901 Prepscoop's Weekend of Basketball

Basketball, basketball and more basketball and it still could not be enough as several events took place with the Mayb, The Rhodes Team Camp and AAU basketball over at Bishop Byrne. Mostly this weekend was for player observations but some teams took home some hardware. Over at Bishop Byrne on Sunday, Memphis Select and the Memphis WarEagles( Anthony Carrol, Cameron Payne) looked to capture championship but the Memphis Hoopers(15’s and 16’s) and team out of Nashville were trying to foil their celebrations. The WarEagles won the Division 2 State while the Memphis Select put a stop to a great comeback attempt by the Hoopers who were down as many as 22 in the 3rd quarter and clawed it down to 5 going into the 4th. Select pulled away thanks to the play of Cedric Mcafee, Rodnerius Lewis and 8TH grader Myron Johnson who has to be put in the top 5 as far as point guards in the 2012 class if he’s not in the top 3.
In the MAYB, the Ballers were in action Friday and it was a return to the past for Jalen Jackson who suited up for the Ballers for the first time since 2006. The 6’3 SG/SF didn’t particularly have a great game but it was enough as the Ballers beat the Bearcats led by Adam Weary, John Ross Glover and Martavious Newby. Jamal Donaldson, CJ Shepherd and Alex Anderson all played well. As reported by Steve Johnson, the Bearcats got their revenge on Sunday beating the Ballers in the championship game by double digits. Congratulation go out to the Bearcats. At Hamilton on Saturday, the East Arkansas Heat took on the Memphis Select led by Darry Dowdy (Ridgeway) and Jeff Graham. Select used a furious run to come back on the Heat but Curtis Branch’s shooting kept them at bay as East Arkansas got the win. Branch is arguably the best shooter that I’ve seen all year. He could make some noise in Jonesboro this year and he’s only going to the 10th grade.
Rhodes Team Camp was an opportunity for fans to come and get previews of what’s in store for next year. The two most anticipated games of the weekend were Melrose Vs. Briarcrest and Briarcrest and Ridgeway. Ridgeway took on North Carolina commit Leslie McDonald and big Johnny Williams but the Roadrunners raced away with the win behind the play of two of the best bigmen in Memphis, Cordario Macklin and Tarik Black. Marterrance Brock is starting to look like a top 10 player in his class with nice midrange game with the pull up jumper and his perimeter defense. The older he gets, the better he seems to become. Melrose was probably the best team that I saw with Chris Jones and who some say is the future of Memphis basketball, Adonis Thomas. They put the clamps on Briacrest limiting McDonald to frustrated drives that ended in misses off the rim. The Golden Wildcats got up as many as 30 cruising to an easy win. The new slimmer Bobby Parks Jr, looked as skilled as any player that was there this weekend although his shooting was off a little. He should have a big year and turn into one of the top 10 best players in the city regardless of class. Whitehaven will be another team to watch with Terry Leake, and Khari McFadden who maybe one of the best players no one has heard of. He can put it on the floor, hit the perimeter shot and rebound. He’s really an intriguing 2 guard prospect. If the weekend’s action was any indication on the how the season will play out, we could have the most exciting prep basketball season in a while

Adonis Thomas, 6-5, 190

Thomas is a big-time athlete who can play in the post or on the perimeter. He beats the opposition with his scoring and passing. His ball skills are good enough for him contribute on the perimeter. He is long, athletic and skilled. He is a good rebounder who routinely grabs boards in traffic and takes the ball up the floor to score or assist. He is a decent midrange shooter but needs to improve his range to become a big time perimeter threat. He will make the occasional 3, but needs to improve his consistency on the shot. He is an aggressive defender and is at his best as a post defender at this time. He is a mismatch as a front-court post -- Thomas is too quick and athletic for most players in his age group. Thomas is a top-40 player in the Class of 2011 nationally.

adidas Super 64 and the Main Event make Vegas the only place to be.
Part two of the summer scene begins in earnest today with the start of the adidas Super 64 spectacular and across town the Main Event making Las Vegas a showcase for hoops as well as whats its known for already.
The Nashville Celtics bring 17's and 16's into the Super 64 while the Memphis Select will represent with 16's and 15's.
The Celtics will be at full strength for the first time this year and are looking to close with a flurry. We all know the exploits of Jon Hood (Kentucky), Casey Prather (Jackson Northside) and Drew Barham (CBHS), who have been consistently great all summer, but the return of Drew Kelly (Centennial) should certainly bolster the inside prowess for the Celts.
In the 16's the return of Arthur McMillan (Hillsboro) combined with Cody Henegar (Marion County) make this Celtics 16 and under squad dangerous. The strength of the team is guard play and they have a fearsome foursome in Ish Sanders (Cleveland), Mitchell Hill (Cookeville), Meiko Lyles (NCA) and Jay Murphy (Bolivar Central).
Memphis Select brings a group of rising players who are more than ready to make themselves a name on the national level. Names you will be familiar with in the coming months include Brandon Wright (Hillcrest), McCoy Pope (Craigmont), Octavious Ellis (Whitehaven), Cedric McAfee (Craigmont) and Nathaniel Rucker (Melrose).
In the 15's the Select have Class of 2012 rising star Myron Johnson (?) and will welcome some players from the 15 and under national championship Memphis Stallions, who have completed their season, including Ray Parks (St. George's), Tony Seal (Craigmont), Marcus Crawford (Sheffield) and Telvin Wilkerson (Melrose).
Moving over to the Main Event, Tennessee representation in the 17 and under is quite strong with the Memphis Magic, Memphis Hoopers and Nashville Celtics Green all prepared for action.
The Magic led by Joe "The Real Thing" Jackson (White Station) feature some of the best players in the class of 2010 alongside prep school bound Sampson Carter (Ridgeway). Mardracus Wade (Mitchell), Tarik Black (Ridgeway), and Tim Peete (Memphis Central) boast a seriously talented and relatively young lineup.
The Hoopers may be without the services of Ole Miss commitment Reginald Buckner (Manassas), but that did'nt slow them down at Battle of the Bluff so why should it in Vegas. Tyler Stone (Memphis Central) is more than ready to exert some shine and become the player he is destined to be. Jonathan Milewski (ECS) and Louis Jones (Carver) are moving up the charts with their efforts and hard play.

I'm very annoyed of the fact that the RP youth team does not include Ray Parks in their team! now is the best chance to acquire him as a member of the Philippine Nat'l team, If USA likes his game then he might play for their nat'l team and not ours..
