Qatar wins right to host Fifa 2022 WC

I don't know why any of these countries even want to host the WC (or the Olympics). The cost to the public is far too great compared to what they bring in. These huge sporting events are "white elephants" for the countries that want them. It's like the NBA/NFL/MLB teams that threaten to leave US cities unless the city governments kick in $500+ million to build a new stadium.

Qatar was chosen because it's a sexy, new country that the European and Asian aristocracy flocks to.

They will build stadiums, no doubt. The problem is the massive corruption and the amount of money this World Champs will cost because of a huge chunk of money will vanish in pivate pockets. Russia would be better of investing money in the youth. We see all federations complaining that money is being pumped in professional teams, whereas recreational sports and youth teams have no funds and the situation is much worse than ever before. Same in basketball. Remember the last Winter Olympics, where the Russian delegation was partying hard every day at the expense of leaving coaches at home (!) and when Russia has hardly won any medals and this scandal came out, nobody was fired, everything remaine like it has been before.

The only positive detail is that several cities will have good attractions after the championship, local professional teams could use. But providing a major boost for soccer in Russia? I doubt it. Soccer is #1 kind of sport anyway and enough people feel attracted to it. It's sth. different with Olympic games with many random disciplines. Basketball has profited world-wide after Barcelona because the world has seen the Dream Team. If an event like that would happen in a free country with a free press and transparent power system, these Games would truly be a boost and not yet another chance to steal money.

Soccer is known as sports for the masses not for the few chosen ones. In what regards do you consider Qatar as "sexy"? Lots to see in order to spend a whole week of holidays?

In any case, the choices have been announced and they will not be reversed. I just hope for political changes in Russia, so people can really benefit from these games (unlike the Sochi Olympics that already cost much more money than originally proposed, while nothing has been built so far). Qatar, well, it won't get bigger and it is sure to spend tons of money to make it a futuristic event. I still remain highly sceptical about tiny countries hosting such events.

It will give a boost not by rising the popularity of the sport, which I wrote myself that is already popular, but by building facilities.

Hosting event requires investments but also return lot of incomes.
Anybody knows the numbers from the previous tournaments?
If like you say, the investment would be made from the state's money, and the outcome would go into the oligarch's pocket it's a problematic thing.
The question is if it should be FIBA's duty to investigate the corruption of the country, which is an interior political issue.
Besides, is the situations at Brazil, or South Africa, or Argentina for example are better? I really don't know, but who should judge it?
 
I think MV and IP are right, but Goga if you had choice where would you decide to place the tourney.

South Africa (Africa )
Germany (WE)
Japan/Korea ?(Asia)
France (WE )
US (America)
Rome (WE )
Mexico (America)
Spain (WE )
Argentina (America)
Germany (WE )

I'd say Western European & American countries are kinda overexposed in this list, so it makes a sense that Eastern European (Russia) & Asia (Qatar) got the tickets.

Both countries aren't exactly beacons of freedoms & human rights , but if South Africa got it , why not those two ?

I havent seen one single good reason why Qatar should not host the World Cup.. All arrogant favoritism and misconceptions.....Who has been to Qatar can someone tell me?

I am personally happy for Qatar to host the world cup...banish thoughts about no alcohol, inappropriate dress regulation. Western culture is already prevalent throughout the entire the higher classes and circles of Arabia like Western cultures and sometimes beaten the Westerns to it...

firstly it is going to be but very light restrictions.....secondly talk about no football history or no national team....well here's my answer

If Qatar impressed the football world on hosting the AFC Asian Cup 2011, then they have the right to host the FIFA World Cup. By the way, it's 1 day to go before the Asian Cup starts.

Some funny details about Qatar winning of 2022 World Cup were revealed:

The Qatari representative (named Mohamed Bin Hammam) decided to run for FIFA presidency and was caught giving bribes to be elected.

Nothing special so far, but then an e-mail to FIFA General Secretary was intercepted, with some interesting details, I quote: he (Mohamed Bin Hammam) thought you can buy FIFA as they bought the WC .

I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but I think everybody knew that there was a lot of bribery going on with these international sporting events. It seems like everybody has been doing it, especially with the World Cup and Olympics, but possibly not with the Island Games.
