Who knows Troy after like 8 years becomes finally effective in Fiba. It is possible. You know what else is missing? Shooting. This Gilas team lacks shooting but no Heading. Heading unlike Balti has a fully formed international resume. But I guess it will take for Gilas to flounder shooting-wise before TC even considers Heading. Or Troy flounders enough to force TC to get another big, well not named Baltazar. We have a lot of TC apologizers even today. But if Gilas flounders and TC still sticks to not choosing the obvious options public pressure will surely increase. At this point Erram has a better chance of being picked than Balti and people will say nothing is wrong with that.
And about Troy, I actually blame TNT for not developing him properly. Too much emphasis on his shooting, not enough emphasis on his defense. I mean, became a better defender in Blackwater and Ginebra, whereas in TNT, his defense wasn't as notable.
With his physical tools, he should have been a better defender. Had he been a better defender earlier on, his poor shooting performances would have been better compensated.

Troy I think is one of the victims of Tab's first removal. First was JMF's lighter weight in FIba. Second was Troy's evolution to a big SF. If Tab continued he mightve converted Troy to a decent Fiba SF.
Edit: Troy is actually a good PBA player. He was the main big of TNT for a few years. They traded Tautuaa but kept him. But he was a tweener in TNT. He didnt fit the big archetypes of Chot: high flyer, skilled perimeter big, bruiser. Those who said that the triangle, without the need for dribbling, maximized his skills are correct. The thing is I don't think he'll be serviceable in Fiba without dribbling, even in the triangle.

And Troy is best doing what he's currently doing right now in Ginebra. Occasional outside shot, fight for loose balls and rebounds, and play D. At least he has a fallback when his outside shot's not going in.

Balti, Heading and QMB are NOT future members as far as Tim Cone is concerned. Those 3 are just fan favorites in the real world.
It makes perfect sense to argue that Troy knows the system because it will make life easier for the coaching staff. Learning the triangle offense is very important for this team as it allows them to execute better, utilize the nuances of the offense better and implement more advanced concepts.
Cons of introducing a Triangle Offense beginner:
- Team will go back to rudimentary level of the offense, most likely won't work against a team like New Zealand
- Team will not be able to utilize the window to implement advanced concepts they can use in the world stage
- Coaching staff needs to allocate time and resources to get the new guy up to speed in terms of knowledge of the system, habits and reads
Career is now downhill -- wrong, career is in resurgence as a defensive stopper with the Ginebra ballclub
Undersized -- as a 4/5 yes, but as a 4/3, 6'6 - 6'7 is perfectly appropriate
Disappointment in FIBA before -- different offense, but moot point because it doesnt matter. Junmar has been a disappointment in FIBA before. So has Kai, Scottie and Japeth at one point.
Wrong: Heading was given a call up. Resurgence? How is the performance of Ginebra this conference? Is he the major factor for the victories of Ginebra? A few good games doesn't mean resurgence. It is still going downhill. Junemar was a disappointment because he was not trusted by Chot. Troy was given trust before and failed by Chot and Tab. He can't play 3, doesn't have the mobility and shotmaking of Bahrami. He is an undersized four. Again, the best time to integrate new players is when there is less pressure to win. We are already qualified for the Asia cup.

In case FIBA finally declares QMB as eligible to play for Gilas as a local player, I think QMB's addition to the Gilas program would really be significant as he would really improve our pool big men in the team which is an area that have been shallow for Gilas all these years.
Imagine a pool of Kai, Junmar Fajardo, AJ Edu & QMB as our pool of big men standing at least 6-foot-9. Never in the history of Phi basketball did we have that many 6-foot-9 or taller bigs who are legit national team materials & who can make some impact in Asian basketball.

That’s what we’re about to find out.

It’s not like we are Lithuania or Latvia where 6’8+ dudes are aplenty.
Don’t forget Edu is injury prone, Junmar is 35, Japs is 38, QMB/Ange are not cleared, and Cone is too stubborn to add Baltazar.

I think the best solution for us right now with our size issues is a naturalized player, same as sir Rds. That is if QMB, Ange, and Mike aren't cleared by FIBA.
Now, as for added size, there's another big in Kemark Carino, who turns 27 next month. Offensive liability, though, and I saw him commit fouls when blown by. If we have no guarantee on performance in FIBA, I'd rather bet on the younger guy. At least the younger guy has more room to improve.

Kaya nga, the idea of having a small pool while not including some deserving & good players to the pool isn't really about coach Tim only doing it for the welfare of the team. Instead, there's really politics behind the non-inclusion of players like Heading, & Balti. We all know that Heading & Balti are playing for Delta which doesn't have a good relationship with SMC.

We all know that politics is everywhere in the Philippines & that there are only few aspects in our everyday lives where politics isn't present. But I think there are few times naman in which politics wasn't present or a factor in the selection of our national team players. I think there wasn't any politics in the selection of players in our Centennial team in 1998 which was coached by no less than Tim Cone himself. Yung mejo controversial lang doon was the non-inclussion of Nelson Asaytono who at that time was easily among the top 5 best players in the PBA. But as coach Tim Cone reasoned out, as great & highly skilled a player Asaytono was, he wasn't a team player. He was just too individualistic a player which won't cut it making it to a team that puts emphasis on teamwork & team play.
