I got a feeling one of those Chinese brands might win this contract. Pick your poison: 361, Anta, LiNing, Peak or Quiodan (the closest thing to Jordan, oh gawd please no)

Judging from the 1st & 2nd windows of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers, which teams do you think are the top 8 teams in Asia-Oceania?

My take is this, in no particular order:

1. Australia
2. New Zealand
3. Lebanon
4. Jordan
5. China
6. Philippines
7. Japan
8. South Korea

I think battling for the 9th spot are Chinese Taipei, Iran & Saudi Arabia & even Qatar.

I feel Chinese Taipei, Iran & Qatar are improving. Iran has really declined after the retirement of Samad Nikkah Bahrami & Hamed Haddadi but this current Iran team which is in the rebuilding mode have some promising young players. One of whom has yet to play in its senior national team - Parsa Fallah, who is doing very well in the US NCAA div. 1 college hoops.

Taiwan on the other hand has the Hinton brothers who are honing their skills in the US NCAA div. 1 collegiate basketball. Taiwan also has the 6-foot-2 talented shooting guard Mohammed Bashir Gadiaga a.k.a "Abbasi" who is honing his skills as an Asian import in the Japanese B-league & 6-foot-3 combo guard Benson Lin who is playing in the CBA in mainland China.

Qatar of course made some stir in the Asia Cup qualifiers when it beat tormentor Iran in the 2nd window last November. Qatar got the benefit of having 2 American imports in its roster as one of these imports is considered as a local player by FIBA. Then there are those players of no Qatari descent being "converted" by Qatar as local players one of which is 6-foot-9 stretch-4 Alen Hadzebogovic who is currently playing professional hoops in Britain.

I am not to high with New Zealand if we just based it on games in this window. They were just up by 6 pts both of the games and we all know how terrible the line up of Taiwan in the first window.

But that wasn't a full-force NZ team in the 1st & 2nd windows of the 2025 Asia Cup qualifiers. A full force NZ team would be like their 2023 World Cup roster plus 6-foot-10 versatile big guy Sam Waardenburg, & the Webster brothers.

The thing about NZ is that it has never sent it national team-A in the 2017 & 2022 editions of FIBA Asia Cup.

BTW, in the 2 games between NZ & Chinese Taipei in the 2025 Asia Cup qualifiers, NZ beat Chinese Taipei by an averaged of 18.5 pts./game.

Would be funny if Gilas goes local , i.e. Delta sportswear (UST’s kit provider)

either way, universidad will still sell authentic knock-off gilas jerseys

Sorry I mean NZ was only up 6 pts after the 3rd quarter in both games.

They were able to open the game only at the 4th quarter. A Taiwan team who we beat big and never got close to us after the 1st quarter

In a span of just 1 year, how many Gilas players got injured - Malonzo, AJ Edu, Iskati Thompson, Kai & most recent Dwight Ramos? That's 5 players in the 1st year of Gilas program alone under coach Tim.

Nah, its not exclusive to Gilas. Sokor has been fielding almost different lineups every window. They have more injuries than Gilas and they have chemistry problems due to these changes. They havent really gotten their groove back.

Kai is injured, AJ is there
Scottie was injured, newsome is capable at PG
Dwight is injured but we got malonzo back and KQ gets more playing time
I dont really see the issue why we need to further expand the pool when we already have 3-4 players as reserves

Its just that your favorite players are not in the pool.

Who are among the reserved players in Gilas? An aging Japeth Aguilar who is supposed to have retired from the national team but have to come out from retirement everytime a Gilas big man is injured? Another aging player in Troy Rosario who has hardly proven himself as a national team player some years ago?

What favorite players of mine who aren't in Gilas that you're talking about? Saying like "this player should be in the national team as I think he is serviceable for the team" doesn't really suggest that player is a favorite of mine. I'm just trying to be objective & rational.

Bro, it's just natural that if a player plays very well in whichever leagues he play, may it be the PBA, B-league, KBL, people have the tendency to think or suggest that maybe that player deserves a national team invite. Of course hindi naman lahat ng situation ay ganoon. Like in Justin Arana's case, he has been playing very well at Converge but most of us here at IBN think he's not serviceable for Gilas in the Asian or world level basketball.

Japeth, Mason, Troy and Kouame are in the pool. Very debatable if some players are better than them. Since CTC is the coach, he should be given free reign and he has since delivered. I will not question his player choices or pool size.

Issue is our lineup security in wing defense and bigman defense.

Dwight, Oftana, and JB are our only proven wing defenders in the pool. Malonzo kept up with Newsome last night, but we'll need to see something out of him in Doha.

Kai, AJ, Japeth, and Ange are our only proven bigman defenders in FIBA so far. Kai's out with an ACL injury, AJ's had a history of injuries, Japeth's 38 and hasn't played that well lately, and Ange is an NP. June Mar can score inside and rebound, but he's a defensive liability.

If we're not going to address the lineup issues here, we need to find a workable lineup with the players we have so that we can survive and win without Kai and even AJ.

We need Ange in the exhibition games. Just sayin'. The guy is available.

SMC/SBP doesn't want him as NP. I think he's just an option if JB gets injured or in tourneys that doesn't limit NPs.

Playing Ange is the easiest way to find a workable lineup without Kai, AJ, and Japeth. We will have to rely on locals for scoring, though, and let's see if Ange can take over once JB retires.

Parks feud with TNT is the reason he can't consistently comeback with Gilas, he made a return in 2022 due to Al Chua, but even now SMC is redundant to give Parks another chance.. And also obviously Ramos is always the first choice in terms of off guard/wingman role of Gilas while Newsome, Malonzo, KQ and even Oftana can do what Parks can do on the table...

Hesitant, not redundant.

Man I thought Baloria would have had a better career than Thompson.

The bottom line here is we need bigmen because, apparently, Kai is injured, Japeth is injured and Troy is injured as well.

We need third and fourth bigmen because Edu and June Mar also have injury history. We cannot fully rely on them.

Not just any bigs. The ones who can protect the paint like Kai and AJ. Heck, even Japeth. If we don't have a steady pool of interior defenders, we'll have to compensate.

I'm OK with us going with Ange as our NP after JB retires. He's in the pool anyways, and has played under Cone before.

Man I thought Baloria would have had a better career than Thompson.

Arboleda I thought was going to be a steal for TNT. Even though he was undersized he's got really long limbs.

Baloria I thought would have at least have a Mark Macapagal like career.

At this point, we just need to see if there can be a workable lineup among the available pieces. We have to use the Doha tournament and this window to figure it out.

I'd like to win our group, but priority should be to find a workable lineup. We will need as many workable lineups as possible, especially in the November 2025 and even February 2026 windows.

OK, I'll have a few questions here.

1. Do we have the players to form a workable lineup when none of Kai, AJ, and Japeth are on the floor?
2. How do the players and the system compensate for the lack of an interior defender when none of Kai, AJ, and Japeth are on the floor?
3. If we don't have a workable lineup without Kai, AJ, and Japeth, how will we adjust?

As to 1 and 2 (which are interrelated), I remember that we played the games against Georgia and Brazil with June Mar and Japeth as basically our only centers (Kai was there against Georgia for only a half). We zoned against Georgia, and we shot 36-57 from the field (13-23 from 3). Against Brazil, June Mar was targeted in PnR and we couldn't get our offense going in the 2nd half.

I hope we have answers to 1 and 2 by this window. If we can't answer them, we'll have to answer 3 after the Asia Cup.

If only QMB is declared by FIBA as local Pinoy in time for the 3rd window, and Ange Kouame being declared by FIBA as Gilas local player as well, we won't be having this kind of discussion.

Basically, if we get another rotation big (FIBA-eligible or NP) who can defend the paint full-time like Kai and AJ, we won't have to worry as much about holes in our defense when both Kai and AJ are out of the lineup.
