Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

I'm one of that crowd, sir, thinking our D would be enough to offset the average shooting. Hahahahaha.

But that said, I also think Heading will be a great addition due to his shooting, and he ain't a liability on defense.

I mean having both will be good.

In theory, all of our players can shoot. Even Kai (even if he struggled this game) and Junmar has an outside shot.

But it is not their main strength.

The only one who you can say is a 3pt specialist is Oftana. But he struggled so far.

Why is no one questioning the inclusion of Amos in this lineup? Is the quality of our local amateur players too low for a player of that caliber to be chosen?

Should have picked Lebron Lopez instead, kid has better potential and it seems he will fit the system.

He earned that spot with that U18 stint showing. That's the point of the youth team anyway, getting promoted to the seniors when you were impressive in the youth.

Tim envisions amos as his Roel Gomez. I honestly think that Amos isnt worthy of the slot. He is too small as pf and too slow as pf. I would prefer Konov as our designated shooter.

If and when Newsome retires, someone has to take over the mantle as primary perimeter stopper. Whether it's someone currently in the roster or it's a new guy, someone has to do the role. Newsome's role is a big part of why the team is winning. He's not there for scoring or playmaking, he's there to patrol the perimeter and hound top-scoring guards.

If no one can assume the role, then it would have to be a different type of defender who can make the team defend better as a whole like a Will Navarro or maybe Tuffin. Schonny is one guy who can probably approximate the role if he is willing to go all out on D (their offense is similarly midrange heavy).

A guy like Heading can be included, but not as replacement for Newsome but for someone like CJ.

There is no way that the present nt can survive aus. The designated shooters were busts, and against what, 123rd something ranked hongkong?

Oftana and amos have to be removed. They are asean level for sure, but not much against asia's best. Malonzo cant shoot, but at least he can stop volume shooters like sourpuss corey webster. At this point, i agree that heading and lopez would be far more effective AND reliable as volume scorers with decent defense. Tamayo can do some feisty sf offense and defense, but he is no brownlee or clarkson. Ramos is also more of a defense-oriented non-scoring guard. Abando is a better replacement for cj; it just happens that cj reliably plays well with newsome and thompson around. Baltazar should be good enough against anything other than aus. Baltazar and tamayo are our best sfs, and our nt can survive without the aging brownlee with both of them.

Against aus, or nz at its home court, a jalen green or clarkson is a must at sg/sf. Why is kouame still not exempted as a local? He meets all np exemption requirements of fiba. With kai, abai, kouame, qmb and edu occasionally onboard, aus bigs can be neutralized with relative ease.

now that we've already assured a seat in FIBA Asia Cup 2025

it is wiser now to expand the pool a little bit and let those core unit composed of Kai, AJ, JMF, Jamie, JB, Scoty and Dwight should skip that 3rd and final window

they are glassy and we can't afford to hear nor read news that those dudes are ain't available on Aug. 5 to 17, 2025 because they are aching here and there

seriously, our FIBA level pool of talents are still shallow and thin compared to defending champ AUS whom I think can win it all even parading their usual Team C

same thing with the Tall Blacks as per Sir Dave's pronouncement, despite missing some quality guys bec. of club commitments in Europe they are still a big headache

on all aspiring Asian teams including us.

with the recent pronouncement of newly appointed Program Director and Team Manager for Senior and Boys team Grandpa Chualay

wherein he mentioned that they are contemplating to add 2 or 3 warm bodies to the existing pool

it's no brainer that the likes of QMB, Heading, Schonny and Balti can improve our shallow pool

with Japeth, AK34, Carl, KQ, CJ, Calvin plus those 4 I mentioned it's all fair game against those(rematch) NZL and CTE teams.

I forgot to add Mason

so there you go

having an 11 guys for that last window is fair enough.

I don't think it will post a major challenge to those 4 I mentioned about CTC's system

it is still within Coach Tim's philosophy of "just a small pool for easy learning".

let QMB attend the Brgy. practice after his stint in UAAP to learn the system and

also to make himself(always) in game shape same with Ange Koume.

Sir cc,

Oftana is part of the powerful MVP group.

Amos is part of one of the most influential educational institution here in PHI.

CJ is part of the SMB group.

as much as some of us here in IBN are not totally cool with those you've mentioned

we cannot avoid the fact that "politics in Sports Federation is everywhere" I'm talking about other nations as well.

personally, I ain't totally questioning "why they are there".

those 3 are still a work in progress as far as CTC's system are concern esp. on Mason who is the youngest of them all

MVP Group, SMB Group and DLSU is a big part of Philippine basketball and they are the so-called "main stakeholders" for Senior and youth teams

alongside the whole UAAP and NCAA kingdom

we cannot afford to have issues or worst, burn bridges with them...it's a suicide on Pilipinas Basketball.

as we follow the journey of the latest entourage, I would say, they haven't reach the expectation of our suppose dream team esp. against those higher seeded

but as we go deeper, it seems that coach tim cone are honing some specific roles on those players, it ain't perfect but I think it will benefit the team moving forward.

no wonder CTC choose to have a small pool for easy teaching and learning

Renz Abando will always be part of the Gilas journey moving forward, it's just that those 3 you mentioned are in better position for now

as for AK34, two more impactful things he needs to fastrack his exemption in response to the so-called "strong domestic connection" ....allow him to join next year's PBA draft and practice his "rights of suffrage"

as part of his naturalization paper signed both by House Reps and Senate that he has all the "political rights" as a Filipino.

if the powerful Sec Gen and its tech. committee sees those things in the immediate future then there is no reason why they will questioned and disapprove it.

him and hopefully Favour Onoh had all the trump cards to be exempted moving forward.

He has tunnel vision just like Kobe. Need to have better coaching or follow structured team concept

Francis needs to either , have a breakout season next year or impress in the PBA, yes i dont think hes KBL import material

Lopez furst step is bettee than cj and much more explosive.. but attitude must straighten up.. he makes kobe paras a misunderstood introvert comapre to him

Lopez first step is better than cj'sand much more explosive when finishing teb rim. but attitude must straighten up.. he makes kobe paras a misunderstood introvert comapre to him

He has a foreigner mother right? Not eligible for KBL.

That too i think, but really unless youre a tall center it would be very hard to find a team that would hire a glorified roleplayer as an import

With the way Gilas is playing since OQT , they are 2nd tier world cup team already, equivalent to 2nd tier Americas team

Gilas needs to sustain the momentum it is gaining right now.

The issue, I think, that Gilas needs to face is to ready the replacement of some of the older players.

Brownlee is getting old
Newsome is getting old
Japeth should have been retired
June Mar is getting old

Caelum Harris should be trained for Newsome's role
Amos/Edu is already there for Japeth
QMB?(giant fkin question mark here) for June Mar, if Edu doesn't get batter I'd rather they tap another pinoy kid like Gagate, Demisana for this position rather than import one
after Brownlee they should get a naturalized of the exact same position and offerings(a non dominant but extremely reliable wing)

I really don't wanna see an asa kay Blatche system ever again

Along with June Mar, JB, and Japeth, AJ's injury-prone, which will leave Kai as the lone interior defender we'll have when AJ's hurt and the other bigs have retired. We really need to focus on that front as soon as possible. Either get an NP, hope Ange and Mike become eligible, hope QMB really is eligible, or at worst, get someone like Kemark Carino or hope we have a young viable rim protector prospect.

And then JB is our best shot creator by a margin. We will also need to determine how we'll replace the shot creation he provides.
