Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

I hope more U19 teenagers will be invited to the Gilas pool. We're qualified anyway, so might as well think of inviting high-upside prospects that will look to play beyond 2023 and even 2027.

Like who? I can think of: (U20)

Carl Tamayo
Kevin Quiambao
Raven Cortez
Cholo Anonuevo
And many more that I am forgetting

I am not sure if they will include 16-17 yrs old. Knowing SBP, I know high chance they wouldn"t. It will be 18-20yrs old if there will be youngsters.

And I am not counting overseas playing prospects yet. ( Kai, Lopez, Dalph, etc)

Jonnel Policarpio, Ice Hontiveros, Anton Eusebio, Lowell Briones, Kyle Ong, Jordi GDL, Aldous Torculas, maybe even the favorites Padrigao and Fortea. I think that's plenty to think about.

Guys, how do you think the Gilas team that beat Korea twice in the 3rd window qualifier of the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup would fare against the Jordan, Kazakhstan, Iran & Lebanon team that played in the recent 1st window qualifiers of the 2023 FIBA World Cup?

I'm confident we'll beat Jordan(minus Ahmed Al Dwairi), Kazakhstan(no naturalized player) but will be tested against Iran & Lebanon. I think we can split our 2 games vs. Iran but will probably lost both games vs. Lebanon in close games.

IMO we win both games against Iran but Lebanon is a tough one as our PGs are our weakest link. I see having a hard time executing in crunch time and unless we hit lucky shots we could lose both games

We'll beat Jordan with or without Al-Dwairi. Remember we only had Ange in the Abdullah Cup. So having Kai (and maybe Edu) would negate their advantage in rebounding. No, it won't be a cake walk but our chances are higher.

Lebanon and Iran will be tough as they are playing with a complete roster, but they are beatable if we play our cards right.

Kazakhstan is always beatable. They only won over us back in the 5th window of the 2019 qualifiers because Coach Yeng was a fucking moron.

I see a full force Gilas team being evenly match vs. Jordan with Al Dwairi & a naturalized player (perhaps a Dar Tucker) as of now. But things would probably be different a year from now, more so 2 years from now as our Gilas team is a significantly younger team compared to Jordan. I mean, Gilas is expected to improve better than Jordan in the next 2 years (Hopefully).

Al Dwairi, who is obviously Jordan's best local talent is already in his late 20's. Combo guard Freddie Ibrahim packs a lot of promise & is probably around 24 yrs of age so he's expected to improve significantly in the next 2 years.

Gilas on the other hand is relatively a young team with Suerte being the oldest player at 27, but Suerte isn't a key player of the team. I don't expect him to consistently be on the final-12 man roster of the team in window qualifying games, more so in tournament proper games. Most of our Gilas players are in the 25, 24 & 23 age bracket, so these players are expected to significantly improve thru time. Kai Sotto, being the youngest at 19, is expected to be a much better player in 2 years time. Despite being hit by multiple injuries in his young career, I still have some high regard for AJ Edu & expect him to be a vital component of Gilas in the very near future.

We have produced a number of 6'7+ players in this generation. Kailangan na lang talaga i-develop sila ng maayos. With each new generation getting taller, I expect to see more in the future. We can finally say goodbye to midget ball that Chot loves too much.

We have the play style to match all those teams. We're versatile defensively and kinda tough as well. The versatility will serve us well against Iran, Kazakhstan, and maybe Lebanon. We also have an interior game on both ends now, and it will help us against Jordan, Iran, and Lebanon. We have the frontline to match MENA and Central Asian teams.

As for results, right now we sweep Kazakhstan, and probably split Iran, Jordan, and Lebanon, all close games. Eventually, however, we might be able to sweep all of them.

Actually di ako nalalakasan sa Kazakhstan.. parang they didn't level up since then even they have some talents.. Sakin lang KSA might be better than them right now.. and Taipei can still beat them convincingly, even i will put my money on Guam than them .. One of the reason was they don't have pipeline of young players and lacked of legit big man to catch up against big teams in Asia.. Zhigulin is more of stretch 4 rather than a big man, same as Ponomorev.. also they have lacked of good guards, aside their NP guard and Marchuk..

Losing to Kazakhstan at home, to me, was plain incompetence, and was frankly, unacceptable. It nearly cost us a WC spot. Good thing we stamped our class on them later on, and SoKor managed to beat Lebanon.

However, in the WC itself, we might as well have given that spot to Lebanon. Bad lineup choices, and the PBA schedule didn't help. It was embarrassing. Didn't even win against Angola and Tunisia, really?

Well, Tunisia is a top team in Africa. They even beat Iran in the World Cup. That was the same Iran team that beat Gilas by 20. Angola is a traditional top team in Africa that won 11 gold medals. Never underestimate those teams.

Lost to Angola, Tunisia, and Iran... by 20. *shaking my head*

Unacceptable. We didn't deserve to be in that WC. I was willing to give either Slovenia or Lebanon the slot.

I know right. Poor and short preparation, and friendlies with non WC participate except for Ivory coast.

Blame goes to PBA flawed priorities.

Let's just pretend it didn't happen. We embarrassed ourselves in front of the whole world. Remember when the Serbian coach ridiculed us like we didn't belong in there?

And the sad thing is we played like one.

Gotta ask, what's Ricci Rivero doing nowadays? Is he even interested in being a baller anymore?

He’s shooting a movie I think :D Feel bad for him, moved from DLSU so he could play for Gilas and we don’t even know if he even got invited. If there’s a 3x3 maybe they should have him. Also he turned down T1 and B2 offers I believe.

T1 League and B.League offers can earn him millions in a couple of months. Showbiz industry in our country is currently at low these days, in my opinion.

Not sure how much he actually earns but looking at his ig page he has a lot of endorsements. It’s passive income, he posts a pic with the product and he gets paid. He doesn’t have to do as much but I don’t know how the pay compares.

T1 has limited minutes for asian imports, is this true? Also our division 2 guys in B.league aren’t really doing well. And though I don’t like Bolick I heard his offer is also in div 2. Still, the others have Gilas, Filbasket or MPBL and he just went full showbiz for almost two years lol.

Well if he's happy at doing those things than playing ball then more power to him. He clearly isn't as invested in basketball than the others. I was wondering how a guy that looked like a future MVP contender at LaSalle played so bad in UP. Maybe he just doesn't want it as much as the other guys. Maybe he's contented earning money by posing half naked and being pa cute in TV.

A problem one particular player at Niigata also struggles with.
