set to be made today.

My hopes for the Kings

My hopes for the Kings

I really hope that the Sydney Kings bring back the "high flying, slamma jamma, in your face mama" type of basketball that was very, very entertaining back when I was young during the late 80s through to the late 90s. Back then they were REALLY the Sydney KINGS. Oh yeah, they were so popular because they had American imports that were stylish, entertaining and who could jump to the roof. Guys like former Villanova University and former Final Four Hero: Dwyane McClain, Iowa's "Mr. Magic" (more like Australia's Isiah Thomas) Steve Carfino, "THE D-TRAIN", Idaho's "Amare Stoudemire" - Leon "NEON" Trimmingham, James "Showtime" Smith with his awesome rejections to the 4th row and his eye popping slams, San Diego's Streetball sensation - Kendrick Johnson and Sydney even had a "Baby Shaq" (though his work ethic was horrendous) former NBA player Acie Earl.
