Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

You're basing your assessment in just 1 game? I think one outstanding game by a player is too small a sample size to come up with such a assessment.

I'm not saying Cyrus doesn't have potential, what I'm saying is you really need more games to properly evaluate a player's potential.

One game doesn't define a player.

No, im not basing xyrus game yesterday..its the whole time he is playing under jong uichico the most oc coach that we have who happebs to be tim cones deputy in Gilas. He was a pleasant surprise he was unimpressive in his feu, mpbl and pba 3x3 stints but in nlex he play his role to the point..

Xyrus will not give you 10 3s per game for gilas but he has potential give you one or two in limited minutes much like kevin alas role in the asiad team..as he is a able slasher (at least innasian level)

Evebtually pba will create a separate pool for the sea and asian games with the way things are going

i actually hope they dont do this. I hope SBP taps UAAP\NCAA or even the other RP pro leagues for games\tournament that PBA isn't really needed. not only does it remove pressure from PBA to build a tam every tournament, but it also forces other stakeholders to carry the burden of repping the flag.its a good marketing ploy for those leagues as well. if they fail, PBA becomes the hero to the rescue. but again, for as long as the other leagues can win, PBA can just stick with the bigger tournaments\games to focus on.

They wont as I don't hear uaap and ncaa changing the clanedars for sea games..

Ok noted.
I just want to see more games of Cyrus Torres to really assess his game. Consistency is really important. And of course his ability to play in a high level game. We've seen many Pinoy players doing well in the PBA but pag pinalaro mo na sa FIBA or other international competitions, anemic na ang laro.

Yup more reps, but the advantage is he is young at 25 so its really who among him or dave ildefonso who can adjust to become a swiss knife shooter for us..

I watched the replay of the Gilas-Chinese Taipei match in the 3rd window, I think the Taiwanese didn't just do well on offense, they were also impressive on defense. Hirap talaga tayo in executing our plays, it was just that Justin Brownlee really was impressive in offense. The thing about the this new Chinese Taipei team is that, almost everyone can shoot - guards, wings & their fours. Everybody is a threat from the outside. And not only they are good shooters, their guards & wingman, specially the Afro guard Mohammed Baschir Gadiaga a. k. a. "Abassi", are shifty slashers.

On the Gilas side, none among our guards Iskati Thompson, CJ Perez & Chris Newsome are as good 3-pt. shooters as those CT players. CJ Perez is supposedly our best slasher but CJ is not the same player in the FIBA game as he was 5 or 6 years ago & he isn't known as a 3-pt shooter. Newsome on the other hand has somewhat been slowed down by his age. Iskati also can't slash or hit from the outside & I think he's not as quick as the CT guards. The only bright spot among our local guards & wings was Dwight Ramos. I feel we need another point guard out there like a Schonny Winston & a legit 3-pt shooter in Jordan Heading. Calvin Oftana, obviously is a disappointment. I feel coach Tim should have used KQ more in this game.

The Chinese Taipei naturalized player 7-foot Brandon Gilbeck isn't really a big scorer but he's a force inside the shaded lane, a good rebounder & a monster of a rim protector. He's a perfect compliment to the skilled & shifty guards & wingmen of CT.

And take note, wala pa dyan yung mga Hinton brothers who are expected to further strengthen the team.

Come to think of it, can we be an Asian power, or even be competitive beyond Asia with a defensive big like Gilbeck as our NP?

Your best shooter is in PBA (heading)

your best PG’s available are outside the PBA (kiefer, SJ)

i think we’re capable of doing so.. we saw the glimpse of ange as NP

Having someone like a Gilbeck as our NP would't address our our weakness at the 3-4 spots & it will only crowd our center spot with Kai & AJ Edu already there. Then baka ma declare pang local si QMB ng FIBA (w/c I think is highly probable). Plus FIBA might give Ange Kouame an exemption as well.

Iba kasi structure ng Chinese Taipei team to that of Gilas. The CT team has plenty of skilled guards & wingmen which are deadshot from the outside & shifty slashers. Pero kulang sila ng malaki that's why a tall NP workhorse like Gilbeck work best for CT.

Gilas on the other hand, strength na natin yung center spot with Kai, Edu & maybe a QMB & Kouame (hopefully). What our locals lacked are competent guards & wings who can hit it from the outside & slash as well. That's why somebody like a Justin Brownlee fits our team.

In that game vs. CT, our local guards & wingmen were greatly outgunned by their Taiwanese counterparts. Justin Brownlee''s brilliant performance kept us afloat in that game. Only Dwight Ramos was the bright spot among our local wingmen.

I know many here would disagree with me but I would prefer Gilas be grouped with Jordan instead of CT. With Jordan, you know that you only have to deal with its starting 5 - RHJ, Al Dwairi, Ibrahim, Abu Hawas, Abbas. Jordan's bench isn't really a threat.

Pero sa Chinese Taipei, halos lahat kailangan mong depensahan ng maigi. Almost everyone can shoot/score, even their 10th & 11th men. What more if the Hinton brothers will suit up for CT in the Asia Cup. Current CT team is the South Korea team in Asian basketball at present.

i agree. and on top of that, it's also the offense is ran by CTC. He needs a consistent scorer to draw the D (and create from nothing when offense is dry) and he needs a big who can pass in Kai. if JB is not available in SA and he taps Ange, I would like to see how the flow will go.

CCR's dribble drive also doesnt need a defensive big just because he had Ranidel and Ping. Kuya Dray was perfect for CCR because he is both a scorer, and tough he isnt know for defense, he is still big and is able to help Ranidel and Ping. CTB and CRT on the other hand, because the ball gets moved a lotmore, can survive with a defensive big and they have showed this before.

but, based on these 4 coaches only, we need reliable 3pt shooters who can contribute with other roles. a playmaker who can shoot, a 3 and D guy, a big who can shoot 3. you name it, as long as he has respectable 3pt%, GIlas would need that. and that player should be a local. im quite interested to see if Carl and KQ can show more this coming SA games.

Yeah, SJ Belangel is worth a try. We've seen a glimpse of what he can do in the FIBA level during his stint with Gilas under coach Tab Baldwin in 2021. Belangel didn't do badly for Gilas at that time. He was even coach Tab's premier point guard. I like Belangel's "gulang", grit & some swagger which he had displayed with Gilas almost 4 years ago. And he has improved from there after a few years playing pro basketball in the KBL.

I know this is a controversial take but I feel RR Pogoy is more serviceable for Gilas than CJ Perez right now. At least Pogoy has a decent 3 pt. shooting & he can defend. The downside though is his age as he turns 33 in 2 months time.

The issue we have now, though, is, again, right now we don't have paint protectors other than Kai, AJ, Japeth, and Ange. If none of them are in the lineup, do we have the personnel to survive on defense, or will we be a donut on that end and we cannot compensate?

As to the hole in the 4, maybe a defensive-minded PF/C who can play next to Kai and AJ. As to 3, can we develop 3&D wings who can defend the 3-spot in FIBA?

I think subrang malas naman natin if none among Kai, AJ Edu, Japeth would be in the line up. And even if none of them wud be in Gilas for a particular window qualifier or a tournament (sabihin na nating subrang malas na talaga tayo) there's still hope that QMB & or Koume would be declared by FIBA as pinoy local players.

Problem with a NP that plays as a center like a Brandon Gilbeck is that, mahina talaga yung mga locals natin in the 3 & 4 positions which are the positions that Justin Brownlee plays. Let's face it, we have become so dependent with what JB brings to the table that not having him in the team will leave a huge void in the 3 & 4 positions. JB is our go-to-guy & our best 3-pt. shooter in the team. If only Calvin Oftana has been delivering those 3 pointers, may katulong sana si Dwight Ramos sa wings as a scoring/3-pt threat in the wings.

Any official news on FIBA's decision on JB's testing positive for weed? Some vloggers saying that he's facing a 2-year suspension.

so what happens if neither is localised? we are left with JMF and Troy. will it force CTC to get Balti?do we consider Greggy boy?
if JB is not available, will CTC get Ange and address the rebounding and interior D, or will we get a hagop rule affected player (Mikey, Scuba, or whoever) to replace JB?

i agree with the concerns, but as our NSA, SBP has to play the hand it is deatt with. hopefully, not all of these bad scenario happen all at the same time..

If none among QMB & Kouame gets cleared by FIBA as local player & JB gets more than 3 months suspension, then huwag na tayong umasa pa of a decent showing in the Asia Cup in August. It's like all bad things converging against Gilas. Idagdag mo pa dyan yung shitty 9-day preparation period that PBA is giving Gilas. As Gilas fans, wala na tayong magagawa doon.
