Popovich thinks Nowitzki is bound for Hall of Fame

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich didn't need to see Friday's performance by Dirk Nowitzki to offer an opinion on where the Dallas' forward will end his career.

"He's definitely a Hall of Famer," Popovich said before the game. "He's definitely going to be one of the greatest forwards ever to play the position because he has not only established himself as one of the best players in the league, but he's improved.

"He couldn't get a rebound when he first came in the league. In some ways, he couldn't even get a shot off. Then you think about where he is now, where nobody can guard the guy.

"And not only does he rebound, but he knows where the most important rebounds are. In Games 3 and 4 (of last season's Western Conference semifinals series) at their place, we've got the game in hand, and he goes and gets offensive rebounds in both games. That turned the fortunes of both of those games around."

Nowitzki did nothing to diminish his credentials Friday, scoring 36 points while making 14 of 23 shots. He scored 31 when the Mavericks beat the Spurs on Nov. 24.

"He's a big-time, big-play player on top of being who he is in the first place," Popovich said. "He makes Manu Ginobili-type plays at the end of games. For a seven-footer to do that, that's pretty special."

The Mavs are again the best team in the League. I don't know, either they should win it all, but then again, I hope they'll get eliminated in first PO round, so that Dirk gets a rest and can help the german NT. But I'm afraid he'll be even more tired at EC than he was last year at WC, if they reach the Finals.
But he definately will play at EC this summer if he doesn't get injured, as he said that the Olympic Games are the biggest thing he can reach as a basketball player and he badly wants to qualify with german NT.

He's somewhere between Tom Chambers and Larry Bird. There's a major difference of whoes career he'll be similiar too. Both were great players but only one was a hall-of-famer.

Yes, Nowitzki will be there also imo. And what makes him more special is that he's never turned his back on his national team. Not only he participated in NT, but also he did his best all the time.

I think he should be both in NBA Hall of Fame and in FIBA's Hall of Fame.

Absolutely. He's up there with Sabas, Petrović, Gallis, Kukoč and the others.

I totally agree. He's the the real pro, the sportsman par excellence. Many should follow his example...

Well he does indeed turn up for the NT all the time and does his best and also works hard in the NBA so yes that is correct.

I think everything he's done for the Mavericks in the NBA deserves respect, but what impresses me most is the way he's led the German NT to 2nd and 4th at EC, plus 3rd at WC. I mean, the majority of his teammates were/are no-names in European basketball. And he's showing up each summer, regardless of his physical status.

I'd say he's way past Tom Chambers--he's accomplished so much and still young... He deserves HOF honours and yeah I love his loyalty to the German NT...
