Brandon Roy retires after doctor tells Trail Blazers guard that long-term health risk is too high

It is because of a degenerative knee weakening condition that got the better of Roy. Roy averaged a career 19.0ppg and his best season was in the 2008-09 season where he averaged a 22.6 mark.

Career Highlights

3x: NBA All Star: 2008, 2009, 2010.
2x: All-NBA Team: 2009 All-NBA Second Team, 2010 All-NBA Third Team.
NBA Rookie of the Year: 2007
NBA All-Rookie Team: 2007 NBA All-Rookie First Team.

It is sad as Roy's last and best game was Game 4 against the Dallas Mavericks on the 1st round of the Western Conference Playoff Series. Roy scored 18 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter to help the Trailblazers win 84-82 and tie the series with the Mavericks.

Statements from Brandon Roy, Portland Trailblazers owner Paul Allen and Portland Trailblazers CEO Larry Miller.

BRANDON ROY
"This is a very difficult and painful day. I love the game, I love the Portland Trail Blazers and I love our fans, but after consulting with my doctors, I will seek a determination that I've suffered a career ending injury, pursuant to the rules of the collective bargaining agreement.

"My family and health are most important to me and in the end this decision was about them and my quality of life. I want to thank Paul Allen, Larry Miller, Coach McMillan, the entire Trail Blazers organization and our fans for all of their love and support during my time in Portland. It was a great ride."

PAUL ALLEN
"Like every Blazer fan, I am very sad to learn that Brandon's playing days have ended. Up until Thursday night we were looking forward to seeing him back on the court Friday for the first day of practice.

"I want to personally thank Brandon for all he's done as a Trail Blazer, on and off the court. He is a true All-Star and we all rooted for him as he gave us so many amazing moments during his five years as a Blazer."

LARRY MILLER
"Brandon Roy will always be a Trail Blazer in our hearts and minds. He was an All-Star and a warrior every night that he stepped on the court and gave everything he had to help us win. He was a role model on and off the court, and through his leadership he turned us into a winning franchise once again."

The Portland Trailblazers signed veteran center Kurt Thomas to a two year deal.

Too bad...we'll never see again the Roy and Oden tandem, that also contributed a large part of their injury woes.

I also feel a slight dismay on the Trailblazers not living up to their true potential. It is this RIP City Curse of devastating injuries that have killed the Trailblazers' chances.

It is reported that free agent guard Jamal Crawford is inclined to sign with the Portland Trailblazers. The Sacramento Kings have also made an offer to Crawford.

In the off-season, Crawford stated that he would like to sign with the team that he felt would be appreciated. During the past few months, a number of Trailblazers expressed their willingness to play with Crawford. Also, situation will factor where the retirement of Brandon Roy would mean a drought in scoring. Wesley Matthews is expected to start at shooting guard and signing Crawford will help solve some parts of the scoring problems for the Trailblazers.
