I have to admit, I've been somewhat of a wrestling fan for years, though not as big as I am a basketball fan. However, what I heard today was just shocking. Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy and son Daniel were found dead in their suburban Atlanta home, today. The cause was not yet known. Benoit missed an ECW title match yesterday, due to personal reasons. Did this happen yesterday?
Benoit was one of my favorite wrestlers. He was born in Montreal, grew up in Edmonton and trained in Stu Hart's dungeon in Calgary. I remember when he won the world title a few years ago and celebrated with his friend Eddie Guerruro.
Man, these two cases involving the deaths of these guys are really tragic.

I was really a huge wrestling fan for some years, mostly during 1997-2002 years, when it was at the peak of popularity. Chris Benoit wasn't the reason I started to watch wrestling, but he quickly became one of my favorite superstars, as I started to watch it on weekly basis. After year or two I took a time and money to start to collect wrestling tapes, and obtaining more footage of Benoit was one of the reasons to do it, since some of his old matches from Japan were really awesome.

Wrestling is an industry where a lot of people is dying young. Even if it's been called a "fake" sport-entertainment, combination of tough schedule (no summer or winter break, no break at all), physical and mental pressure, drugs, steroids, alcohol and biggest killer of them all - pain killers, took out a lot of lifes.

But Chris Benoit was one of the wrestlers who I always expect to be active (and alive) for a long time and one of the guys from sport industry I always wanted to meet. He was always professional, never put himself in a trouble, was really highly respected by everybody. So it was even bigger shock for me, when a few hours ago I've got a message that he, his wife and son are all dead. He can be gone, but all memories - starting with his win at Wrestlemania XX in Madison Square Garden in 2004 - will never be gone....

R.I.P Chris.

PS. If there are any non-wrestling members who would like to check who was he, there are some good music videos on youtube:

The time right now is 10:54 am Manila time.

CNN & BBC has not picked up the news yet on their website, but any news as big as this should be picked up by the major news networks in about an hour's time.

Otherwise, its a hoax.

I have really a bad feelings. I usually trust David Meltzer (probably the best wrestling insider, well known for his wekly Wrestling Observer Newsletter), but this time I would prefer for him to be wrong, very wrong:

"Wrestling insider Dave Meltzer, who runs the website wrestlingobserver.com and knew Benoit for 20 years, said he’s heard “a million rumours” about what happened in the Benoit house.
Benoit was supposed to appear at a wrestling show in Beaumont, TX, on Saturday, but didn’t appear, Meltzer said.
When he failed to appear at a pay-per-view event Sunday in Houston, Meltzer said, organizers covered by saying Benoit had to cancel because of “personal issues.”
Meanwhile, Metlzer said, WWE brass were frantically phoning Benoit at home to find out what was going on. "

And this posted on Meltzer's website makes this even worse:
"According to a report on WAGA-TV, investigators believe Chris Benoit killed his wife and son at some point over the weekend, and then killed himself earlier today.
They reported first hearing from a concerned neighbor and that the three bodies were found in separate rooms.
Detective Bo Turner told the staion the case was being investigated as a murder-suicide, but it could not be confirmed until the evidence was examined by a crime lab."

Sad, it doesn't matter if you're rich, famous, poor or an outcast, it is sad.

I remember Benoit from when I used to watch WCW's Monday Nitro, back then he was one of my favorites and one of the most underated wrestlers.

I have not seen wrestling for more than 6 years, and he still was one of my favorites!

Rest in peace!

I don't buy it. Benoit cared too much for his wife and kids. He wouldn't have done this. This kind of stuff can happen in big cities. Just don't pin it on Benoit unless the evidence definately says otherwise.

i was so shocked to find out that chris benoit is dead. actually last saw, i watch smackdown, and he was there with a match against bobby lashley. man, i felt sad, coz we already lost an eddie guerrero, man. i wish we could turn back the hands of time, so that i can watch his match over and over again. =(

I'm hearing different things now. One scenario says that his wife and son were ill and coughing up blood and that's why Benoit missed his weekend events. They may have died and he couldn't live with himself after that. Another scenario says his wife may have killed their son and he killed her for it.
It's all just shocking and horrifying. I always thought Benoit was such a family man. I know loosing Eddie was tough on him.
I just hope Benoit didn't kill his wife and son.
Anyway you cut it, it's an awful situation.

I don't mean no disrespect, but calling these actors wrestlers on a sports forum is simply not right.

btw, eventhough I simply can't stand that TV circus show, I still knew who Benoit was when I heard the news. it's simply amazing how much useless info you are forced to swallow these days :(

r.i.p.

Actually they r not called wrestlers even inside the WWE, but "superstars".The right way 2 call them is not actors, but entertainers.I have been following this entertainment 4 the past 3 years and he was one of my most-liked persons there(along with the late Eddie Guerrero too)Anyway, it's sad 2 hear that a whole family was found dead, especially 4 such a young kid:(
I just hope too that Chris Benoit didn't kill his family.

Why not? You have more and more legitimate amateur wrestlers going into professional wrestling, so I will be still calling them wrestlers. Kurt Angle was a Olympic gold medalist from Atlanta. So you want me to stop calling him a wrestler just because he signed a deal with professional wrestling company? I don't think so...

And Benoit - even without any career in amateur wrestling - was good enough on the mat and had strong enough background, to deserve calling him a wrestler every single time.

I know pro wrestling is entertainment. However this is a matter of real life we are talking about here. I'm in total disbelief. The CBC Newsworld is saying that Benoit apparently strangled his wife and smothered his son before hanging himself.
The thing is, Benoit on the surface seemed like about the last guy who you'd think would do something like this.
He must have been very depressed to have done such a thing. I know there was the loss of Eddie Guerrero. I don't know what kind of family problems he had. Like I said, on the surface he seemed like such a family guy. I just didn't want to believe he'd kill his kid. Killing his wife was bad enough, but his seven year old son? What could've been going through Benoit's head to do this?

actually, calling that "professional wrestling" is even more depressing than calling those actors (or entertainers) "wrestlers". to me it's simply sad, I sincelery think this branch of show-biz has got almost no positive purpose. the very least they could do is change the name. how would you react if Globetrotters were called professional basketball, while NBA, FIBA and ULEB would be amateurs..

it's probably the steroids that we have 2 blame.
according 2 AP(it stands 4 Associated Press right?):Investigators found anabolic steroids in the house and want to know whether the muscular man was unhinged by the bodybuilding drugs, which can cause paranoia, depression and explosive outbursts known as "roid rage."
So if we look a little deeper the cause of death is more or less the same that caused the deaths of other wrestlers-entertainers,but now it also costed the lives of 2 other innocent people.:(

Wow. (link)

According to the WWE, Benoit sent five text messages to some of his co-workers between 3:51 a.m. and 3:58 a.m. Saturday.

Messages one, three and four read, "My physical address is 130 Green Meadow Lane, Fayetteville, Georgia. 30215."

Message five just gave his address, and message two read, "The dogs are in the enclosed pool area. Garage side door is open."

WWE strongly suggests that it is entirely wrong for speculators to suggest that steroids had anything to do with these senseless acts, especially when the authorities plainly stated there is no evidence that Benoit had steroids in his body, pending the toxicological reports, and that they had no evidence at this time as to the motive for these acts.
