Players that we can have naturalized

Is she good? No updates about her or no highlights… maybe we can do to her that what we want for Ange Kouame.. An exemption to be a local player in the future… unlike mens team that so many medias and distractions, here at womens side, we can do those things w/o any notice… for atleast here… because a talent like Vanessa De Jesus can’t be ignored, but because she is always based in US, we can’t make her a local player… Hence, we can try to Onah, since she will likely fill her 5 year playing years in UAAP.. plus a league that Strong group is building for womens basketball.. we can convince her to stay for her residency and who knows, after more than 5 years, she will be classified as local player for Gilas womens.. A huge help to our size alongside Animam…

Onoh is double double machine for UP.. grab 30 rebounds last season for UP.. good inside presence..

I haven't seen her play, but 30 rebounds in a game is good. Rebounding translates to higher levels.

More importantly, she's young and will be a long-term piece.

I hope that SGA’s plan of having a womens league here will materialize, so that she will stay here after her UAAP stint, and her residency will continue.. we can apply her case in the future as local player.. we badly need another body after Animam.. We can put her at 3x3 events if she is vacant… as far as womens basketball is concerned, we are still developing country.. since the real Gilas women program just start only 2015… I’m sure FIBA can make our request granted for localisation of Onoh, then we can still tap Vannesa De Jesus as our naturalized player in that spot…

Not a PH topic but naturalisation related. I saw 2-3 vids of vloggers not happy that Embiid will play for the US and Thon maker in the South Sudan list of players.
Embiid is a naturalied French and naturalised American. Why are people using him to localise jordan clarkson or jalen gree. Or ron harper jr. Embiid is the np of the US. JC is an NP for us. If ron harper jr gets a passport, he can also play as NP for us. Just like Embiid. But I'm not sure why joel as US team np is a basis to localise players of Filipino decent to be tagged as local.

Thon, and Bol Bol since they are on the same situation, are both born in Sudan(now South Sudan) before becoming refugees to Au and US respectively. Due to refugee laws, they got citizenship of those countries
I dont know if they will play for SS, but technically they are locals and SS can invoke that provision of Fiba that Bahamas used for Eric Gordon. why? Because basketball is not big in South Sudan unlike the PH. Basketballnis the number 1 apoer in PH and there is no existing player i know of, of Pinoy lineage, that can grow the sport in the country more than it is. Son i can't understand why, if Maker or Bol plays for SS, this is unfair to PH. And we don't even know if they do get allowed, if they play as local or NP. Assuming Basketball Australia releases Maker. Bol isn't held by any NSA as far as I know

the good thing nowadays is that many are re-embracing their roots by re-acquiring their Filipino passports.

this would gauge well to those potential hafus that we may tap for future entourage not only in basketball and volleyball but also for other sports discipline.

The demand decreased when the Philippines eased the restrictions and once again allowed the entry of foreign visitors, but there has been sustained interest in dual citizenship, with an average of 5,000 per year since 2022, Abejuela said.

familiar names? Thon Maker.. was granted release by Basketball Australia

From Twitter

Olgun Uluc

Re Thon Maker. He wanted to play for his country of birth (South Sudan), and Basketball Australia wasn’t going to stand in the way of that desire. FIBA then needs to authorize the move: Article 3-22 of the FIBA Internal Regulations allows some grace for a switch from, for example, Australia to South Sudan, if the move is “…in the interest of the development of basketball" in the country.

Thanks! But still, my post is still correct in that Thon was born in SS and became a refugee in AU. It doesnt say if he'll be local or NP for SS. Personally, should be local being born there and only reason he left is due to war. Not his fault. His parents still lives in SS. Which is not same with JC, Green, or either of the Harper bros.

I think basketball is the most popular sport right now in South Sudan… if you look at grassroots, achievements and popularity, basketball is now ahead of football there… look at most of FIBA pages, SSD fans are almost have same appearance of social engagement as the Philippines… did you saw how many SSD fans came to Manila watch their team live or in Juba, whereas every SSD games are like Pacquiao fights here in the Philippines… basketball games there are like festivals… I disagree that basketball is not big in SSD… after Olympics, don’t be surprise if SSD government put basketball as their national sport….

Since he was born in South Sudan, it qualifies him to play as a local. With Australia releasing him, he just need FIBA to authorize the move.

if you are looking at just who watches basketball vs any other sport, sure. but that does not remove the reality that they are war torn country, that they are one of the poorest country in the world, that after the world cup it was confirmed that they dont even have an indoor court to play in.

do you even know if those SS fans who watched are currently living in SS? the team isnt even based there for all we know. Deng and Ivey may go there but lets be real, they dont reside there for long periods or time unlike team owner\leaders of other nations.

same with Bahamas. that country is ran by different gangs locally(exag but i only mean police is next to useless there). the gov there mostly handles international relationship and what little economy they have. if basketball can make even a tiny difference to these countries. give hope to kids that they can achieve something. stop people from hurting other people for an hour or 2, why wouldnt FIBA help them in whatever capacity they can? compare it to the Philippines please. matanda na si JB, lets get Bennie even if he hasnt stayed in the country for a long time or multiple times. no problem. noone watching the PBA? there are other leagues. suya sa basket? there are other sports and even esport to keep us preoccupied. no, PH is not an advance economy but we are nowhere near the economy of either SS or Bahamas. i will not argue how you look at it simply because you are looking at FIBA's action as a fan. but try looking at it from their side with 0 bias to any country. i doubt there can be a rule or policy that is 100% fair to everyone. so you'll stick with what you think is best for all and just case by case favour those you think genuinely need help.

SBP should now also start the road for Ange's exception in FIBA.

You want FIBA to recognise him as a local when local leagues in the Philippines don't recognise him as a local?
that's a nice gesture if they do that.

Better start something,Ivory Coast is sending signals that they might want him in their NT,and the way no one really wants him Gilas,he might feel the writing is on the wall.

Ange's problem is that he's too good for the PBA but unlike Brownlee he isn't good enough to make that of an impact for our NT. He'll never be anything more than a backup by the way things are

Ange had a rough start with Chots system and then got a major injury in practice. Buthe seems to have settled well in Cones system. He starts for his team in France who are now in the playoffs. He is actually doing well. SMC is prioritizing their guys JB and Boatwright. But as I said this is contingent on Kais continued development and Edus good health. We know we cant take Edus good health as a given. Kai has been improving in the B league. Hi level Fiba is a different animal. More physical and higher stakes.

If that's the case, Will SBP granted him a request to transfer? I don't think SBP will allow Ange to transfer... He will also give up his passport too.. Our senate and congress invest their signings, time and more importantly documents to grant him as Naturalized Pinoy... He can still play for us in Asian games or in SEAG BTW...

That's the thing with the NP rules here, e. They play for our country, but they don't get rewarded with status as permanent players for our domestic leagues.

Expanding the league to 14-16 teams is the answer. Why do Japanese are on the rise? Because they played with 2-3 imports almost all the time plus the influx of foreign coaches. For us to avoid the scarcity of quality bigman, 1 import must be 6"5 and below and the other is unlimited height. Also, one import is world import while the other is either FSA ( with PH diploma), naturalized (brownlee, blatche) or Asian Import

This would be like the old PBA Invitational one import is a natural SF and the other a legit C/PF and the local big man will have plenty of time on the court, this is how you elevate the game and players too.If the PBA is smart have 2 more teams, just 2 conference,All Filipino and Invitationals make it a 7 month season with a 2 1/2 months in between for rest and recovery. With 3 1/2 months of basketball each conference, should be plenty of games.Gotta raise the cap too maybe to P800,000/month limit at least.

The thing about Ange is he's a homegrwon talent,if not a local player they should at least make him play as an import in the PBA.He's the backup who probably is better all around than the center at 5.

Only incentive for them is the hefty pay they will get while they play for gilas (RE: Blatche). Pba should allow the home grown fsa to play as locals (or count them as part of the fil-foreign quota per team). We develop them and most of them settle in the country and have regular day jobs and establish families.

I'm OK with Japeth being a reserve for now, because after AJ, JB, and to an extent Kai, that's it for interior defense. Japeth will be valuable if AJ goes down.
But Japeth's 37. We'll need a successor as he ages, especially considering that Bennie Boatwright will be the replacement NP, so we'll need a good defender next to Bennie most of the time. Maybe someone like Kemark Carino can help, but Mason Amos and Justin Arana could be more popular picks. Mason, fine because of shooting, but Arana looks like a right-handed Ian Sangalang.

Wasn't he supposed to be retired from NT duties for like 2 years now? Maybe they should have groomed someone who'll eventually replace him ages ago. They can't just unretire him every tournament.. I don't see anyone who can help out AJ and Kai on defence maybe except Philips and Balti ( well Balti from 3 years ago. He admittedly looks very different nowadays)

That's the exact reason why I've been clamoring for a decent defender at 4/5 as our NP after JB (4 so at least he can play alongside Kai, 5 in case AJ gets injured and Kai needs a backup center). That, or Ange, even if he's the backup. We don't have much in the way of eligible interior defenders. If AJ is hurt and Kai sits, we risk giving up too many points, maybe at a rate of every other possession.

Boogie ellis, harper jr., kamaka hepa and SBP rather get boatwright.. harper jr. Is your best wing player you can have..

Me too. Then SMC gave us a guy who's weaknesses are defence and rebounding. It might not look much now but these moves might cost us in the future.

NBA standout Kyle Kuzma says he is OPEN to the idea of playing for GILAS alongside Jordan Clarkson and represent the Philippines in international competition.

Not sure if he plays alongside since that is impossible, but he would be an ideal replacement.... If SMC can pony up the money and make him commit
