Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Mr. Long Bomb just played an official PSL game. Other pro players in that league looks obviously insulted by the stunt and proceeded to play him ultra-physical.

It's like you're serious with your job and then a clown gets hired.

I think there is still a good chance AJ is playing this coming window. Malonzo is coming back as well.

If AJ's there, we can lean on our defense. Hope Malonzo can defend by then too.

Until Kai comes back, I think we need to lean on JB and our defense.

No imports allowed, heck if its possible no FIlAms or Half breeds.

and this is why i doubt Ange will get any love from FIBA. Import = foreigner. as per Philippine law, Ange is a Filipino.
i think Parks, Domingo, and a couple more played in MPBL at 1 point or another. arent they the league with, if you are filfor, you cant be more than 6'5 or something like that?

Curious if Coach Tim will start AJ and Junmar together. Malonzo is key as well, as you mentioned. Especially defensively, since Brownlee will be asked to extend himself offensively without Kai.

Asia Cup is also in August (6 months away from the last window).

If CTC is really open-minded about expanding the pool (https://www.philstar.com/sports/2024/12/31/2410864/cone-open-minded-gilas-pool), then the most logical time to do that is before the Asia Cup which requires a longer prep.

Chemistry is pretty much already there with possible additions like QMB, Heading, Baltazar, etc.

If we are expanding the pool, the earlier we do it, the better. My preference would be to have the new guys at least join the training camp for the Feb window to get them familiarized with the system, even if they will not play yet in the actual games.

A small ball experiment with JB at 4 alongside Carl or JB at 5 could be worth a shot too. Of course, with Dwight, Oftana, or Malonzo at 3. Best time for that would be next month's window, though.

I get that a lot of us hate it (especially given what the Reyes father and son did with it), but given our bigman situation, we need to look for options. Besides, we play small ball every time we put JB at 4. If it works, it could be a good option when neither Kai nor AJ nor Japeth is on the floor.

I have this idea with JB in mind, though. It might be a different dynamic if Bennie's the new NP.

couple of points from the NLEX Meralco game, I like that Poli is getting more minutes and plays directed to him, hes still rushing things but a player of his skillset will come in handy if developed
Bates and Quinto are Meralco's talismans, if they both play well Meralco is very hard to beat.
That MPBL pampanga team has some interesting pba level players, first was louie sanggalang and now theres ramires.

We could use a big like Bates for Gilas. If he's not eligible, maybe get an exemption.

My ideal small ball 5 is someone who can be an offensive hub/point center. Maybe KQ at the 5, with 2 of Malonzo/Tamayo/Brownlee/Boatwright at the forward spots.

In a small ball situation (or any situation where Kai, AJ, or Japeth is not the center), I think it's an absolute must to have a good defender at 3. That's why I had Dwight, Oftana, or Malonzo (if he can defend at the FIBA level) there. So that leaves the 4 and 5 spots for two of Carl, Quiambao, JB/Bennie, and maybe Malonzo if Dwight or Oftana man the 3.

An issue would be rebounding. A small ball lineup would need to force turnovers. Scottie, CJ, Newsome, and Dwight might help with that. JB and Bennie are good defensive rebounders.

KQ at the 5 in FIBA is asking for a loss. See what happened to Ateneo this year.

After Kai and AJ (and Ange, but he's an NP), which lineups would give us the best chance to win given extended minutes and in key moments against the other Asian powers (Aussie, Japan, NZ, Iran, Lebanon, China, Jordan, SoKor)? This is given our current roster and we make no additions.

1. A lineup with June Mar on the floor
2. A lineup with Japeth at center
3. A lineup with JB on the floor, but with neither Japeth nor June Mar at center (basically a small ball lineup)
4. A lineup with Bennie (once naturalized) on the floor, but with neither Japeth nor June Mar at center (small ball lineup)

Junemar is going to be important. He just has to blend with Edu. Junemar takes care of the offense while Edu takes care of the defense. We need either Junemar and Edu inside or at least one of them for the coming windows if cone goes for small ball.

When June Mar's on the floor, we need our best defensive 1-4 lineup on hand, and/or do something to minimize his involvement on defense. The others have to be more involved than June Mar on the defensive end.
