PUR – Eldo Caserta’s Diaz on Puerto Rican national team radar

SAN JUAN (FIBA Americas Championship) - Puerto Rico are keen to add Eldo Caserta's Guillermo Diaz to their squad for this year's FIBA Americas Championship.

Diaz, 23, has been a huge hit in Italy's Lega A and the executive director of the Puerto Rican national team, Agustin Diaz, confirmed to El Nuevo Dia: "We are interested in his services.

"I am going to call him soon. I don't want to leave things to the last moment."

Diaz is averaging 16.9 points in 34.2 minutes per game in Italy.

He is making almost 57% (37 of 65) of his shots inside the arc while also drilling 40% (14 of 35) beyond it.

The Puerto Ricans are also hopeful of bringing Buster Figueroa back into the squad.

Figueroa played in 2007 when the FIBA Americas Championship was staged in Las Vegas but wasn't able to play last summer at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

"He is going to accept the invitation," Diaz said.

"We had a very positive conversation."

Figueroa plays for Capitanes de Arecibo and recently turned out for the team in the FIBA Americas League Group A clashes.

The FIBA Americas Championship will serve as the qualifying tournament for the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

I hope that Guillermo Diaz accepts the invitation. He would make the PR team without any problems. In my opnion he would be the starting shooting guard.

I really dont want Buster on the team. He is a tremendous player in the BSN but not for international play. With players like Lee, Vassallo and Peavy, Buster wouldnt be needed as a SF.

BS... Buster would be a good SF for the NT, it sure would be nice to have a guy who is so offensively aware coming of the bench alongside Javier Mojica and Filiberto Rivera, three guys that can really fill it up for you in a flash. And that's not all, Buster Figueroa is a nice offensive rebounder who is not afraid to crash the boards. As for Nathan Peavy, there's no doubt that the kid is good, but I prefer to see Buster Figueroa playing with the NT, because quite frankly I don't get it why the TRUE MVP for the last two BSN regular seasons is not playing for the NT.

What PR should really do is get rid of Daniel Santiago out of there. They guy is a cry baby, he is super inconsistent plus he is getting old. Why not let guys like Nathan Peavy, Luis Rivas, Angel 'Piwi' Garcia and Angel Vasallo bring their new blood to the NT. Worth mentioning is Alphonse Dyer, but he probably wont reach past been an emergency back up.

Who, knows, maybe with the new rule that allows second generation puertoricans to play for the NT who knows what might happen.

We have to see what Kevin Hamilton brings to the table, he is a certified offensive nightmare by scoring at will and making some smart decisions with his sweet ball handling and pinpoint passing, plus he has suffocating defensive skills that easily match some of PRs best defenders, I'm not lying look at the stats for the past two BSN seasons, you'll see that Hamilton has been amongst the top in quite a few categories, both offense and defense.

Larry Ayuso is going to have some competition, but I highly doubt that he is cut from the NT, unless he injures himself.

There's also the talented Mr. Rick Apodaca he was part of the 2004 team.

Will see...

[English Please] Believe me I am not the only one who doesnt want Buster on the team. Yes its true that he is a really good player in the BSN but that doesnt mean that it translates to international play. He is not even used to play SF, he is used to playing PF. Not sure how effective a 6'3" PF can be in international play.

I prefer younger players like Huertas, Vassallo, Edwin Ubiles, Kevin Hamilton and Nathan Peavy than Buster, Ayuso and Apodaca right now. Dani Santiago should be replaced by Dyer, Victor Davila, Angel Piwi Garcia, Jorge Bryan Diaz, Luis Colon and Carlos YAO Lopez...

Its pretty lame how PR doesn't get the most efficient talent out there.

Jonathan Rodriguez is a very talented F who can rebound and score at a high rate.

Why not rebuild?

Is Ayuso, Buster, Santiago, Reyes and crew will be apart of the future? NO.

Why not give our young talent some FIBA experience so by 2010-2012 we won't be so dependent on washed up not that talented players where they only best attribute is their experience.

We should look to AD Vassallo and Jonathan Rodriguez at the 3.

David Huetras, Guillermo Diaz are obvious options at the two. They've been the most talented out of high school and now they're producing at a HIGH RATE in both very competitive leagues (Huetras in the Big 12 and Diaz in Italy)
Galindo can ball too.
Jesus Verdejo is a very productive G/F @ South Florida who plays Sprewell like defense.

Arroyo is obvious...but for the future at PG...Barea and DENIS CLEMENTE, yes DENIS CLEMENTE who recently had 44 points against Texas and DEFEATED Texas (ranked 12 in the country). Denis is arguable the fastest player in the world, and has 3pt range and a lot of scoring ability. His PG skills are immature but he can grow...has a lot of room for potential.

Isaac Sosa is another special player @ UCF
Same with Soto @ Florida International

Our big men SUCK, we're so loaded at guard but so depleted in the frontcourt...Sanchez hasn't made any significance progress, and Ramos is a lazy bum who doesn't care about basketball or life.

Colon is a GOOD DEFENDER and REBOUNDER, but he's sloppy offensively...send him an invite since he's very young.

Victor Davilia is a hidden gem @ VT, he's going to be a special one.

PG - Arroyo(6"2) #7
SF - Huetras(6"5) #6
SF - Vassalo(6"7) #8
PF - Davilia(6"10) #14
C - Ramos(7"3) # 4

6th man
Barea #5

Reserves
Jesus Verdejo (6"5 SG/SF) #9
Galindo (6"7 SF/PF) #12
Guillermo Diaz (6"2 G)# 13
Ricky Sanchez (7" SF/PF/C) # 11
Denis Clemente 6"1 (PG/SG) #15
Luis Colon (6"11 C) #10

or Mike Rosario/Josue Soto/Isaac Sosa

Profiles.

Arroyo - the leader and most talented player on the squad
Huetras - one of the best shooters/scorer in the SEC/NCAA good size for SG...good handles, good court awareness, perfect compliment to Arroyo.
Vassalo - Has been one of the most efficient players in the ACC in the last 3 years...one of the most efficient shooters...can pass the ball very well, can play point forward, can drive to the basket really well, has a lot of bulk can take hard fouls and score in the paint, Mike Miller type SF.
Davilia - most talented PR prospect out there...6"10 235 lbs PF with a lot of IQ with the ball, very skilled and athletic...plays like a veteran, a lot of defensive potential.
Ramos - is Ramos

Barea - pass first floor general, a lot of NBA/FIBA exp...future PG of this team
Clemente - fastest player in the world, one of the best guards in the Big 12.
Diaz - producing at a high level in a very good league
Sanchez - potential, potential, potential...has the confidence of a virgin.
Verdejo - really talented player who can do a little of everything, streaky
Galindo - could use another PF filler...Galindo is really skilled and has FIBA experience
Sosa - going to be a future 20 ppg scorer in the NCAA...one of the best young combo guards.
Rosario - one of the best freshman guards in the Big East. Steve Francis type player
Soto - Floor general, up coming NCAA player...plays similar to Steve Nash.

Why is everybody so down on Figueroa? He's only 27 or 28. He's got a great shot. He can run. He can get rebounds. What more do you want in a forward?

I don't know where else to post this story so...

Clemente's 44 tie Big 12 mark as K-State drops No. 12 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas -- Michael Beasley had a season for the ages for Kansas State. Denis Clemente made his mark with a game the Wildcats won't soon forget.

The Kansas State guard tied Beasley's year-old Big 12 single-game record with 44 points, leading the Wildcats to an 85-81 overtime upset of Texas (No. 12 ESPN/USA Today, No. 11 AP) on Saturday.

<snip>

Clemente, a native of Puerto Rico, sat out last season after transferring from Miami. He hadn't scored more than 20 points for the Wildcats this season before scorching the Longhorns with 13-of-25 shooting, making all six of his 3-pointers and all 12 of his free throws.

All of his 3-pointers came in the second half.

"I need to score to win," Clemente said. "It felt like there was an ocean in that rim."

Kansas State has won three in a row after an 0-4 start in league play. Coach Frank Martin credits much of the turnaround to the leadership and play of Clemente, who had been suspended at Miami at the end of the 2006-2007 season for a violation of team rules.

"He's taken this team, like he should because he's our most experienced player, by the horns here and just led us," Martin said. "Especially after the tough times."

It almost wasn't enough Saturday. Despite not being able to stop Clemente from scoring just about everywhere on the court, Texas rallied from 17 points down in the second half to send the game into overtime.

Not that Texas didn't try to stop him. Coach Rick Barnes threw a bevy of players at Clemente, only to watch him tire out the Longhorns one by one. Clemente's 44 points were the most scored on the Longhorns in 32 seasons on their home court.

"He put on a show," Barnes said.

Texas players were stunned by the scoring outburst.

"I knew coming in he was a good player, but nobody expects him to drop 44 on you," said Texas guard A.J. Abrams, who set his own Big 12 mark for career 3-pointers. Abrams made four, breaking the record of 338 he shared with Kansas' Jeff Boschee (1999-2002).

Why is everybody so down on Figueroa? He's only 27 or 28. He's got a great shot. He can run. He can get rebounds. What more do you want in a forward?

He's 6"4...maxed out his potential...lacks BBall IQ...Vassallo, Verdejo and Rodriguez are much more skilled and talented...we need Vassalo, Verdejo and Rodriguez to get minutes to gain experience for the future.

Huetras is the future at the 2, Allan Houston clone...along with back ups in Diaz and Clemente...both excellent electric combo guards.

Arroyo is the man at the 1...with experienced, talented, skilled and very efficient Jose Juan Barea, the young general as the back up.

at the 4...Davilia should get some looks...but honestly we should try to grab Carmelo from USA...if he's still eligible to play for PR.
Alex Galindo should get consideration also...Ricky Sanchez is an obvious. Angel Garcia is unproven...hopefully he becomes more all around than Sanchez.

at the 5...Ramos is the man, I don't really have a problem with Santiago, he's not that bad. Colon should get an invite for his defense and youth.

I don't know about the other players for forward that PR is considering, but Buster is the man for me. The guy is an absolute beast. Maybe he lacks in-game IQ, but he makes plays. He scores points and grabs rebounds. Sure, he's short, but so was Charles Barkley. I say PR should go with the best players they have, not the best players they might have.

i will never forget melo's face on the bench at the 2004 olympics 1st game.

One of the greatest performances in the history of basketball. Puerto Rico could've beaten anybody that day. Casiano, Arroyo, Ayuso, Ortiz...a nearly flawless game.

"They play the game the way it's supposed to be played." --Allen Iverson

PUR – Puerto Rico’s Rodriguez pulling all the right strings for Donetsk

DONETSK (FIBA Americas/ Superleague) – Ukraine is a long way from San Juan, Puerto Rico, but when a job offer in basketball is on the table, it’s never too far to travel.

It makes it easier if the team has a chance to win some silverware, which is why Puerto Rico international Andres Rodriguez is now plying his trade in the Superleague.

Rodriguez, one of the most spectacular point guards in the history of the Ukrainian top flight, joined a very ambitious BC Donetsk team and is arguably the biggest reason why the Superleague newcomers have a shot at winning the championship.

Surrounded by stars like PJ Tucker, Chris Owens, Demetrius Alexander and Milutin Aleksic, it’s down to Rodriguez to make sure Donetsk jell.

The 28-year-old leads the league in both assists (7.0) and steals (3.3), and is doing his best to make sure Donetsk find their rhythm.

Numerous injuries and new signings during the course of the season have made it hard though.

Donetsk are third in the standings behind powerhouses Azovmash and BC Kyiv with a 13-8 record.

Rodriguez , who is averaging 9.4 points and 4.1 rebounds, spoke to FIBA.com’s Oleksiy Naumov after their last-second 74-73 win over Sumykhimprom this week.

FIBA: Congratulations on the win, Andres! The game was much closer than most people expected it to be, considering Sumykhimprom had lost nine in a row before this, and you only won with a last-second shot. Did this surprise you?

Rodriguez: Not really. We knew Sumy was a tough team, they played us pretty good at home and we knew that out here they were much better, so we were expecting a really tough game and we definitely got it. They played really well. We started very bad on defense and they scored a lot of easy baskets and this gave them the confidence and when you got a team with a lot of confidence it’s really tough to beat them. We are still struggling in getting to know each other on the court. We got a lot of good players, but all of them got in different systems, so it’s up to us to figure it out. We know it’s going to be a tough month, but as soon as we get everybody on the same page, we are going to be really good.

FIBA: Yes, this is what your coach (Olympic champion Igors Miglinieks) was talking about – that you basically have a new team and it’s like a pre-season camp for you. PJ Tucker got hurt nine games into the campaign and Milutin Aleksic and Demetrius Alexander joined during the season. How difficult is it for you as a point guard to be able to direct the players that don’t know the system?

Rodriguez: It’s really hard. It’s one of the hardest things in basketball when you get a different team every now and then and you got such high expectations. Our president got together a lot of players that had won championships in different leagues, so I think he is expecting somewhere around that. This is my first year that a team is changing so much and I guess I have to learn it the hard way.

FIBA: Your roster is probably the strongest in the Superleague right now, especially after Azovmash, Khimik and Kyiv let most of their key players go. How much more time does Donetsk need to realize its full potential?

Rodriguez: It all depends. Once we start clicking, you will see the difference on the scoreboard and on the way we play defense and offense – you will see a different team. Right now we are still arguing with each other over how each of us plays and for the coach it’s really hard to get everybody playing in the same way. The problem is not only getting the new players, it’s also getting players back from injuries. But we still have seven games left before the playoffs, so hopefully everybody can jell before it starts.

FIBA: Looking back at your upbringing in the sport, were you taught to be a pure point guard?

Rodriguez: When I was 14, I was more of a scoring point guard and I started to play with the guys that pretty much molded me into what I am today. I don’t really think about shots unless I have to shoot, which could be a disadvantage, but I’ve already won four championships so obviously it works for me and I’m going to stick with that.

FIBA: Who is your favorite point guard in the world?

Rodriguez: Jason Kidd.

FIBA: He also doesn’t think much about scoring, but gets a lot of triple-doubles. How many have you had?

Rodriguez: Not sure how many, but had a few. I had seven rebounds today. And I also missed a triple-double once with points.

FIBA: We checked out your profile on your team website and it lists Ronaldo as your favorite athlete. Why him?

Rodriguez: Well, my favorite athlete is Michael Jordan, but my favorite soccer player is Ronaldo. I started watching soccer with the Brazil national team and he was their main guy and started just following him to the Inter Milan, Barcelona, Madrid. I like him, I really like his game. He’s very confident when he has the ball and when he can make the pass he makes the pass. He doesn’t just think about scoring all the time.

FIBA: Andres, tell us about your national team experience with Puerto Rico.

Rodriguez: I played on the Puerto Rico junior team as well as the senior national team. I went to Pan American games and Central American games and we won Gold at the Pan American games. This coming summer I am due to play for them again, not sure what tournament it’s going to be, though.

FIBA: It’s been great catching up with you. We look forward to seeing you wear the Puerto Rico jersey again.

PUR – Puerto Rico’s Barea, Arroyo give thumbs-up to Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN (2009 FIBA Americas Championship) – Jose Barea and Carlos Arroyo look certain to play for Puerto Rico this summer as they attempt to qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.

Barea is currently playing with the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Semi-Finals while former NBA star Arroyo is competing with European giants Maccabi Tel Aviv.

"We’ve had communication with Barea and Arroyo and both are delighted to participate in the FIBA Americas Championship,” said Agustin Diaz, the general manager of the Puerto Rico national team.

“Nobody has expressed any problems about their availability.”

Puerto Rico narrowly missed out on a place at the Beijing Games after losing to Germany in the final game of last summer’s FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Athens.

To get ready for the FIBA Americas Championship, which is being staged in Mexico, Diaz is considering taking on a star-studded Dominican Republic in six warm-up games at the end of July and beginning of August.

Three of the friendly encounters would be in Puerto Rico and three in the Dominican Republic.

"Scheduling six games against the Dominican Republic would be a great warm-up because they will have a great team," Diaz said to El Nuevo Día.

The Dominicans, if they have their leading players involved, would appear to have a great chance of reaching Turkey.

NBA players Al Horford, Francisco García, Charlie Villanueva and Trevor Ariza could all play for the Dominican Republic and help them reach the FIBA World Championship for the first time in 31 years.

Puerto Rico would then take part in the Tuto Marchand Cup (August 18-20) at Coliseo de Puerto Rico along with Argentina, Brazil and Canada.

Although some of our Puerto Rican friends at IBN will disagree with me, I still think Arroyo is an amazing player. It'll be great to see Barea and Arroyo on the same team again: two fast guards playing off one another.

We'll have to wait and see who else Puerto Rico brings before making predictions. ;)

Same here, but I want Andres Rodriguez or Kevin Hamilton off the bench for the 3rd PG.

K-Ham lacks the ball handling of a Filiberto or a Andres Rodriguez to play the PG at that level. Plus he is really inconsistent with his shot.

Puerto Rico will go with the same old backcourt of Arroyo, Barea, Filiberto and Ayuso. The other backcourt spot is between Mojica, Hamilton, Apodaca, Guille and Huertas.

Vasallo is a lock for SF. Also to consider Pellot (ballhog), Kevin Ham (too weak for the SF) and Buster...

PJR, Ricky, Angelo, Narvaez, Dyer...

Good team also....but I think that Angel Garcia today is better than Ricky...

my two cents

1. filiberto- out terribly underperforming the last 12 months.

2. Rodriguez or berdiel should come in and have a try.

3. Ayuso better get his act together cause the last 2 years except for the 2007 ToA have been abismal (BSN, NBDL, and Europe, NT so so).

4. Used to be a big fan of Apodaca- however, OUT! came back from the lesion scoring single digits, TO's etc.

5. Ricky Sanchez is young, hopefully, he has matured (although his recent struggles with the ponce lions administration speak otherwise) terrible terrible. He should become more involved in offensive movements without the ball and for god's sake he is a 7FT he should at least try to get 2 rebounds a game and not stand behind the 3PT line. IF Manolo had any sense of coaching he would add to his 2 play repertoire a Hi-Lo with Sanchez and Ramos. Ricky if he does not improve at all in the next few tournaments the coaches should give up on him. If he does not have the desire to improve he just wont.

6. Can Ramos not foul every single time he guards someone (otherwise mild improvement).

7. Some will argue about the inclusion of R. Dalmau (having a phenomenal season) into the team. Unfortunately when he plays for the NT he forgets how to play is kinda sad. And wants the offense to run through him too much.

8. Alarming Concern about the EGOS of Arroyo and Barrea clashing this summer.

9. Will Guillermo Diaz ever get over himself and play?

10. Alex Falcon, not a big fan, however he was a good role player. Also, quite possibly the only true role player that actually knew his role.

11. Can we have any other plays than Ayuso double pick running 3pt, and arroyo shouting a jumper from the key.

12. DR is a tough team if they bring everyone, but no PG.

13. Brazil, i dont have time to type, but will win Gold (with all NBA players).

14. Argentina probably wont bring big names they figure they can classify with 2nd tier team. Big NBA names for then have suffered injuries in summer tournaments recently. Even in the worse possible scenario that they did not qualify i am going to take a risk:D and say that Fiba will most probably extend an invitation to the #1 ranked team in the world.

15. I want a rematch with Uruguay.

My team pending final revision:

PJ Ramos
M. Narvaez
Ricky Sanchez
Angelo Reyes
AD Vasallo
Carmelo Antrone Lee
Buster Figueroa
Carlos Arroyo
JJ Barrea
A. Rodriguez (the only true point guard should be allowed at least 1 chance).
Ayuso (with some reservations)
Mojica
13th/alternate one of the big young guys JB Diaz, Gabriel P Colon, Angel Rosa

PS get rid of Cintron for the love of GOD.:mad::mad::mad::mad:
