Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Just saw Yeshkels take on the Egypt loss. It seems up to the third Gilas was still at a manageable deficit. But apparently TC experimented with no centers. Tamayo was the center. I dien’t see the game so I let those who watched it give the positive things of the lineup. But it seems to me Im once again correct. Tamayo is no rim protector. I havent seen a lineup of him as center work out. It just has little rim protection without a significant increase in speed. Many of you are hungup on QMB and Phillips when we already have a decent small ball center in Balti. He was the rim protector when Kouame sat and Kai was not available. Of course this is just one game. Im sure against the smaller Taiwan this will work. I doubt it will against the NZ though.

Just went to that part too after I read this. So based on that video analysis of that game, it looks like it's no better defensively than when June Mar is in the lineup. June Mar provides more size and scoring as of now, though. But I dunno if we can immediately draw conclusions from just that. I'll need to see it against Taiwan and even NZ. At least Cone tried that lineup out in Doha.

So as of now, if both Kai and AJ are not in the lineup, we could be in trouble defensively, and we'll have to massively compensate for being a donut on defense.

Yeah, it was when Jordan Clarkson debuted as Gilas in a FIBA setting against Lebanon, the Arakji night night game. He was included in that lineup.

I believe Adams only played or included against KSA game last August 2022

It’s what we can also expect with Bennie as our lone big.

Bennie and Junemar are simply not rim protectors. It’s not their game.

Off Topic: Our first ever medal at the Asian Winter Games. Congratulations Philippine Curling Team.

Off topic: Those uniforms with the sun look great.

Please put the sun back on Gilas uniforms. Honestly, the Nike Gilas jerseys look lame: the wrong shade of blue, lazy design, ugly font.

Loved the Centennial team jerseys, I hope they can have a modern take on that.

Very much agree with U bro.
I think the Centennnial team jersey in 1998 was the most beautiful jersey design of our Philippine basketball team of all time. I alway like the dark blue color of our jersey instead of the light blue color.

I totally agree on all degree

that the propose new sets of uniforms on all our National Athletes on all discipline

should put more emphasis on that 3 Stars and a Sun emblem

I would suggest that it should be a FIGHTING YELLOW very impactful, very striking

surely it will boast the moral of our athletes if they've seen that the apparels they are wearing

had this strong Filipino vibes "Yung malakas ang dating", trans. with exclamation point.

plus aside from our beloved Lupang Hinirang, I think playing the late idol Francis M and his band

that very impactful and intense song "3 Stars and a Sun" would surely boast that inner desire of each athletes.

I do hope theirs a sports officials who are lurking around this forum and hopefully read my post

to somehow gave them an idea...that strong motivation.

those uniforms of our 90's Centennial Team and Curling Team is a perfect reference moving forward.

World FIVB for Men, FIBA Asia Cup, 2025 World Games, 33rd SEA Games, 20th Asian Games among others are fast approaching.

Nike kits are templated, there was a time when Gilas and Dominican Republic had the same color scheme and design

just hope that the new kit provider will give us a sleek design, i just hope its not those chinese brands (anta, 361, li ning)

We have some players with good length and good laterals but not enough I think. In Gilas you can count probably only 3 with plus wingspan and good laterals. That would be Scottie, Newsome and Edu. I’m not counting Japeth as he is supposed to be retired. Not counting KQ because he has slow laterals for his height.

This is why I was excited about Policarpio but his wingspan apparently wasn’t that great when measured by the pba

For Pinoy standards I think he has a good wingspan. What was it measured? He looks to have better laterals than KQ so that’s a plus. Balti’s wingspan is also shorter than expected for me at around 6’9.25. But he makes the most of it. The guy with a longer wingspan at 6’9.5, Roan Santos is slower laterally so doesnt look the defender Balti is. Plus wingspan players with decent laterals for their height are still difference makers for us. Compare that to Korea’s best PF with a supposed long wingspan. But apparently he has only 6’8 wingspan at a 6’7 height without shoes. So we just have to compare it to our and Asian standards. Let’s not compare it to NBA standards.

It’s a folly to do that. Compare Balti with their import and former NBA player Check Diallo. Diallo is just 6’7.5 without shoes. So basically just an inch taller than Balti. He is more explosive but you can’t really say remarkable for NBA standards. But he has a 7’4.5 wingspan. So let’s not compare with NBA level wingspan. They are still effective in Fiba not just NBA standards. That’s why Zhou Qi at 7’1 with 7’7 3/4 wingspan played in the NBA despite having less skill, athleticism and passion for the game than our own Kai.

Here's some: Pingris is 6'4" with an 80-inch wingspan. Japeth's wingspan is 7'2".

As for Policarpio, his wingspan was measured at 78.5 inches, if I read correctly.

That’s why Japeth got in the NCAA despite not really being skilled. He’s the homegrown with all the physical gifts but …

Policarpio at 6’6.5 wingspan at almost 6’5 seems to be unremarkable. Weird because when you see him play he looks like he has a plus wingspan.

I was expecting Policarpio to have around 81 to 82-inch wingspan. May I know what Kevin Quiambao's wingspan is? KQ seems to have a long wing span

It's good that wingspan is finally in the pinoy conscious. I've harped on KQ's 6'10 wingspan for a while now.

"Horizontal Rim Protection." It can negate lack of vertical rim protection (tall rim protector) by protecting ground (the paint), making entry passes difficult and disrupting plays.

It's partly how the Kai/JMF duo is feasible...because Newsome, Dwight and Scottie do a good job of horizontal defense. They cover a lot of ground, are versatile enough to switch coverages and play with great teamwork/chemistry. Them plus Brownlee mask the lack of foot speed of the big duo.

It's about time wingspan is properly measured, the fixation on just pure height is antiquated. Going crazy coz some guys are 1-2 inches shorter than expected while overlooking they have insane spans is mid.

I think Oftana also has good wingspan and so does Navarro and Tuffin.

^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^

I'm curious about the respective wingspans of Junmar, Dwight Ramos & AJ Edu.
Junmar & Dwight don't seem to have that impressive wingspan

I would argue that Phillips' motor is more important that KQ's wingspan. The key to UP's victory over DLSU recently is the negation of Phillips' effectiveness with the coming of QMB who had the wingspan and the height to go against DLSU's superior frontline. It is actually a combination of all the things you guys are using as basis to look at a player's effectiveness.

Correct, the title of the video is "speed over size."

But, it later emphasizes that along with the speed (and all skills/abilities) of the OKC defenders...they were unusually long. What it makes clear though is the non-reliance on pure height.

What's Arwind's measured reach?

I don't know but Arwind's wingspan looks impressive as well. My wild guess is that Arwind's wingspan is around 78 to 80 inches, which is impressive for someone who is only around 6-foot-3/6-foot-4
