Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

I see Oftana as having more potential at the 3 spot for Gilas than the unpredictable Kobe Paras. Oftana just needs enough reps playing as a legit small forward & he also needs more FIBA game experience.

Problem is when will PBA allow their players to represent Gilas? The last time PBA borrowed players for Gilas was last 1st window of Asia cup qualifiers (February 2020), Since then, PBA doesn't borrow players to Gilas.. Even MVP players can't represent even if they want too.. Pogoy says that he will always represent Gilas if available, I know TNT will borrow players, But PBA doesn't want..

The right word there bro is lend/lent.

I think the PBA will lend some of its players to Gilas for the window qualifiers by taking a 2 to 3-week break in every qualifying window. Ganoon ang ginawa ng PBA during the 2019 World Cup qualifiers. I think that's doable naman.

As I've said before, if it all goes back to pre-pandemic levels, PBA shouldn't really have a problem with lending its most NT-fit players during the qualifying tournament windows. They can compress their schedule 10-15 days before and after each window. Nagawa nga nila na 5-6 days a week for 2 months ang gamedays nung nasa bubble eh, so there shouldn't really be a problem replicating the same setup if everything will be back to normal. That is, if they'd be willing to lend their players of course.

We are currently witnessing a potentially all-time great iteration of Gilas NT, not just because of its offensive prowess, but because of defensive versatility by a good number of players in its current roster. From all the Asian teams, i think they should regularly do battles with SoKor, to keep this defensive versatility in its tip-top shape.

I actually think our offense is just potential at this point. Defense is the real calling card of this Gilas team, and we're better on this end. Nevertheless, I agree that this could potentially be an all-time great iteration due to its good two-way potential. I hope this team reaches its potential.

Another thing is, more potential additions could be on the way which could increase our ceiling. I'm excited. I only hope the players are always available for FIBA tournaments, especially the tournament proper.

For me I'd rather not PBA lend their players, we already have a good core of young players that has good chemistry, continuation na lang. If we need to add then add guys in the B-league (Kobe p, Keifer, 3rdy) maybe Dalph if available.

I'm hoping that in this pandemic age PBA will decide to reduce the season to only 2 conferences & also reduces the season to just 8 months instead of the usual 10-month season during the pre-pandemic time. I hope our great PBA people realize that it would be very very challenging for the league to stage a 3-conference 10-month season in this pandemic age.

With this, there will be a higher chance that most PBA players will be available to play for Gilas in some windows of both the 2023 FIBA World Cup qualifiers & the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers.

Well, I can only hope.

Yeah, you're right on the calling card part. The current Gilas doesn't really have a consistent go-to guy who would carry majority of the scoring load (like Durant on Team USA).

I hope Tab would still be with the Gilas program until those additions to the pool - those high-ceiling homegrown/mixed-Pinoy kids that get mentioned continuously here in IBN - make their way to the Gilas pool. It is through him that this current Gilas resurgence has become possible.

I agree. Stick with the young players for the FIBA windows. For the main FIBA tournaments, however, we'll need some PBA players. But, what PBA players apart from CJ Perez, Robert Bolick, and probably RR Pogoy, could be effective in the FIBA setting, in fact, more effective than the players we already have?

I'll add Poy Erram into the mix. Sayang if we can't use Erram's versatility alongside Baltazar and Tamayo.

For me, only Pogoy, Perez, Bolick, Oftana and Erram are the PBA players worthy for call-ups in Gilas.

Calvin Oftana.. he's perfect partner for Navarro at 3 spot.. maybe he can play 2 spot also...

In a small-ball line-up (world level), I think Navarro would be more suited for the 4 spot if played along side Oftana (who'll be playing the 3). I haven't seen Calvin effectively play the 2-spot.

Oftana is really a forward, same with Will Navarro. Dwight is the real swingman for Gilas right now since he is a naturally 3 that can play the 2 but will have a hard time playing the 1.

Erram's intriguing, actually. He improved to be a good PBA defensive player, has some skill inside, and he's a bit mobile, and then could play as a 4 (an ability I discovererd thanks to Chot slotting him at the 4 alongside Kelly). Too bad he bloomed in his late 20s, as he was given the opportunity quite late.

With Baltazar and Tamayo, this is gonna be nice for switching.

True, good question - what CJ Perez and Robert Bolick can do, Keifer (and hopefully the available Dalph) can do as well. RR Pogoy is overrated for me in terms of FIBA basketball, I think he was shooting less than 30% downtown (plus inconsistent shooting wide-open 3s) Dwight Ramos and Jordan Heading are an upgrade over Pogoy IMO.. Maybe Poy Erram so we can have a lengthy defender..

Pogoy shot the 3 for 17% on the FIBA Asia world cup qualifiers and 25% 3FG on the World Cup itself. He's as inconsistent as Gary David for FIBA

Yeah, who just happens to have a solid ball-handling (for a 6'5" Pinoy homegrown) and perimeter game.

As for Dwight, I genuinely believed in the past that he could play significant minutes as a playmaking guard. But with his current stint in the B. League, it really showed that he's more suited for 2/3 on both ends.

I'll have to agree on this assessment on Pogoy, hence why I said 'probably' when it came to him. He absolutely sucked in FIBA for the most part. But to be fair, he did perform well against Indonesia.

Still, most likely he's not indispensable.

Kouame 4/5
Lepalam 4/5
Erram 4/5
Baltazar 3/4
Tamayo 3/4

This is a good tall and versatile froncourt.

Navarro 3/4
Oftana 3/4
Paras 3/4
Javi 3/4
Parks 2/3
Ramos 2/3
Credo 2/3
Dave 2/3
Thirdy 2/3

Our options at the forward and swingman positions.

Skip to 2:05. I saw an interview with Dwight and he said that he would probably return to the Philippines in February. It made me hopeful that our B-league guys could join us.

Well, the B-league is likely to take another 3-week break in February to give way to Japan National team's stint in the 2nd window. That would also give chance to Dwight Lamos, Thirdy & maybe Kiefer & Kobe for a Gilas stint in the 2nd window. The only problem I see would be the mandatory quarantine period that our B-league players would be required.
