Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

I think we’re missing the fact that Kouame was our second best player in the Asian games. Kouame might not be visible recently but he was still the anchor of Gilas team that was competitive. It seems to me Edu’s various knee injuries limits his effectiveness inside. It was obvious in the WC. He doesnt go hard in the paint. Kouame not only defended for us in the Asian games but also scored inside. Something that Edu is reluctant to do and what we miss from Kai now.

It looks to me that this team isnt that good. Scottie was a minus 35, 0 out of 7 in the field at 30 minutes. Fron what I read it was with Newsome we were able to catch up. If this is a meritocracry Newsome should be getting more minutes than Scottie. Its good TC played JMF less in this game. But can we really rely on Japeth and Edu in the Asia cup? There are many questions on scoring and defense in TCs so called best 12. I hope something happens.

Ange hasn't been good offensively in this year's EASL, though. Defensively, although he's been good, he made mistakes in MERALCO's game against New Taipei.

If we fail to qualify for the WC 2027, the blame should 100% go to Chua. He is the mastermind behind this shallow pool bullshit.

If you rewatch the 2023 Asiad, that team didn’t have the triangle as their main offense.

I think we should rebuild either way, whether we qualify or we fail to qualify. Build the best pool possible that can play with Kai, AJ, and Dwight long-term while still remaining competitive in Asia.

It would be very very disappointing for the Philippine basketball community if we fail to qualify for the 2027 FIBA World Cup. It is something most of us here (if not all) will not accept. This is supposed to be our golden generation team much like the Iran golden generation team in the late 2000's to the mid-2010's. I can't imagine us not playing in Doha in 2027. That would be terrible.

Even in Dubai he’s a bit awkward. But he’s still willing to mix it up inside. From what I saw from Edu he’s not as willing to play against physical contact.

I think Kouame has not recovered 100% from his torn ACL injury a few years ago. It seems recent medical practice do not operate on partially torn ACLs. But from what I see in Kouame it doesnt seem this medical advice helped him at all. I see operated athletes more confident than him. Although there are cases that lateral movemeny seem to be affected like with Jerom Lastimosa and Sanggalang before. But there are cases like Pingris where their laterals still seem to be decent. I cant help but think if surgery would have been better for Kouame.

This is how I see our debacle in the 3rd window qualifier for the 2025 Asia Cup:

Of course Gilas was greatly affected with the absence of Kai Sotto. But more than that, I think our team experienced some sort of a slump & some of our players were tired & weary, especially the Ginebra guys who were fresh from a 3-game quarterfinal series in the PBA Commissioner's Cup. The Gilas team that played in a pocket tournament in Doha & the 3rd window isn't in the same form & condition as the Gilas that beat Latvia & lost to Georgia (very close game) & Brazil in the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT). It also isn't in the same form & condition as the Gilas team that beat New Zealand in the 2nd window of the 2025 Asia Cup qualifiers.

Remember that we lost Kai Sotto early in the game versus Georgia in the 2024 OQT, yet we lost to the Georgians in a game that we could have won. Then our loss to Brazil (w/o Kai Sotto) wasn't a blowout loss.

I say, if it was a Gilas team that played in the 2024 OQT (minus Kai Sotto) that played in the 3rd window, I'm confident we could have won against both Chinese Taipei & New Zealand. If it was a Gilas team that played in the 2024 OQT that played against Lebanon (minus its key players) & Egypt in that pocket tournament in Doha, there's absolutely no way that Lebanon team & Egypt would have routed Gilas.

I think every team suffers some slump.

One major change between OQT and 3rd window team is that Newsome was the lead PG last OQT..New was more than decent last OQT, has the size and athleticism to match against European guard and being the main man of Meralco, he is guts to takes shits and be a threat on offense. This third window, it was Skati who plays the bulk of the PG playing time, 4 on 5 na agad in offense...What's more on defense it is 4.on 5 also as Junmar is a liability on defense especially in PNR...That's the reason why tambak Tayo in the first quarter. You just can't bench the Face of the PBA kuno and the 8time MVP

After winning the Asian Games and winning most of our qualifier, some wants to dismantle the team. The sacrifices and wins this group had, for others are no bearing they should be replaced

We have only 10 days to prepare for Asia Cup, how will the new players will know the system of TC

Who said that people want to dismantle the team. All they are asking is to add players in the pool. Not even the final 12. Let the players slug it our in practice and see who fits....Alangan Naman bano na at baldog pag tiyagaan mo pa if there are other options...Had Cone had the foresight, they could have inserted additional Practice players for this 3rd window since we are qualified Naman sa Asia Cup..Now because they refuse to add, it not fits their narrative of just maintaining the 14man pool because of short prep time for Asia Cup...

We have not won since Kai has not played for Gilas under Cone, 0-6so far, 0-7 if we include Georgia game where he went out due to injury. So panu di na mananalo ang Gilas...

Cone system is scouted, you just have to delay his sets by pressing Savior PG Skati double on Brownlee (sagged of on Skati who can't shoot)and Gilas will be in trouble, sinceang play lang Naman ng Gilas is give the ball to Brownlee and before High low of Kai and Junmar.

10 days prep time will that be enough to incorporate a new player like QMB
Why did he not include new players even as Practice players for this 3rd window, qualified na ang Gilas..Japan played with their Team C...

Pinipilit lang nila ang narrative if short preparation time as the reasoning for the 14man pool...Matigas lang talaga ulo ni Tim, Chua and Dy are cool with the idea if adding 2-3.playerd in the pool.... But Tim is so in loved with his 14 man pool..

If Cone insist on his 14 man , there is a big chance that Gilas won't make it to the World Cup . For the WCQ,,we will be grouped with Aus and NZ and East Asian Teams innthenfirdt round. .Are we confident that we can beat any of Aus, NZ, China Japan, and Sokor.... Or can we sweep Thailand with all their Thai Fors,,what if kumuha sila ng Naturalized player, How about Taipei, what if they include Hinton bros , may tulog ang Gilas, they best us already without them ... If we qualify for the second round, are we confident we can beat the Jordanian, Lebanese, Iranian team , lumakas na di ang Bahrain and Qatar..It's not as if Japs and Junmar will grow younger until Nov or Skati will have the balls to shoot or handle the ball to break the press by then....

because the new Gilas management with even Kume Marcial sitting on the bench is gatekeeping who gets the FIBA clearance which is entry level to the B League. previous regime was lax which led to even an Roosevelt Adams who only played in Gilas once(?) to pack his bags to B League instead.

make no mistake about it, the Homer Sayson (hit?) pieces are all about pressuring SBP and new Gilas managment to enlist QMB to Gilas, which leads to more bucks in B League. this window's losses and soon an Asia Cup disaster will increase uproar from fans for the QMB inclusion

I'd like to ask, for a team with good perimeter defenders in Scottie, Newsome, Dwight, and maybe AJ and Oftana, why haven't we guarded the 3-point line well this qualifiers?

We need to remedy that by November 2025.

I wonder why QMB's name is so loud in SocMed. Admittedly, he played well in the UAAP. But Mike Phillips also played well in the UAAP and was even younger when he came here. But there was no noise when he was claiming he already had a passport before 16.

Tab's Gilas was able to defeat Korea 2x straight and defend them decently. Are we saying Tab's Gilas team was overall better defensively? Given that the current team also has good perimeter defenders is it the system? Or is the presence of June Mar such a momentum giver for the opponent that this team always plays on a deficit?

1. based from YT bball bloggers, insistence to use drop coverage to cover for Junemar and Kai. but now that AJ is there, still drop coverage is employed, wherein other coverages may not result into late 3-pt closeouts.
2. players go under the screens (not sure if this is by design)
3. no one talks about this but i noticed a lot of Brownlee late closeouts. the issue with superhuman Brownlee performance is we cant blame him if difficult to play intense defense anymore

SoKor shot 32-74 from the field (10-32 from 3) in the first game, and 28-64 from the field (10-35 from 3) in the second game in that window. We did give up 6 free throws in the first game, and 18 free throws in the second.

This, to think that coach Tab's Gilas in 2021 was made up of amateur players. Amateurs pa lang sina Kai, Kouame, Dwight, Navarro, Balti, Tamayo, Heading, Belangel, Abarrientos, etc. at that time.

Of course team defense isn't just about having a good number of decent defenders in the roster. It's also about system.

Ange, Dwight, Navarro, and Balti were already good defenders at the time.

But yeah, it's about both personnel and scheme. Can't have one without the other.

I don't know about that. One thing is certain, M. Phillips will eventually play for us as a local. And hopefully, his youngest brother, 6'8 Jeremiah will become also a local. The kid is only 18.

Is Jeremiah a project like Isaiah, or he has also the potential of an 18-year old Mike Philipps?
