Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

  • Thread starter Thread starter IPC2
  • Start date Start date
I think this is one of the few perks of Pba being reluctant on lending players for a long significant time.

We are forced to tap the college players who were all available due to their respective league's suspension

And as a result, their development has been great. They got exposed to higher level competition now, and some players are playing new positions. Plus, they're better prepared on defense.

I would hope for a Tall Shooter 4 like maybe Kevin Quiambao. If we are going 4 out, 1 in.

(I think AJ Edu will not play, and maybe wait for his 100% recovery)

And yes, After seeing how Gilas beat Korea fair and square twice last year, We are really a contender for the gold

This 8- man or 9 man rotation thing is really popular.

Like former nba coach pat riley said, " Use eight, rotate 7, play 6, trust 5" in the game that matters.(playoffs)

So, the 10th -12th players are just there for insurance.

But still, I would still want talent in 10th-12th spot in terms of emergency.

And more so in FIBA 40 min game.
However since tournaments have back to back games . Many teams use a different 8 to 9 man rotation for each game

Note in 2014 , 15 pool players traveled to Spain.
The idea is to keep the playes in the program for 11th to 15th pool members, for familiarity.
So these are the SJs , Nieto , special draft dudes ..

Starting 5 (and maybe the 6th man) should be constant imo. 7th - 9th can be changed. Just like Hadaddi era Iran.

PG: Kamrani
SG: Kazemi
SF: Bahrami
PF: Sahakian
C: Haddadi
6th Man: Jamshidi

For Gilas: Imo, it would be something like

PG: Kiefer
SG: Rayray
SF: Dwight
PF: AJ (if healthy), Tamayo or Baltazar (If AJ not healthy)
C: Kai and Kouame ( If JC, not available)

11: Heading
12: Erram

Jordan Heading has been puncturing the hoops from 3-pt range for his team in Taiwan. I'm now convinced he's really a natural 3-pt shooter. Heading might end up as a better shooter than Matt Wright in Gilas uniform. Well, hopefully ganoon sana ang mangyayari. Wright has been a big disappointment for Gilas.

Its not a far fetched idea bro. Did anyone here at IBN or anywhere else see the recruitment of Ladis Lepalam coming? I think there are a lot of things going on with Gilas that are/were not announced to the public until it materializes.

I reckon we're still recruiting behind the scenes. I hope we can recruit more teenagers. Harder to actually play, though, given that NCR is on Alert Level 3.

I just hope it is not just because of weaker competition. No disrespect to local taiwanese, but we all know even some of our college local players are better than them. Both offense and defense.

But judging it with his ABL and Gilas stint, I think he is really a good shooter, good but not great yet.

When I say great, I mean almost automatic, and consistent every game.(or most games)

Well, compared to locals in ABL, especially the Malaysians, Indonesians, Vietnamese, Thais and Hong Kongers, locals (Taiwanese players) are way better than the first five I have mentioned.

Agree.
The locals of SEA countries (with the exception of the Philippines of course) are still inferior to Taiwanese locals. If I'm not mistaken, Thailand's Jakrawan is registering measly stats in the T1 league. So I think the level of competition in the T1 league is good enough.

Jakrawan. The same Jakrawan that schooled Go, Cariño, and Baltazar. Man. I hope the three learned from that and improve their post defense. Go and Baltazar are good team defenders already, and Baltazar can switch to the perimeter. Hope they don't get eaten alive by a post player. Post D is crucial when facing China and the MENA teams.

Anyway, I have no problem including Heading in one of our Gilas Designated shooters.

Who are the Wing shooters candiates for us anyway?

I think

In PBA: It is Wright and Pogoy

In Overseas: It is maybe Tuffin and Heading

In College: Hmmm Idk. Maybe Delianos or hmmm

Parks is hitting his prime already. Started in his last pba season where he should be in the mythical 5.

Rayray talents in no joke. As i said multiple times, before the existence of kai. It was Rayray who was the nearest homegrown Filipino to reach Nba.

Now, it. Is a question on how well Rayray will fit in Gilas System now.

Parks will fit in as a defender (man and team), a shooter, a secondary handler, and a scorer.

Hope he'd like playing for Gilas this time, and he follows through by joining the team.

Somehow I understand Jakrawan's not so impressive stats in the T1 league since he's playing behind world imports playing the big men positions. That's the problem if you're an Asian import big man playing in leagues like the B-league or T1, SBL or P-league becoz yung mga world imports na hina hire nila are usually big men. I assume Jakrawan's opportunity to score is limited as it is the world imports who are given the lion share of opportunities.

Thats what I been saying. Adding more imports in PBA will limit opportunities of our big Man to develop real game skills and IQ. Including no limits on Fil for in roster. I don't have issue with limitless height but make it one import at a time like UAAP.

I’d love to see Torculas and Ice Hontiveros develop some more PG skills..

Yeah, it would be nice if they can be at least combo guards. They kinda try to be PGs. If they develop good PG skills, they would be great assets.

Hope that the Gilas coaching staff is thinking of inviting them to the senior team. Good news for Torculas is that he committed to UP, a school that doesn't mind lending players for Gilas.

This. IMO the Japan vets of Kiefer, Thirdy, Dwight and Parks should be in the team. Those guys can contribute without needing to score and are perfect for Tab's system.

IMO, thirdy does not belong in that group. The three are obviously real good.

Even as an off the bench utility player? Who would you rather have then? We got a lot of options but IMO he's more FIBA ready than the others

Matt Wright was well-advertised here by one poster some years ago for the national team's need for shooter. He even downplayed Ray Parks Jr. and exaggerated Matt Wright. And after Matt's dismal performances for Gilas, he was scratching his head wondering what went wrong with his prediction and analysis..

Well, honestly, I'm also guilty of sort of overhyping Matthew Wright prior to Wright's stint with Gilas senior national team (PBA-select Gilas team). My assessment or expectation from Wright was based on his collegiate career in the US NCAA div. 1 school where he registered decent stats (more decent than fellow NCAA div. 1 Fil-ams like Dwight Ramos & Gabe Norwood) as well as with the fact that Wright played as an import in the French div. 1 pro league which is no mean feat. Wright also played splendidly with the Malaysian Dragons in the ASEAN Basketball League. Wright was also impressive when he played for the Gilas cadets in the 2017 Jones Cup.

But during his stint with the Gilas senior national team made up mostly of PBA players, he never came close to living up with my expectation.
