Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

^
So essentially for 2022 the following have to show up for Gilas and demonstrate they belong in the 2023 World Cup team

PG Kiefer, Dalph
SG Parks
SF
PF /Center AJ Edu

Essentially the Asia cup is the last tryouts to see if new additions are necessary to fit into existing group from last year.
No player with the exception of Clarkson can just hugot in last minute and show up in August 2023 and expect to get a spot

Additional - Sean Dave Ildefonso

Yeah! These four + Dave are the necessary added pieces, IMO.
If they performed better and within at least expectations of CTB, who among the remaining ones should be removed?

For me, the nietos, either sj & or rj, bulanadi, and tungcab are dispensable. CHIU can be an alternate.

Reason - what the nietos and sj can offer, kiefer can also do, and in a much higher level. Dalph for me is still a better talent than the nietos and sj. Parks is an obvious upgrade to all the dispensables and as to Edu, as long as he is healthy, he is an obvious shoo-in.

Dwight is in even if he doesnt show up for Gilas? How about Heading?

It's not who was mostly starting but who was getting the most minutes per position in 2021 Gilas games . Not avg , but litterarally most total accumulated minutes, obviously the ones who suited up in rosters would get more minutes

Yes Dwight can not play for Gilas in 2022, and in early 2023 can show up and will be selected .
As to Heading , if no other new SG Shows up in 2022 and performs well , to overtake Heading in the pecking order.
Then yes if Heading shows up in 2023 he would have an advantage over others simply for what he has demonstrated in 2021.
These are just my takes , of course can be wrong

Oh before people mistake me , Kai is a shoe in for 2023 WC , he ca n litterarally just show up in the WC. But of course it would really help with chemistry if he played more Gilas games thus year

Exceptions guidelines
1. # of years Residency in county
2. #of years basketball heritage (where does he play) in the Philippines

Of course in the context of age , how many years removed from 16 birthday, the farther he gets passport , Residency and domestic play from 16 the less unlikely

That's what it comes down to, essentially 19 yrs is cut-off of start of Residency and domestic play in Philippines. If passport after 16, player has to play college in the Philippines. Period.

Here is cheating for you, he faked his age to go under 16 years old , and lusot sa Hagop u16 rule
https://www.basketballnetwork.net/the-mystery-of-the-nba-player-who-faked-his-identity/

Daya talaga , Arsen crossed the border into Turkey at 18 years old but then went missing, never showing up again. All the documents about Arsen Ilyasov simply vanished.
But only a month later, a person would go to the Turkish authorities and say he forgot to register his 15-year old son.

Basically Like Greg Slaughter. Probably in the future, we hopefully can except

La Salle"s Phillips Brothers
Ateneo"s Chris Koon
Kyle Gamber (?)

But each player's exception process, there is a fee right? Idk if we are willing to pay for it

Lmao. Cheating at its finest.

At least we are playing by the rules. Even if we dont agree

Well, Governors' Cup suspended indefinitely. Hay, nako.

Only took Christmas and a few dumbasses to get Metro Manila to Alert Level 3.

Let us look on the bright side.

At least pba players and uaap/ncaa players will be available for gilas invitation.hehe.

I think we at ibn care more in National Team than our pro leagues.lol

Oo nga, no. Hahahahaha. But I'd give priority to the collegiate players for the windows. Heck, even in the juniors division, if they're old enough. It's in the main tournaments where we may need PBA players.

I hope Coach Tab will invite more prospects.

The pool so far is lacking in talent imo.

But I am not sure if they are still inviting.

Invite Raven Cortez and Kevin Quiambao again. Wala naman n cguro academics reasons. hehe

I think it's just start of the 2nd trimester in La Salle by February, near the FIBA qualifiers. I hope they can accept the Gilas invitations this time. It's a golden opportunity for them to improve and maybe expand their games.

Other talents that can be considered are Aldous Torculas, Cholo Anonuevo, Evan Nelle, Ice Hontiveros, Jordi GDL, Jared Abadam, JB Bahio, Jonnel Policarpio, Anton Eusebio, Lowell Briones, probably Kobe Demisana, Ramon Salvoro, Seven Gagate.

Yes and the player should be worth it to actually use. It's not a wholesale thing . I would say we can get 1 player excepted every 2 years. So must choose wisely

Still selling this after Kouame didnt get his exemption? Cant act certain when things with FIBA are more about politics than clear cut rules. Because again they could just write clear cut rules but refuse to probably because of politics.

Not selling anything or arguing rules are justified, but simply stating existing situation of rules and application, these are not my opinions, they're litterarally explicitly stated in the FiBA rule book for guidelines for exemption. Additionally the context of the exceptions is obviously the U16 rule , so yes age does matter when one establishes residency and basketball experience heritage. It's explicitly there written in context of the U16 rule, furthermore it is how decisions previously have been based on.
Just stating both existing guidelines and actual practice

After more than 12 years since implementation of the rule, while at the start their was inconsistencies, now it's pretty much is consistent now. Of course the exceptions will always be limited in number as expected.

Where in the FIBA rule book is your 19 yr old cutoff? Unless things have change, pretty sure that exists nowhere.

I admit guidelines do not have a definitive quantitative cutoff age, but is explicitly communicated within context, that age matters , when start of # of years residency and heritage basketball commences .
Additionally precedence of approved exceptions are almost all for players who started residency and domestic play as teenagers.
We're fooling ourselves and ignoring the intent of the guidelines if we insist that age when passport, Residency and local play happened does not matter.. It absolutely does matter and is explicitly expressed in the guidelines.
No one can honestly say that a player who started his basketball heritage in the country in his mid 20s has the same basketball heritage as one who started playing locally as a teenager, too obvious.
2nd , of course if residency starts as a teenager rather than mid 20s , one is logically going to have more residency years in the country.

This is explicitly clear and obvious.

Again I'm not justifying that the rules don't require better and more explicit definitive metrics, but just stating what is currently communicated in intent as.drafted and applied . And it's clear age matters ! The overriding rule (U16) which exception guidelines were written is age based , that in itself is obvious.

Note the NBA uses 19 years old as minimum age for eligibility, so 19 years old while not explicitly mentioned. Is a reasonable age cuttoff to secure passport , start residency and gain local play . Technically Illaysova, Slaughter, King etc all started local basketball at 18 years old or earlier
Interestingly 18 years old is the example Tab always uses as an illustration of an exception

The Laura guy spamming is annoying..

How the practice of exceptions are applied and approved over time has established some consistency.
The reality is the U16 rule with how the exceptions are applied are now well and throughly established and accepted. Unfortunately for the Philippines the case for change is litterarally non existing.

Kouame's case weakness is his granting of passport late (22 yrs old ?). Our naturalization rules hurt us.
However one of the strengths of his case is were host of the WC (cannot deny this advantage)

I'm talking in general here , so let's not cite extraordinary outliners like Jawato which isn't the norm for exceptions

Summary of exceptions

Summary of exceptions

The unwritten rule "generally/normally " for exceptions is
Must secure the following before turning 19 yrs old
1. Passport
2 Residency in country
3. Commennce Domestic competition play

All the other factors (blood relationship etc) while add to points for case are NoT requirements

Obviously at time of decision of approval, # of years should have been completed prior to approval

At least Gamber's Gilas-eligible, so we can take him off the list.
