Play As One - Charlotte Bobcats Thread

Over the years, Pat Riley and Alonzo Mourning are jeered upon. I don't blame the fans though.

Lol. Zo originally played for the former Charlotte Hornets. In his rookie year, he gave a dagger to Boston Celtics on their play-off match up.

Jordan Leading Dream Team to Hall of Fame

The 1992 gathering of basketball’s best at the occasion of the Barcelona Summer Olympics wasn’t Michael Jordan’s first gold medal in Olympic competition. Jordan led a squad of collegiate USA Olympians in 1984 to reclaim the Gold on an international field that was changing. US Olympic basketball teams dominated the top of the medal stand from Munich in 1936 to Mexico City in 1968. That domination ended when the Soviets knocked the US out of the 1972 title game in Munich with a controversial finish that remains in dispute. The US reclaimed the Gold at Montreal in 1976. The US boycott of the Moscow Olympics in 1980 allowed the world to hit the reset button that snapped the US-Russian lockstep at the top, when Yugoslavia topped the Russians on their home turf. The Soviets repaid the US for their boycott by skipping the 1984 games in Los Angeles. Michael Jordan led the last US group of amateurs to a Gold medal by averaging 17 points per game. But a much anticipated US-Yugoslavia Gold medal match-up was spoiled by a Spanish upset of the Yugoslavs in the semifinals. Jordan led the way as the US crushed Spain in the finals. A young USA team made up of future NBA stars David Robinson and Mitch Richmond fell short of the Gold at Seoul in 1988. The Americans lost to Russia by six in the semifinals. But Yugoslavia laid claim to their second Gold medal in eight years by once again beating the Russians.

A year later, FIBA approved the use of NBA players in Olympic medal play-setting the stage for the assemblage of the greatest team to ever set foot on a basketball court anywhere in the world. The USA “Dream Team” charged into the 1992 summer games in Barcelona as an overwhelming favorite. European and South American teams had long sent their professionals, but the US was hamstrung by being held to purely amateur basketball entries for as long as basketball was an Olympic sport. Michael Jordan returned to the Olympic theatre leading a star studded roster that included Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Jordan’s Chicago Bulls teammate Scottie Pippen and John Stockton. The Dream Team averaged 117 points in eight games and defeated its opponents by an average margin of 43.75 points. Jordan’s 24 clinched the gold for the Dream Team in the title game against Croatia.

The point had been proven, that the US continued to set the standard for basketball worldwide. The demise of the Soviet Union set forth a change in the playing field that lined up to compete with the US. But more than anything, Michael Jordan’s dominance of the NBA extended basketball’s reach to the world. To “be like Mike” served as the inspiration to a new generation of global players that helped carry the game all over the globe. New players have entered the scene from China, Spain, Argentina, Germany and Brazil since then.

A year ago, Michael Jordan was enshrined in the Naismith Hall of Fame and a year later, he was in attendance once again as Jordan was a member of the first USA Men's Olympic Basketball Team composed of Professional Players from the NBA.

Perhaps the greatest TEAM USA Lineup of all time, joining in induction the greatest Amateur USA Men's Olympic Basketball Team in the 1960 Olympics consisted of stars like Jerry West and Oscar Robertson.

Interactive Schedule | Downloadable Regular Season Schedule (PDF)
The Charlotte Bobcats, in preparation for the 2010-11 season, will continue their annual trend of spreading preseason contests around the Carolinas with one game in Fayetteville, N.C., versus Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder and a second game in Columbia, S.C., against Ben Wallace and the Detroit Pistons.
Following the Bobcats week-long training camp in Wilmington, N.C., the eight-game preseason slate begins on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Cleveland. The schedule also includes games against New Orleans and Atlanta at Time Warner Cable Arena, as well as road exhibitions versus Orlando, Milwaukee and Miami. The Bobcats preseason matchup against the new-look Heat will be televised live on Fox Sports Carolinas.
When the Bobcats tip off on Oct. 6 in Fayetteville against the Thunder, it will mark the team’s second time playing at Crown Coliseum. The Oct. 16 contest versus the Pistons will represent the Bobcats third preseason game in the state of South Carolina and second in Columbia’s Colonial Life Arena on the campus of the University of South Carolina.
"We’ve always emphasized making this the Carolinas’ NBA team by taking training camp and preseason games to markets throughout North and South Carolina," said Bobcats Sports & Entertainment President and Chief Operating Officer Fred Whitfield. "That emphasis is even stronger today given our new owner’s Carolina roots, and we look forward to spending time with our fans in Wilmington, Fayetteville and Columbia this fall."
On Wednesday, Oct. 20, the Bobcats will host the 7th annual Cool School Field Trip, presented by Jordan Brand, with an 11:00 am tipoff against the Hornets. The game is a reward for middle school students, teachers and administrators from across the Carolinas who display outstanding achievement and character in the classroom. Every student in attendance will receive a workbook to be completed throughout the course of the game with the help of in-arena messages, clues and interviews.
All preseason games with the exception of the 11:00 am contest against New Orleans will air over the Bobcats radio network on WFNZ 610 AM.
Season tickets are still available by calling (704) BOBCATS. In addition to full season tickets, the "Pick 20" partial plan that allows buyers to purchase Opening Night and 19 more of their choosing is now available. Marquee matchups with the Lakers, Heat, Celtics and Magic can be selected as part of that plan.

Diaw Scores Team-High 15 Points for France in Loss to Team USA
August 15, 2010
Diaw Gallery | Box Score (PDF)
NEW YORK (AP)—Even the old guy found something new in the young Americans’ debut.
"First time I’ve been in the Garden and the people have been cheering for me," Chauncey Billups said.
Billups scored 17 points, nine in an early third-quarter flurry that broke open the game, and the United States beat France 86-55 on Sunday in its only home exhibition before the world championships.
Rudy Gay had 19 points to lead the Americans, who started slowly in their first tuneup before running away from the French in the second half. Billups, one of the few players on the roster with international experience, made three 3-pointers while playing just 15 minutes.
The 33-year-old Billups, who played for the U.S. in the 2007 Olympic qualifier, expected some nerves from a roster that includes five 21-year-olds.
"Now you’re really playing a real game," he said. "You’re on TV and it doesn’t mean that much but internally it does because we’re trying to work toward something."
Kevin Durant added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Americans, who open the world championships on Aug. 28 against Croatia.
The Bobcats Boris Diaw scored 15 points for France, which surrendered a 16-4 run early in the third quarter after staying close with the Americans in the first half.
"The second half I just thought we just settled down," U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "You don’t have to be perfect. Every shot you take doesn’t have to go in."
The Americans trimmed their roster to 13 earlier Sunday when they cut Jeff Green and JaVale McGee. They final cut will come sometime in Europe, perhaps not until they have completed their exhibition schedule.
They leave Monday for Madrid, where the schedule gets tougher. They face Lithuania and defending world champion Spain while there, then travel to Athens for a game against Greece.
"We left off on a good note," guard Derrick Rose said.
The opener of a doubleheader at Madison Square Garden was the first international game for much of the U.S. roster. The Americans will send a young team to Turkey after all 12 players from the 2008 Olympic gold medalists decided to take the summer off.
"A lot of the big name guys are not here, so people are kind of counting us out," Durant said. "So we definitely have something to prove and tonight was a good start."
That has left an athletic squad that features Tyson Chandler as the only center. He played with Billups on the team three years ago, but most of the team is much younger.
"It is a young team," Diaw said. "Chauncey Billups is the daddy of the team but everyone else is pretty young."
France was down only seven after getting the opening basket of the second half before Billups’ 3-pointer gave the Americans their first double-digit lead. After a basket by Chandler, Billups made another 3 for a 47-34 advantage with 7:46 left in the third.
Consecutive three-point plays by Billups and Durant pushed it to 55-36 with 5:05 to go in the period. The lead ballooned to 70-46 early in the fourth after two straight powerful dunks by Gay.
"I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time," Gay said. "It’s our last time playing on U.S. soil."
France is also short-handed this summer. Its best player, Tony Parker, sat courtside along with wife Eva Longoria Parker and another French player, new Knicks forward Ronny Turiaf. Joakim Noah, also sitting out, also attended the game.
The French still have NBA players such as Diaw and Nicolas Batum(notes), who scored 11.
Krzyzewski went with Billups, Durant, Rajon Rondo and Andre Iguodala to start the game. Kevin Love, who missed a day of practice this week with a calf injury, and Russell Westbrook didn’t play until the fourth quarter.
The game was tied at 16 after a first quarter in which the Americans shot only 37.5 percent and committed five turnovers. Durant missed his first five shots but finally got a pair of dunks midway through the second period. Rondo had the last two U.S. baskets of the half, extending the lead to 39-30 at the break.

Why the Charlotte Bobcats should not be overlooked

Charlotte Bobcats head coach Larry Brown will be 70 years old before training camp begins for the 2011 season. Brown, in his third year with the franchise, is already the team's all-time winningest coach and last season led the club to its first winning record and playoff berth since entering the NBA in 2004.

The Bobcats, however, would ultimately be swept by the Orlando Magic in the first round of the playoffs. But in a surprise to many, the team showed true grit only losing by an average margin of 9 points, which included only one double-digit defeat.

For perspective on the Bobcats' surprising success against the Magic as a seventh seed, it's important to note that Orlando eventually became Eastern Conference finalists and demolished (series sweep) the third-seeded Atlanta Hawks in the second round by a NBA record 25-point margin of victory.

The Bobcats have improved their victory total in the Hall of Fame coach's first two seasons in the Queen City and in typical Brown fashion he has transformed the team with a complete roster overhaul.

The only two players remaining from the 2008 season are All-Star forward Gerald Wallace and reserve center Nazr Mohammed. A third, swingman Matt Carroll, was reacquired in an offseason trade after spending part of past two seasons as a member of the Dallas Mavericks.

This summer Raymond Felton, the team's starting point guard since 2006, signed a two-year free agent deal with the New York Knicks. Felton averaged 13.3 points and 6.4 assists in 399 career games with Charlotte. To date, the team hasn't replaced Felton with a big name acquisition although rumors continue to swirl that the club is open to making a deal.

Despite the influx of new players during Brown's tenure and Felton's departure without an equal replacement the Bobcats are still primed for a second straight playoff trip in the rapidly improving Eastern Conference --- and here's why.

Stephen Jackson is an All-Star talent that will be entering his first full season with the franchise. Jackson was acquired by Charlotte in a late 2009 deal with the Golden State Warriors and in 72 games with the club last season averaged 21.1 points and 5.1 rebounds.

Brown expects an even larger role from the ten year veteran this season that goes beyond filling up the box score with just points. With Felton's departure, the expectation is that Jackson will be able to relieve pressure on the point guard trio of D.J. Augustin, Shaun Livingston and Sherron Collins by also serving as a creator of offensive opportunities for his teammates.

Since 2008 Jackson has quietly averaged 20.5 points, 5 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. Compare that production to Hawks All-Star guard Joe Johnson, who averaged 21.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists last season and its clear the Bobcats have a true gamer at two-guard.

The 32 year old Jackson, who notched eleven games of 30+ points in 2010, has also been challenged by Brown to lose weight before training camp in order to fully handle the two-guard responsibilities against the league's quicker guards.

Another reason the Bobcats' playoff positioning will remain intact is the continued development of Wallace who's coming off a career-year. Wallace is the lone remaining player from the Bobcats' inaugural season.

At 28, Wallace was selected to his first All-Star appearance, and set career-highs in games played (76) and rebounds per game (10.2). He was also named to the All-Defensive first team.

Jackson's presence in the lineup allows Wallace the ability to slip into more of a secondary scorer role, where he appears to be more comfortable, while anchoring the team's defensive efforts. During the 2010 season this was evident as he was the only player in the league to finish with at least 600 rebounds, 100 steals and 80 blocks.

Charlotte also features a still developing young core that will be expected to make significant strides next season.

Augustin struggled tremendously in his second year after posting respectable numbers as a rookie. By the end of last season, Brown's confidence in the former University of Texas product had dipped considerably. Even with those struggles, the organization is hoping that Augustin's disappointing campaign sparks the worth ethic needed to return to his rookie year form and handle the starting the point guard duties if needed.

If not, the team signed former lottery pick Shaun Livingston in free agency. Livingston almost had his career cut short due to a gruesome knee injury in 2007, but showed promise that he's redefined his game enough to help offset the impacts of the impairment.

As a starter for the Washington Wizards during the final month of last season, Livingston averaged 15.5 points and dished out 6.3 assists showing the lateral mobility of years past.

Power forward Tyrus Thomas is also poised for a breakthrough this season after posting averages of 10.1 points and 6.6 rebounds in 25 games with the Bobcats. Charlotte re-signed the LSU product to a five-year $40 million deal with the hopes he could not only break into the starting lineup (didn't start a game for brown), but also demonstrate the skills that made him a lottery pick on a more consistent basis.

From a scheduling standpoint, five of the Bobcats' first ten contests are against teams that finished 2010 with a subpar .500 record (Indiana, New Jersey, Detroit, Toronto and Washington).

The matchups continue to look favorable as the team's longest road trip (six games) from January 25 - February 2, includes four games against teams from the Pacific Division, in which Charlotte went 8-2 against last season.

The Bobcats, who set a franchise record home mark going 31-10, will play 22 of their first 41 contests in Charlotte and although nineteen of the team's final 41 games will be on the road seven of the final 11 contests will take place at home which will be important for the late season playoff push / seed positioning.

While the Bobcats remain clearly behind their Southeast Division rival Miami HEAT, Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks and still face huge concerns at the point guard position, the current talent level coupled with a veteran savvy coach like Brown makes a second straight playoff trip an attainable goal.

Good tidings for the Charlotte Bobcats

Good tidings for the Charlotte Bobcats

This will be the first full season where Michael Jordan will the "hands-on" owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. I have an article with a great news for all the Bobcats fans who are faithful to the team: :)

Bobcats' success brings a bounty of season-ticket sales
Jordan's takeover of team also helps bring fans and corporate sponsors.

The Charlotte Bobcats' best season yet has quickly translated into one of the NBA's fastest growing season-ticket bases. And the team's list of corporate sponsors also continues to grow rapidly.

The Bobcats, who reached the playoffs for the first time in their six-year history last spring, have renewed 91percent of their season ticket holders and sold 1,575 new season tickets for the 2010-11 season, which begins in October.

Both those numbers are in the top 10 in the 30-team league, according to Bobcats president Fred Whitfield, who got the news at a recent NBA executives meeting. The Bobcats have never been in the top 20 of the league in either of those categories, Whitfield said.

Whitfield said the Bobcats had a 71percent renewal rate this time last year and had sold fewer than 400 new season tickets. They sold about 7,000 season tickets overall last season and expect to go well past the 8,000 mark this season.

It appears the bump in sales can be traced to the team's play last season and a hands-on approach by new majority team owner Michael Jordan.

"We repositioned ourselves," said Pete Guelli, the team's chief sales and marketing officer. "How the team performed during the regular season, then Michael buying the team, then making the playoffs - it was the perfect storm."

The Bobcats' average attendance of 15,824 in the 19,000-seat Time Warner Cable Arena ranked 22nd in the league last season. That was a 10 percent increase from 2008-09, the largest increase of any team in the NBA's Eastern Conference, Whitfield said.

The Bobcats have brought in 40 new corporate sponsors - adding to the 53 they had last season. Newest on board are Husqvarna and CPI Security to "significant, multi-year" deals, according to Whitfield.

Whitfield said the sponsors are part of a package that includes other events at the arena - including concerts and minor-league hockey games - that has the arena booked more than 150 days a year. The Bobcats - who manage and operate the arena - recently signed with AEG Facilities, a booking company. that helped the arena land summer concerts by Paul McCartney and Justin Bieber.

"AEG has really helped us 'un-level' the playing field with our competition at places like the Greensboro Coliseum, RBC Center (in Raleigh) and (Winston-Salem's) Joel Coliseum," said Whitfield.

Things look great with all these sponsors coming on board and the great turn out of purchases of both pre-season and 2010 - 2011 Season games.

Breaking Down Bobcats 2010-11 Schedule

August 18, 2010 by Scott Lauer

NBAE / Getty Images

The Bobcats schedule has been released for the upcoming season, so let’s break it down from the start.

October/November
The hunt for a second straight playoff berth commences in Dallas on October 27. After dealing Tyson Chandler and Alexis Ajinca to the Mavs for Erick Dampier, Matt Carroll and Eduardo Najera, Charlotte will seek its first-ever win against the Mavs. It’s an interesting twist to open the season out of conference.

The Bobcats will begin the year with four of five on the road, including games in Milwaukee, New Jersey and Detroit. Their home opener is on October 29 against the revamped Indiana Pacers, who just acquired Darren Collison in a four-team trade including New Orleans, New Jersey and Houston.

Of the opening 10 games, outside of the Pacers clash, they are all either on the road, or at home against winning teams from a year ago. That said, the next batch of 10 games appears to soften – with road games against the Heat and Bucks potentially proving to be the most challenging in that band.

December/January
If only games could be played on paper…because in the month of December, the only road game vs. a bonafide winner from a season ago, is on the 17th in Atlanta. Additionally, our longest stretch happily grounded in Charlotte comes from December 21 to January 4. That includes a New Year’s Eve home game against Stephen Curry’s Golden State Warriors at 3 p.m. – leaving plenty of time to toast 2011 afterward.

The freshly minted potential dynasty in Miami will be showcased at Time Warner Cable Arena on January 3 (I’d recommend getting your Pick 20 Plan or Season Tickets now if you’d like to see it). LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh will make two trips here, including another visit on February 4. As for Cleveland, we see them for the first time on December 27 in the post-LeBron era.

This marks the first time that the Bobcats will not be hosting a Martin Luther King Day special. We’ll be in Philadelphia on January 17th for a 2 p.m. start.

Schedules have a tendency to even themselves out, so as we alluded to the fact that December provides the home cooked meals, January translates into plenty of air time around the country including our longest excursion out west – a six-game trip beginning in Sacramento on the 25th.

February/March
In what I feel will be the most challenging homestand of the year, Charlotte hosts Miami, Dallas, and Boston in a four-night stretch from February 4-7. That is eye-popping, first-class star power entering our building that week. The Celtics signed a pair of O’Neal’s – Jermaine and Shaquille – to bolster their front line and make up for the loss of Rasheed Wallace, who retired. It’s a Bobcats team that dominated home games to the tune of 31 wins last year, however.

A week after that period ends, Kobe Bryant and the defending champion Lakers are here for a February 14 game.

Following a trip to Chicago on the 15th, a one-week span arrives without action, during the all-star break.

Late in the month, a string of four consecutive road games gets initiated with a trip to Orlando, succeeded by games in Denver, LA (Lakers) and Portland, taking us into early March. Another series of four-straight away games comes in the middle of March (in Toronto, Houston, Oklahoma City, and San Antonio).

April
The final month of the regular season features quite a balanced conclusion to the schedule. Games will alternate from road to home for those eight games heading into the playoffs. The last game is on the 13th, at home vs. Atlanta.

Notes
*There will only be one Thursday game and three Sunday games played.
*Back-to-back’s this year? 21, which is fewer than last year.
*There are two games scheduled on ESPN or ESPN 2. We’ll be on the Deuce against Houston on November 26 , and the regular season finale vs. Atlanta will be on ESPN
*For more on the recently released schedule, listen to our Podcats broadcast here on bobcatsbreak.com.
*All games are broadcast on the Charlotte Bobcats Radio Network, and flagship station WFNZ.

High school

Wallace attended Childersburg High School in Childersburg, Alabama, where he had a very successful career. For his senior season efforts he was named the Naismith Prep Player of the Year, an honor given to the best high school basketball player.
College

Wallace attended the University of Alabama for one season before declaring himself eligible for the 2001 NBA Draft.
NBA

Sacramento Kings

In three seasons with the Sacramento Kings, Wallace rarely played, but in the brief appearances he made himself known for his versatility and extraordinary athleticism. In the 2002 Slam Dunk Contest, Wallace finished second to his future teammate and two-time winner Jason Richardson.
Charlotte Bobcats

In 2004, Wallace was drafted by the Charlotte Bobcats in their expansion draft. Wallace started immediately for the club, and went on to have a season of averaging 11.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.3 blocks a game. He continued to improve in 2005–06, before getting injured in January, averaging 14.5 points and 7 rebounds, and ranking in the top 10 in the NBA in field goal percentage (54.142), blocks (2.19), and steals per game (2.44). Since the NBA began counting blocks as a statistic in 1973, only two other players (David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon) in league history have averaged over 2.0 blocks and 2.0 steals per game in a single season.
Wallace is known for his somewhat reckless style of play that leads to his frequent injuries.[1] For this, he has earned the nickname "Crash".[2] He missed a total of 39 games in his first two years with the Bobcats, but his energetic and sometimes dangerous behavior that may have caused his injuries was also what contributed to his gaudy defensive stats. Coach Bernie Bickerstaff said of Wallace "Gerald can only play one way and be effective. Energy -- that's his game." In 2006, Wallace attempted to refine his game in order to avoid being injured, and as a result his numbers suffered. The first month of the season, Wallace had only five total blocks (an average of 0.3 per game) and his averages were down across the statline from 2005. Wallace improved his play in the second month of the season, but he went down with a separated shoulder in a December game against the Indiana Pacers. When he returned, Wallace continued his fine play finishing the season averaging 18.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block in 72 games.

Wallace appeared opposite Tim Duncan in the March 2008 "SLAM-UP" centerfold for SLAM Magazine.
Wallace suffered a Grade 3 concussion on February 23, 2008 after taking an unintentional elbow to the face from Sacramento's Mikki Moore.[2] It was his fourth concussion in as many seasons with the Bobcats.[2] It was not clear when he would return,[2] although Grade 3 concussions are defined by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons as ones that "involve post-traumatic amnesia for more than 24 hours or unconsciousness for more than five minutes. Players who sustain this grade of brain injury should be sidelined for at least one month, after which they can return to play if they are asymptomatic for one week."[3] He returned later on in the season, finishing the year with a new career high in points, assists, and minutes.
He suffered a partially collapsed lung and a fractured rib after being flagrantly fouled while driving for a layup by Los Angeles Lakers' Andrew Bynum on January 27, 2009 and was forced to miss seven games. He also was unable to fly and instead crossed the United States en route back to Charlotte by bus.[4].
Since the departure of Emeka Okafor, Wallace has been captain of the Bobcats. Wallace is also the only Bobcat ever to score 30 points and 10 rebounds in 2 consecutive games[citation needed] On January 28, 2010, Gerald Wallace was selected to play in the 2010 NBA All-Star game in Dallas,[5] becoming the first Charlotte Bobcat to do so. Wallace was also selected to participate in the 2010 NBA All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest. On February 10, 2010 Wallace was selected to the 2010-2012 USA Basketball Men's National Team to represent the United States in the 2010 FIBA World Championship along with a possible trip with the team to the 2012 Olympics.[6] In the first ever playoff game for the Bobcats, Wallace's 25 was a single game scoring record for the Bobcats until game 2 when it was broken by 2 points when Stephen Jackson scored 27.
On May 5, 2010, Wallace was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team.[7]

The Charlotte Bobcats is set to sign free agent center and former first overall draft pick Kwame Brown.

Sources said that Erick Dampier will be waived, meaning Dampier's $13 Million Non-Guaranteed deal will be written off the Bobcat's roster payroll on which Dampier could re-sign for less or sign for another team with a new contract term.

And there are some reports that Bobcats are planning to get Richard Jefferson. I have yet to confirm this news.
