Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

And Chot, historically, has no plan B against zones. I hope he learned something in his matchup with San Miguel (which zoned a lot).

Better watch how the Italians play. They basically played the DDO but they are taller, faster, stronger and more skilled.

I don't really the offensive for now. What is important is his defensive sets. If he has still a poor PNR, PNP or perimeter defense, this Gilas is doomed. Foreign teams are not shooting bricks like most PBA players do.

His defense is actually decent. His TNT team did well on defense last All-Filipino. Closing driving lanes, and rotating to shooters. He took a page from Tab on that one. I hope he translates that to the FIBA setting.

Exactly, PBA is not FIBA and vice versa. What works in the PBA does not necessarily mean that it will work in FIBA. For one, players that they are going to face are more mobile, quicker and have higher percentage from deep.

Assuming the players he wants will be available (with a healthy Aj edu and hopefully either or both JC and kouame playing as locals), and with even longer prep time than what he had in 2014, yes, we might surprise a lot of NTs again. I won’t be surprised if it suddenly turns out that remy Martin actually has the documents to play as a local. Well, I was shocked about tab stepping out too, but we have to move on. I believe there are still good things to look forward too

At least there are some good things to look forward to, like some PBA players becoming available for main tournaments. I just hope he doesn't shake the foundation of what Tab built, and keeps on finding young players for the windows, so we can be ready to compete even after 2023, maybe beyond.

I mean what did he do to beat SMB Zone???

The only one i remember clearly is they took advantage of poor pnr defense of SMB Bigs like JMF

According to his words. They will.

But I need to see more action than words now.lol

And Chot needs to upgrade his coaching staff, im hoping he could hire a foreign coach with fiba experience focusing on defensive game plan. But not possible coz he has josh and aris as his asst coaches lol.

Yea, he sorely needs a defensive coordinator that's familiar with Tab's schemes, and could drill the players to rotate on defense.

We have a defensive identity under Tab. Let's not break it.

Snow at the end of Spin POV program in YT practically spelling out/insinuating that Tab is earning from the Gilas players's exodus to B. League, and that's why he was removed. with Matt Nieto, Bulanadi, Rey Suerte on their way to B. League.

i dont agree with Snow, and that's not proven. who cares if Gilas players play in a FIBA-equipped league. this is really a corporate/HR squabble rather than democratizing basketball from its plantation overlords.

if HR and piracy is the issue, then the powers-that-be in basketball shouldn't have made scarce the player availability to Gilas in the 1st place. now that there is a system in place to bypass these shenanigans, they suddenly remove Tab, the instigator. i say f*ck them. when finally someone has the balls to innovate and disrupt the system, they first place reactionary clauses, and now they remove who they think led the revolution. all of young ballers, if capable, dont go the the slavers that is the PBA.

If Tab has a hand in having his wards play in the B-league, then kudos to him. He actually cares for his players

Yeah, we need to see action. If he really wants to focus on the younger players, he'd look for more younger players from the provinces, UAAP/NCAA schools, and line them up for much of the FIBA WC qualifying windows. That will lay the foundation of the players that will compete for us beyond 2023. We will never get an opportunity like this again.

I agree, talk is cheap. They better walk the talk.

Juan deserves his second chance. He’s the first player I thought of with this news of Coach Tab “stepping down”. He’s available and I think he’s itching to don the Gilas jersey again. With the unavailability of the UAAP guys, any player that has a live chance of making it to the WC 2023 roster should be considered for the windows.

I ain’t putting much weight on Juan’s dismal B2 stint. I’ve read that he had a falling out with his coach, and given his reputation, I believe there’s some truth to it. I just hope he had learned his lesson, albeit the hard way. With Coach Chot at the helm, he’d suffer worse if he goes full diva. Coach Chot benches his naturalized player in a very important game (Douthit vs Korea) if he sees fit.

Hope Juan succeeds with this version of Gilas as a combo guard. Hope he can succeed, and also that he had learned his lesson. Honor and excellence, I hope he keeps those in mind.

Did Tab do his job a little too well? Now we got half the Gilas lineup playing overseas.

I'm all for that, as long as our players are improving, anyway if they stayed here they'd probably won't be available since they are in the PBA
